Italian Studies In Southern Africa, Vol. 35 No. 1 (2022): Diversity, Decolonisation, And Italian Studies, Simone Brioni Dr., Marie Orton, Graziella Parati, Gaoheng Zhang Jan 2022

Italian Studies In Southern Africa, Vol. 35 No. 1 (2022): Diversity, Decolonisation, And Italian Studies, Simone Brioni Dr., Marie Orton, Graziella Parati, Gaoheng Zhang

Department of English Faculty Publications

This special issue explores the intersections of diversity and decolonisation within the field of Italian Studies. By engaging with postcolonial theory, migration, and critical race studies, the contributors reframe traditional narratives of Italian culture and history. The issue investigates the legacies of colonialism, the experiences of racialized communities in Italy, and the role of Italian Studies in fostering inclusive and equitable academic practices. Through interdisciplinary approaches, the essays call for a critical re-evaluation of the field, advocating for a more diverse, decolonial, and globally conscious understanding of Italy's past and present.

Tropical Materialisms: Toward Decolonial Poetics, Practices And Possibilities, Christian Jil R. Benitez, Anita Lundberg Jan 2022

Tropical Materialisms: Toward Decolonial Poetics, Practices And Possibilities, Christian Jil R. Benitez, Anita Lundberg

Filipino Faculty Publications

Tropical Materialisms concur on at least three things: humans are always entangled with non-human/material agents; such entanglement is necessary for any creative act to take place; and these same entanglements allow us to interrogate and re-evaluate preconceived notions about the world. This Special Issue aligns itself with the fields of new materialism and posthumanism. What is particularly exciting is the opportunity to rearticulate these fields in tropical terms, that is, with scholarly and creative practices from and about the tropical world. This focus is crucial given that current scholarship in new materialism and posthumanism predominantly comes from European temperate contexts …

Review Of Art, Craft, And Theology In Fourth-Century Christian Authors, Dana Robinson Jan 2022

Review Of Art, Craft, And Theology In Fourth-Century Christian Authors, Dana Robinson

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

The current revival of interest in craft traditions, by makers and scholars alike, brings our attention to particular intersections of material techniques, social relationships, pedagogical habits, and attitudes toward beauty, utility, and creativity. The approaches to artistic production found in craft communities point us away from sharp distinctions between “high” and “low” art, between solitary geniuses and nameless workers, between influence, imitation, and innovation. In this carefully argued book, Morwenna Ludlow asks what we would gain if we regarded late antique Christian literary production in a similar light. Ludlow recasts a collection of debates over imitation, rhetoric, early Christian pedagogy, …

Purple Rose, Chandra Mountain Jan 2022

Purple Rose, Chandra Mountain

Department of English and Foreign Languages

Chandra Lynn, also known as Chandra T. Mountain, is Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and Professor of English at Oakwood University. Though much of the writing she does these days is “scholarly and serious,” she has been writing almost her entire life. The proof is in the trove of notebooks and millions (slight exaggeration) of poems and drafts her husband “discovered” a few years ago. The poem above was written when she was 18; it is part of a collection she is curating entitled, Musings from My Younger Self.

Textiled Narratives: Branding, Consumption, And Mexican American Identity At The Turn Of The Twentieth Century, Andrew Michael Gordus

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

The NaCo apparel company out of Tijuana, Mexico, created a unique line of clothing and accessories in the late 1990s and early 2000s. With its success in Mexico, the brand chose to extend its reach into the lucrative US market. The company's focus on bicultural and binational images seemed a natural fit for a growing Latinx presence in the US. An analysis of the company's successes and failures in the new market highlights the continued importance of borders as separators of visual economies rooted in national histories and imaginations. Additionally, their experience reveals the complexities within Latinx communities that can …

The Goal

Nothing mattered more to me than winning. Friday-night lights shone down on the pitch, fans littered the stands, and the score was still zero to zero. I looked down at my mud-clad jersey then back up at the scoreboard. Five minutes left! When the soccer ball was at my feet life made sense; time both slowed down and sped up, and I was in control. As I ran down the pitch, I could feel my muscles pushing and pulling in perfect harmony. Time after time either the goalie stopped the ball or my shot was not as true …

Witchcraft Trials In The Rhine Region In The Sixteenth Century, Adam Cooper

Malleus Maleficarum

The Swamp And The Scaffold: Ethics And Professional Practice In The Writing Classroom, Dori Coblentz, Jonathan Shelley Jan 2022

The Swamp And The Scaffold: Ethics And Professional Practice In The Writing Classroom, Dori Coblentz, Jonathan Shelley

English Faculty/Staff Publications

Instructors within the writing across the curriculum (WAC) movement leverage student writing for learning and engagement beyond the traditional English or composition classroom. To this end, WAC pedagogy foregrounds the benefits of real-world active learning strategies. Educators often find it logistically difficult to create sustainable versions of these realistic environments, however. The same challenges faced by writing instructors present themselves across disciplinary contexts, including ethics and computer science instruction. In this article, we describe our integrated ethics module linking first-year composition students with computer science capstone design teams to better integrate the study of ethics into the writing classroom while …

In 1941, at age 16, she participated in the women’s USA Outdoor Track …

Two Trans-Atlantic Divorce Novels: In Camilla, Elizabeth Robins Counters Edith Wharton’S The Custom Of The Country, Joanne E. Gates Jan 2022

Two Trans-Atlantic Divorce Novels: In Camilla, Elizabeth Robins Counters Edith Wharton’S The Custom Of The Country, Joanne E. Gates

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

This paper argues that Elizabeth Robins' reading of The Custom of the Country (recorded in her diary, 25 November 1913) impacted the way Robins drafted her very next novel, Camilla. Unlike Wharton’s Undine, whose careers with men might be characterized by the sequence of her last names (Spragg Moffatt, Marvell, de Chelles, Moffatt), Camilla undertakes one long reflective flashback on her early life with her ex-husband, Leroy Trenholme, as she crosses the Atlantic, east to west, having been proposed to by a deeply caring and comforting Englishman. This reliving of the unraveling of her marriage (especially the scene of …

Janet Malcolm And Me: The Biographer Enters Her Book: Some Post-Modern Reflections On The Personal Of The Critical In Recent Biographies Of Women Writers, Joanne E. Gates Jan 2022

Janet Malcolm And Me: The Biographer Enters Her Book: Some Post-Modern Reflections On The Personal Of The Critical In Recent Biographies Of Women Writers, Joanne E. Gates

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

Largely because publishers resist the expenses of precise and plentiful documentation, contemporary biography is a slippery, sometimes stale, but sometimes electrifying discipline. If any recent biographical project deserves further attention and analysis, it is Janet Malcolm's three-part biography of Sylvia Plath, first appearing in the August 23 and 30, 1993 double issue of the New Yorker and now published in book form as The Silent Woman: Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes (Knopf, 1994). With the perspective of an autobiographer examining (yet never mentioning) the incendiary implications of her own "missing tapes" incident which led to the New Yorker's defense of …

Anonymity As A Bridge From Actress To Author: The Case Of Elizabeth Robins, Joanne E. Gates Jan 2022

Anonymity As A Bridge From Actress To Author: The Case Of Elizabeth Robins, Joanne E. Gates

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

Any scholar working on the origins of the feminist journey of the actress turned writer Elizabeth Robins ought to be aware of her two earliest short works of fiction she wrote and published in The New Review under nearly perfect anonymity. This paper will profile these two earlier stories, published in 1894 even before her first novel, George Mandeville's Husband, attracted attention when it appeared under her perhaps thinly disguised pseudonym, C. E. Raimond.

Robins saw the potential and, yes, to her mind, the necessity, of establishing herself as a writer so that she could more securely support herself. …

Writing Into Hope: Laughter, Sadness And Healing In John Gower's Confessio Amantis, Natalie S. Grinnell Jan 2022

Writing Into Hope: Laughter, Sadness And Healing In John Gower's Confessio Amantis, Natalie S. Grinnell

Faculty Scholarship

This article uses the theory of the narrative creation of the self to contend that the Confessio Amantis creates a space for narrative healing within the acknowledgement of mortality. Rather than being traditionally funny or ending in amorous or military victory, Gower’s poem uses the encyclopedia knowledge of the interpolated tales to establish a healing narrative in the face of failure and loss.
