An Acoustic Description And Synchronic Comparison Of Morphological Reduplication In Hiligaynon, Nathan W. Adamson
An Acoustic Description And Synchronic Comparison Of Morphological Reduplication In Hiligaynon, Nathan W. Adamson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an acoustic analysis, grammatical description, and typological comparison of morphological reduplication in Hiligaynon, an Austronesian language spoken in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. This work has two main goals: first, to redescribe the formal and functional properties of full reduplication in Hiligaynon; and second, to offer a typological analysis as to how the system of reduplication in Hiligaynon compares to the known typological universals of human language, and within the genetically related languages of the Philippines. While reduplication in Hiligaynon has previously been described (Wolfenden 1971; Cameron 1985; Zack 1994; Spitz 2001; Santos 2012), the …
The Morpheme -Ga In Pastaza Quichua, Charles W. Alger
The Morpheme -Ga In Pastaza Quichua, Charles W. Alger
Theses and Dissertations
Pastaza Quichua (PQ) is a member of the Quechua IIB branch of Quechuan languages and has a rich morphology. However, this richness is often over-simplified for the sake of simpler explanation. Most Quechuan languages have a morpheme that is usually spelt -ga, -ka or -qa, and is described as a topicalizing clitic. In this thesis, I will examine the morpheme -ga in PQ, which, like its cognates, is often said to be a topicalizing clitic, despite the fact that it frequently breaks traditional rules for both topic marking and clitic-hood. I find that -ga is a topic marker according to …
A Survey Analysis Of United States Community College Esl Programs, Haley Mckee Hanson
A Survey Analysis Of United States Community College Esl Programs, Haley Mckee Hanson
Theses and Dissertations
English learners (ELs) across the United States have aspirations to continue their education and pursue careers in the English language. Because community colleges are educational institutions that not only generally provide open enrollment but are also more accessible and affordable than universities, they are a feasible option for many ELs. Community colleges often have an English as a Second Language (ESL) program available to ELs to help them reach the proficiency needed to study in the English language. This study explores how these programs are structured, who is administering and teaching in these programs, and if these programs track their …

Equine Piroplasmosis: Uncommon Transmissible Disease With International Impact, Alexia Blais, Alexia Stedman, Flora Marderosian
Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium
In the Equine Diseases course, students were tasked to create a slideshow and video project on a disease or condition that is rare or foreign to the United States. Equine Piroplasmosis is a blood disease that is majorly unidentified to the average horse owner. It is a condition where protozoa (single-celled organisms) enter the bloodstream through a tick bite and attach themselves to the horse’s red blood cells. The protozoa develop and reproduce the best in warm, tropical climates. It is not something we see much in the United States, but this equine disease has a human counterpart that is …

The Impact Of Instagram Usage On Body-Esteem In Young Women In College, Kirsten Etzinger
Honors Projects
Instagram as a platform is increasing in popularity, especially among young women. Young women may use Instagram to keep up with their peers, follow trends, or as a way to express themselves. However, it is evident that young women can be negatively affected by the content they are exposed to on Instagram. This study examines the impact that increased Instagram usage can have on body-esteem in young women in college by evaluating their degree of Instagram usage, motivation to use social media for body comparison, and feelings of body-esteem. An online survey was conducted with BGSU college-age female students and …

Exploring Unaccompanied Clarinet Repertoire, Kamil Lebowa
Honors Capstones
The goal of this project was to explore solo clarinet works over the course of the semester and to perform them in an unaccompanied recital. The project culminated in a full-length recital on April 21st, 2023, in the Recital Hall of the NIU Music Building. Each of the works that were performed explored a different aspect of unaccompanied clarinet music. The works that I chose required me to learn how to play the clarinet in a variety of different ways. Some of the pieces required a high level of technical efficacy while others required extended techniques, playing on different parts …

From Mascot To Marine: The Long Walk To The American Military Dog Program, Elisabeth Jana Phillips
Masters Theses
In World War II, the military dog became synonymous with patriotism and the fight for a free world. In the absence of a military dog program at the beginning of World War II, the United States was the exception amongst Western powers. The establishment of an official military dog program in the United States during World War II was a critical and inevitable step in the development of the country’s military. Through the creative collaboration of civilians and military personnel, the K9 Corps and Dogs for Defense organization produced trained military dogs that had immediate positive impacts on the battlefield …

Major: Health Policy and Management
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Darra Mulderry, Center for Engaged Learning
After the Great War, Americans embraced change, especially women who had taken on a greater role at home during the war. As women gained more independence through the right to vote and roles outside of the house, their style choices reflected their lifestyle changes. Women would no longer be burdened by male-dominated government and societal restrictions. Their fashion cast of the added weight, demonstrated by lighter and shorter clothing styles, hairstyles, and a more liberal use of makeup.
Through the 20’s, women continued …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study addresses the concept of religious doubt concerning those who embrace the Christian tradition, i.e., those who embrace the words and works of Christ, specifically the reality of the Resurrection, as true and efficacious for both salvation and spiritual formation. The existential crisis of doubting these truths is a consistent and significant issue addressed in both religious and secular circles driven by the desire to help the individual overcome the emotional distress associated with this phenomenon. This study is designating doubt that creates an existential crisis as emotional religious doubt (ERD), i.e., it is a species/variety of doubt that …

The reality of the decline of the church is evident in many churches today. What is causing the decline in worship attendance? This research study examined 14 of the 42 Baptist churches in Eastman, Georgia, from the Dodge County Baptist Association, where the average weekly reporting worship attendance during 2018 to 2021 was 50 to 150 in attendance. This research used the survey method, where participants anonymously answered questions regarding their church and pastor. The research study's results objectively prove that pastoral leadership can affect church attendance. Further research can be completed to investigate this connection between pastoral leadership and …
A Grief Intervention For Early Perinatal Loss, Dani M. Helm
A Grief Intervention For Early Perinatal Loss, Dani M. Helm
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Early pregnancy loss has a multidimensional effect on patients, touching the body, soul, and spirit. This project addresses patients’ lack of spiritual and emotional support following early pregnancy loss, commonly called a miscarriage. The available research on the emotional impact of early pregnancy loss has grown stronger over the last three decades. However, there is a deficit of research exploring the spiritual implications of miscarriage and how faith is used as a coping mechanism for pregnancy grief. In modern culture, the term spirituality can mean many different things. With this awareness, Mercy Healthcare embraces and supports patients wherever they find …

Musical Excellence And Faith: A Study Of Service-Learning As Pedagogy For Instrumental Ensembles At Northwest University, Naomi Lynn Fanshier
Musical Excellence And Faith: A Study Of Service-Learning As Pedagogy For Instrumental Ensembles At Northwest University, Naomi Lynn Fanshier
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite several studies indicating its importance, there is a lack of information regarding service-learning as a pedagogical tool for instrumental ensembles. Existing studies suggest service-learning creates culturally sensitive music teachers who are apt to create inclusive classrooms with a mind to diversity. Incorporating service-learning techniques into instrumental ensemble courses could be a helpful tool in combining faith and musical excellence. This hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative study explores student experience and director observations concerning service-learning use to increase musical excellence and faith integration into performance-based instrumental ensemble courses at one Christian university. It is essential to consider both student and instructor experiences. …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore social media usage according to leaders from churches in the Southern Baptist Convention in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. For this study, social media was defined as any social media networking platform used to share the Gospel. The research was guided by the mathematical theory of communication (Shannon, 2001; Weaver,1953) developed by Shannon, Weaver, Schramm, and Berlo. The communication model effectively understands and explores the literature gap regarding God and how He communicates with His people. The study started with purposeful sampling and recruitment of participants, who then voluntarily completed the …

Heilbronn Im Jahr 1945: Warum Hier, Alexander Keuerleber
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The Mental And Physical Experiences Of Inmates In Solitary Confinement, Kristina Veszeleiova, Barbara Frazier
Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium
Solitary confinement has been used in our society since 1773. It was first introduced as a punishment for inmates exhibiting dangerous behavior and served as protection for vulnerable populations. In solitary confinement, an inmate is isolated in a single cell with little external or environmental stimulation. In recent years emphasis has been placed on the psychological and physiological effects of solitary confinement experienced by inmates in correctional facilities in the United States. These effects can result in a number of negative consequences on offender’s life in prison and out of prison. This research study aims to investigate the effects of …

Pcr Genotyping Of Physcomitrella Patens Crispr/Cas9 Ppcsld5/8 Ko Mutants, Kerrina Whelan, Kayleigh Kearney, Christos Dimos
Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium
The moss Physcomitrella patens is an attractive model organism due to its small genome and dominant haploid phase. P. patens has eight genes that form a family known as the Cellulose Synthase-Like Ds (CSLDs). A previous study using global knockdown of the entire PpCSLD family by RNA interference (RNAi) showed a decrease in protonemal tip growth, indicating that PpCSLDs play a role in protonemal growth. In order to study the roles of specific CSLDs in P. patens development, potential double KO mutants for PpCSLD5/8 were generated by CRISPR/Cas9 mutagenesis. The goal of this project was to screen potential ppcsld5/8 KO …

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium
J. K. Rowling, the bestselling author of the popular young adult book series Harry Potter, has recently been recognized for her transphobic comments on Twitter. As of this writing, the author has not come forward to apologize for two separate instances of polemical tweets that targeted the transgender community. An exhaustive literature review reveals numerous studies of socially-mediated transphobia and its effects on fans, but not in the case of Rowling. Based on a discourse analysis of fans and anti-fans' 9,000+ tweets from August of 2020 to January of 2023, as scraped and culled from Rowling's Twitter page, this study …

Community Violence In Childhood, Brenna Stephens, Timothy Sulaiman, Anna Newfell, Hannah Habtemicheal
Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium
Experiencing violence in childhood is an all too common occurrence, especially in sexual and gender minority communities. It can be hard to dictate predictors of these such occurrences, which is the focus of our study. A survey regarding many different experiences members of these communities can have was taken by 1316 people via Reddit. Out of these participants, 309 reported experiencing some form of violence in their childhood. Among the demographic information taken for the survey, none had a significant correlation besides education. Although this factor did have statistical significance, there is no logical explanation as education can be continued …
