Botanical Empires: The Politics Of Plants In Theocritus' Idylls, Christian Rhoads Apr 2023

Botanical Empires: The Politics Of Plants In Theocritus' Idylls, Christian Rhoads

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This project identifies a system of plant-based identity politics in Theocritus’ Idylls. In Chapter One, I trace a paradigm of unequal reciprocal interactions, “plant-hubris,” throughout the erotic relationships of the Idylls as one partner acts violently against another who “overwaters” them with affection. I argue that characters in the Idylls use plants to explain their own relationship dynamics. In the second chapter I examine Idyll 1 and identify social commentary on culturally specific poetic competition that relies on vegetal imagery. The competition between the goatherd and Thyrsis in Idyll 1 is informed by both the immediate vegetal …

Traveling With A Purpose: Sustainable Tourism, Nina Rossman Apr 2023

Traveling With A Purpose: Sustainable Tourism, Nina Rossman

Honors Theses

The act of traveling is often seen as exciting for many travelers looking for adventure or to experience something different than their everyday routines. However, many current tourism trends force negative burdens onto local communities and environments. For instance, when development increases consumption in an area where natural resources are scarce to begin with, it can put pressure on those resources. There is a certain level of visitor use that an environment can manage; negative impacts occur when the changes in visitor use exceed this limit.[1]

While tourist destinations experience negative impacts from the tourism industry, tourism also supports …

Environment and Society Student Research

This paper outlines a proposal, based on Blackfoot worldview, for a collective method to stand alongside Western qualitative and quantitative methods and highlights the value of collective methods in collaborative social-ecological research. Neither qualitative nor quantitative methods are adequate to disclose a world where all things are alive, where “objects” are subjects—agentive beings in their own right. Most Indigenous cultures understand and experience the world as a network of living beings, a collective, with whom they are interrelated/connected and therefore, any efforts to collaborate with Indigenous peoples must acknowledge comprehensive relational animacy. Applying coproduction principles in concert with Blackfoot ways …

Silverstein, Helen "Lyn", Reyna Lee Stovall Apr 2023

Silverstein, Helen "Lyn", Reyna Lee Stovall

Bronx Jewish History Project

Helen "Lyn" Silverstein was born in 1944 and grew up in the Melrose area. Her family was not observant growing up but she remembers certain dietary rules her family followed that were kosher-style. Her family was not close-knit and as a result, she knew very little about her extend family. Her mother and aunt would speak Yiddish together when they didn’t want Silverstein to know what they were saying. As a result, Silverstein knows certain words and phrases in Yiddish but cannot speak or understand it fluently.

Silverstein went to PS 35 for elementary school, Jordan L. Mott, Junior High …

Adler, Lucille, Sophia Maier Garcia

Bronx Jewish History Project

Her mother born in Poland and her father raised in Manhattan, Lucille Adler grew up in a two family house on Morris Avenue and 174 Street. She describes the neighborhood as 99% Jewish, with a few Black students in her public school. They would go shopping on 174 Street and she loved walking up and down to see all the shops. Her mother taught math at a Jewish school and her father had an insurance company. She envied the other girls whose mothers stayed at home, because she was a latchkey girl and would come home to an empty house …

One In The Same + The Fated Goal Of Gatsby, Luke Anderson Apr 2023

One In The Same + The Fated Goal Of Gatsby, Luke Anderson

2023 Student Academic Showcase

This presentation focuses on a creative and critical response to the plot of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. I reimagined the novel’s ending in a short story I wrote titled “One in the Same.” I also reflected on my creative decisions in a critical essay titled “The Fated Goal of Gatsby.” My presentation argues that the alternative ending to The Great Gatsby in my short story is a worthwhile alternative because of how the novel itself structures Gatsby’s desire for Daisy.

Faulkner & The Demon In A Bottle, Ernesto Gomez Apr 2023

Faulkner & The Demon In A Bottle, Ernesto Gomez

2023 Student Academic Showcase

My story is one about the dangers of mankind in its relentless pursuit of knowledge and asks questions regarding how much is one willing to sacrifice all for the sake of being superior to those around him, and rising above what society expected one to stay as or become. This short story of my own creation was made through my own effort and tempered by the criticism of those around me, truly befitting of a story that examines the nature of knowledge and what we are willing to do in order to grasp it.

Splinters, El Jayne Apr 2023

Splinters, El Jayne

2023 Student Academic Showcase

Splinters is a piece of creative fiction that explores how love is communicated through art. A young man shares the art of wood carving with his grandfather who taught him, and, as his grandfather’s health begins to fail, he uses it to return that love to him. Through the eyes of this narrator, we are taken on a journey of love and loss between generations, and come to understand that the simplest of things often hold the greatest weight. Though fiction, this work is heavily inspired by my own relationship with my grandmother and the art we share with one …
