The Friends Of C.S. Lewis, Walter Hooper
The Friends Of C.S. Lewis, Walter Hooper
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
A series of talks was given at Grandpont House, Oxford in 2013 to mark the half-century anniversary of C. S. Lewis’s death and the fortieth anniversary of J. R. R. Tolkien’s passing. The address by Walter Hooper focused on memories of C. S. Lewis and his friends and took that story up to Lewis’s death on 22 November 1963.1 The essay below, given on a different occasion,2 is a complementary address covering the period from 1963 to the death of Owen Barfield in 1997. Hooper himself passed away in 2020.
A Message In A Bottle: C.S. Lewis's American Epistolary Friendships, Bruce L. Edwards
A Message In A Bottle: C.S. Lewis's American Epistolary Friendships, Bruce L. Edwards
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
The first French conference focused on C. S. Lewis was held at Lille Catholic University in June 2011. Bruce L. Edwards delivered a plenary talk there exploring the theme of friendship as demonstrated in the correspondence between Lewis and his American readers. Edwards had intended to revise this address for inclusion in the memorial volume dedicated to his friend Chris Mitchell. Edwards died in 2015 while still making revisions to the draft below.
Cousin To Cousin: Joy Davidman's Correspondence With Edward Rosenthal, Don W. King
Cousin To Cousin: Joy Davidman's Correspondence With Edward Rosenthal, Don W. King
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
The focus of the smaller collection below—comprised of six letters and postcards written between 1950 and 1960—is Joy’s correspondence with her first cousin, Edward (aka Eddie or Eddy) Rosenthal. Rosenthal was the son of Henry and Rebecca Rosenthal; Rebecca was the sister of Joy’s mother, Jennette Davidman, and thus Joy’s aunt. Rosenthal worked at the Los Angeles Examiner (est. 1903-62), a newspaper founded by William Randolph Hearst. The subjects of their correspondence include discussion of family members, notably Joy’s husband Bill Gresham as well as her sons David and Douglas, and a number of other extended kindred. Other topics are …
An Unlikely Preacher: C.S. Lewis And The War-Time Sermon, Joe Ricke
An Unlikely Preacher: C.S. Lewis And The War-Time Sermon, Joe Ricke
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
The sermon was supposedly titled “‘None Other Gods’: Culture in War Time,” although no extant copy has that full title. His text was an obscure verse from the Book of Deuteronomy. It was the first sermon he had ever preached. Before the end of the war, the preacher, Clive Staples Lewis, a native of Belfast, a veteran of the Great War, and a rather recently converted agnostic, had become a household word in Great Britain and beyond as a defender of the Christian faith.
Seven Letters Of Warren Lewis To June Flewett, Don W. King
Seven Letters Of Warren Lewis To June Flewett, Don W. King
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
Excerpt: June loved both Jack and Warnie, and she remembered Warnie with particular affection: “He was amusing and enjoyed playing the crusty old bachelor. He and Jack listened to classical music on an old gramophone with a huge wooden horn. I was sometimes invited to join them for this in Jack’s study. I do not remember ever seeing him in a bad mood. . . . In the two years that I shared his home he was consistently kind and courteous to me and I was very fond of him.” The seven letters that follow underscore Warnie’s deep affection for …

C.S. Lewis Manuscripts At The Lanier Theological Library, Charlie W. Starr, Crystal Hurd
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
In addition to a substantial collection of Lewis first editions, the Lanier Collection contains several handwritten Lewis manuscripts. Previously published Lewis pieces in the Lanier collection include eleven letters or excerpts from letters, a manuscript draft of “Learning in Wartime” from the collection The Weight of Glory, an early version of the poem “A Cliché Came Out of its Cage,” and a penciled outline of notes for Beyond Personality, later included in Mere Christianity. Fourteen Lewis manuscripts in the Lanier Collection are published here for the first time.

The Artist's Arsenal: Hiv+ Women Artists, The ‘War On Aids’, And Reclaiming Illness Narratives, Mekha Varghese
Art and Art History Honors Papers
This work uses the methodologies of both art history and medical sociology through the ‘syndemic’ framework to engage in close readings of two selected artworks, Exit (1997) by Nancer LeMoins and Violation of Africa (1984) by Affrekka Jefferson. An interdisciplinary approach to these works enables consideration of how multiple marginalized identities—i.e., living with a stigmatized illness, being a woman, being LGBTQIA+, being a person of color—appear in visual art and shape illness experience; these ideas are investigated through a formal and iconographic reading of the selected artworks. Placing art as the foundation of this analysis reveals its astounding impact and …

Chaucer’s use of visual imagery and symbolism in The Canterbury Tales. From a literary approach, scholars point to Chaucer’s diverse and extensive descriptions of visuals in poetry as a primary rhetorical avenue, where he applies commentary to instances where a physical image (known in this case as a symbol) is most appropriate to elicit a desired emotion or convey a certain idea concerning moralit

Woman, Queer, Jewish: The Sociopolitical Importance And Impact Of Identity Labels, Megan Polun
Woman, Queer, Jewish: The Sociopolitical Importance And Impact Of Identity Labels, Megan Polun
Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies
In this thesis, I trace and analyze the historical, social, and political uses of three identity labels: woman, queer, and Jewish. These three identity categories are personally important to me because I identify as a queer, Jewish woman. The questions motivating this analysis are as follows: How have these words been defined and who gets to define them? What has it meant historically to move through the world with one of these labels, and what does it look like today? What qualifies someone to identify with one of these labels, and what experiences or qualities do we share? What challenges …
Female Politicians And The Way That Gender Stereotypes And The Male-Dominated Power Structure Influence The Way They Run Their Campaigns, Morgan Marckres
Female Politicians And The Way That Gender Stereotypes And The Male-Dominated Power Structure Influence The Way They Run Their Campaigns, Morgan Marckres
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
Women only make up 28.5% of Congress even though they make up 50.5% of the population of the United States. This disparity indicates that there are significant barriers that female politicians face when they are running for office. To look for why, an extensive literature review was conducted that gave context about the gender stereotypes that female candidates face and how they navigate the male template of power. Using the material from the literature review, the campaigns of three women and three men who won their election in the recent 2022 midterms were analyzed. The candidate’s campaigns were then compared. …

The Buck Stops Somewhere: An Analysis Of Global Governmental Responses To Covid-19, David Roundy
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
This study reviews a global sample of noteworthy governmental responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. The coronavirus first discovered in 2019, officially known as SARS-CoV-2, sparked radical change in every country across the globe, but as we enter the post-pandemic era, it is clear that some nations fared better than others when it came to addressing the situation. Some countries were better prepared to handle a viral outbreak before COVID-19 even began to spread, while others were aided by swift and effective leadership to ensure national success in the face of an international dilemma. This study makes use of both qualitative …
Exploring The Connection: The Scale Of Time And Effort Within American Baked Goods, Grace Guindon
Exploring The Connection: The Scale Of Time And Effort Within American Baked Goods, Grace Guindon
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Through the use of memoir and historical occurrences this paper will discuss the spectrum and correlations that all baked goods lie on. There are two scales: the spectrum of labor versus leisure, and the spectrum of specialness versus overindulgence. They have a positive correlation relationship. Often when something is on the high end of the leisure scale, it is also high in the overindulgence scale. Then that means the opposite end is true- high in labor can significantly relate to being higher in specialness. These relations of labor and specialness and leisure and overindulgence can tell us something about who …

The Theatre Of Math: The Stage As A Tool For Abstract Math Education, Blaine Hudak
The Theatre Of Math: The Stage As A Tool For Abstract Math Education, Blaine Hudak
Honors Projects
So often in the education of Mathematics does instruction solely consist of the lecture. While this can be an effective method of communicating the ideas of math, it leaves much to be desired in gathering the interest and intrigue of those who have not dedicated their lives to the study of the subject. Theatre, by contrast, is a tool that has been used in the past as means of teaching complicated and difficult to understand moral and emotional subjects. While Theatre and Mathematics have been used in combination many times in the past, it is most often done in the …
The Case Of La Escuela Smart Academy: How Legislation And Incentives Can Aid The Transition From Bicultural To Bilingual Education, Fidelina Valverde-Rivera
The Case Of La Escuela Smart Academy: How Legislation And Incentives Can Aid The Transition From Bicultural To Bilingual Education, Fidelina Valverde-Rivera
Honors Projects
As the Latinx population in the United States continues to rise, La Escuela SMART Academy — a bicultural school in Toledo, Ohio — serves as just one example of how educational systems are seeking to cater to their respective needs. Previous research provides us with information explaining why bilingual education is valuable and worthy of promotion — including cognitive, cultural, linguistic, and economic benefits — as well as best practices. Using this information, I create a set of conditions that, when met, have the best potential of yielding an effective bilingual institution. In order to determine where La Escuela SMART …

The Things We Do On A Moonlit Night, Jessica Barrio
The Agora
I wrote this while thinking about some of the people closest to me in my life and the feelings that they have experienced while living in a small town like Las Cruces. I felt inspired by this struggle and conflict between the people who make you happy and the place that makes you miserable and I wanted to explore that conflict in my own writing. This story is meant to be a sort of look into dealing with trauma and guilt, and how that all intertwines with the memories of the narrator and their love. I wanted to write something …
The Doctrine Of Double Effect, Tanya Solis
The Doctrine Of Double Effect, Tanya Solis
The Agora
The Doctrine of Double Effect (DDE) is a natural law principle attributed to Thomas Aquinas that is supposed to offer insight on whether an act is morally permissible or not. It also seeks to make a moral distinction between intending harm and merely foreseeing harm. In this paper, I argue that we should reject DDE because it does not allow a person to intend harm even in situations where it seems to be morally justifiable. It also fails at making a distinction between intending harm and merely foreseeing harm. Because of this, the conditions of DDE seem to be implausible.

The Sin Of War, Devon L. Harrison
The Sin Of War, Devon L. Harrison
The Agora
The main question of the short story is who is Ares? It's well known he is the war god of ancient Greek mythos and individuals interested in Greek Mythology could tell you he is one of several war gods, who specifically embodies the brutality of war. I bother to explore this question as Ares doesn't make much of an appearance in mythology and when he does it's in a rather demeaning light. Ares is one of the only Olympians who is, typically, disliked existing as a necessary evil rather than a god. He is appreciated in certain circles with the …

Estimating The Xi Effect: How Chinese Aid Affects Economic And Political Institutions, Mackenzie Owens
Estimating The Xi Effect: How Chinese Aid Affects Economic And Political Institutions, Mackenzie Owens
Business and Economics Honors Papers
Under Xi Jinping, China has expanded its aid allocation worldwide and has introduced global infrastructure projects to connect itself to countries everywhere. With such ambitious aid allocation, China has been the recipient of both admiration and scorn on the international stage. This paper assesses these concerns using data from 2000 to 2017 to determine how Chinese aid affects recipient states’ economic and political institutions. Specifically, this research looked to ascertain if there is a measurable Xi Effect in recipient states. The quantitative analysis shows the Xi Effect is small and positive on economic institutions and political institutions, signifying Xi Jinping’s …
Adapting The Classics: Making The Invisible Visible, Kate Isabel Foley
Adapting The Classics: Making The Invisible Visible, Kate Isabel Foley
Theater Honors Papers
This project seeks to answer the question, “How can a writer use an old story to shine new light on modern issues and make the invisible visible?” My adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is a genderbent retelling with queer themes while my adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan is a dark reimagining of Mrs. Darling as an antihero protagonist who must become Captain Hook to try to save her children. Both my research and these two plays focus on bringing visibility to marginalized communities, specifically women and members of the queer community.

When traditional sports teams formed on college campuses, it took decades before they looked anything like college sports teams do today. College football is noted as beginning in 1869 (Parlier, 2022), NCAA formed in 1906, and the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision launched in 1978 (NCAA, 2023). In 2009, one of the first recorded college esports matches took place. In 2014, Robert Morris Universty started the first varsity-level college esports program. Now, there are an estimated 500 college esports programs amassing thousands of student participants. It took decades, if not a century, for college football to achieve these numbers. …

Femicides: Gender Violence In Mexico, Maria Mendoza
Femicides: Gender Violence In Mexico, Maria Mendoza
The Agora
Femicide is a recurring topic in Mexican society due to the concerning rise of cases in past years. This research paper aims to discuss femicides and gender violence in Mexico as a systematic problem. To develop this text, various femicide cases are presented, as well as recounts of the author’s personal experiences living in Mexico. Lastly, the final sections show the unreliability of the Mexican government to resolve the issue of femicides in the country, demonstrating the importance of public involvement in combating gender violence.
