Literary Analysis Assignment Sheet, Saundra Scott Jan 2022

Literary Analysis Assignment Sheet, Saundra Scott

Open Educational Resources

This is an assignment sheet for a literary analysis paper. The Literary Analysis paper is based off of two articles + a short story. The short story, "The Lesson" is an innovative and compelling story about young Black/African American Children understanding how the world doesn't favor those who are considered "poor;" they learn about social injustice.

The two articles by Elizabeth Peterson: "How "Bad English" Works Against Us" and "African American English" help students strengthen the connection between what African American English (AAE) is to how it is portrayed in Bambara's short story. Peterson explains the grammatical features of AAE …

Mental Health Attitudes And Knowledge Among Shia Muslims In America, Fatima Z. Hussain Jan 2022

Mental Health Attitudes And Knowledge Among Shia Muslims In America, Fatima Z. Hussain

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Mental health has received more attention and stigma associated with it has decreased over time in the United States. However, subpopulations have differing views on mental illness since cultural factors can shape perceptions of and influence access to mental health information. Previous studies have investigated such cultural factors among Sunni Muslims (the majority sect of Islam) and less so among Shia Muslims (the minority sect). To address this gap, two research questions were investigated in this project: (1) What are the mental health attitudes among Shia Muslim adults in the United States, and (2) How much mental health knowledge or …

The Interactive Impact Of Social Identities On Voter Turnout In The 2012 Presidential Election, Karla M. Mendez Jan 2022

The Interactive Impact Of Social Identities On Voter Turnout In The 2012 Presidential Election, Karla M. Mendez

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The first Black American president ran for re-election in the 2012 election, which saw record-breaking voter turnout. After this election, scholars sought to examine what social identities impacted voter turnout and, found that non-Hispanic Black voters played a critical role in shaping President Obama’s success. Although the effects of social identities on voter turnout are the focus of an extensive body of existing research, many scholars study the separate effects of characteristics, such as race/ethnicity, gender or party identification. Utilizing public opinion data from the 2016 General Survey Study (GSS), this paper seeks to examine the intersectional effects of race, …

Stop Asian Hate Zine, Alexandria Glover Jan 2022

Stop Asian Hate Zine, Alexandria Glover

Student Zines

This zine is a way to advocate for the Asian community. The graphic nature is purposeful as the hate crimes committed against Asians are atrocious themselves and should not be censored. This zine is supposed to make people feel uncomfortable because it needs to be seen and remembered. A bit of discomfort is nothing compared to the anxiety and fear Asians have in the U.S., especially since the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2. If enough people are horrified enough to advocate for change, then this zine has fulfilled its purpose.

Review Of David Lewis, A World From The Lost: Remarks On James Nayler's Love To The Lost And A Hand Held Forth To The Helpless To Lead Out Of The Dark (Inner Light Books, 2019), Carole Dale Spencer Jan 2022

Review Of David Lewis, A World From The Lost: Remarks On James Nayler's Love To The Lost And A Hand Held Forth To The Helpless To Lead Out Of The Dark (Inner Light Books, 2019), Carole Dale Spencer

Quaker Religious Thought

James Nayler has been an enduring enigma to historians. He’s been considered a madman and a saint. A variety of perspectives and interpretations, often conflicting, from political, sociological, psychological, theological, and literary standpoints have been offered; but one undeniable fact about Nayler that historians can agree on is that he was a charismatic figure. His charisma rivaled George Fox in the earliest period of the Quaker movement. But he was largely lost in the dustbins of Quaker history until the twentieth century, when four modern biographies were written as well as numerous scholarly articles in Quaker journals. And he continues …

Quaker Religious Thought

ABOUT THIS ISSUE

Welcome to the Spring 2022 issue of Quaker Religious Thought! Included in this issue are original theological and historical reflections on Quaker practice. The first three articles were given at the January 2022 Quaker Theological Discussion Group panel, “Quaker Approaches to Understanding the Holy Spirit: Pneumatologies in Global Perspective.” Grace Ji-Sun Kim’s article presents an important study of the Korean term han as it applies to the contemporary climate discussion in her article, “Climate Change and the Personal Presence of God.” She contends that an adequate view of the Holy Spirit can help address damaging relationships toward …

Decolonizing Quaker Moves To Innocence: What Would It Take To Decolonize The “Quaker Peace Testimony”?, Tom Kunesh

Quaker Religious Thought

To start talking about “decolonizing the quaker peace testimony,” we must first presume a previously colonized or colonial something, and then to presume quakerism acknowledges it participates in colonization and that that participation is problematic. But quakerism in general—apart from one article, one ad hoc working group, and several yearly meetings’ “repudiation” of roman catholic doctrines of discovery—has not directly addressed its robust participation in the anglo-american colonial past in the United States and elsewhere (genocide, land theft, racial cleansing, broken treaties, concentration of indigenous people into reservations, and re-education through “indian” boarding schools, a.k.a. assimilation camps), the present reality …

Utilizing Game-Based Learning To Promote Mental Health Advocacy In Black And Brown Communities, Ashlyn Stewart, Tracey L. Moore, Hira Roberts Jan 2022

Utilizing Game-Based Learning To Promote Mental Health Advocacy In Black And Brown Communities, Ashlyn Stewart, Tracey L. Moore, Hira Roberts

Pursue: Undergraduate Research Journal

The aim of this project was to explore the effectiveness of video games and game-based learning as a means of mental health advocacy within People of Color (POC) and their communities. Research has shown that within black and brown communities, a heightened stigma is attached to the discussion of mental health, often preventing those who are affected from seeking treatment. This unwillingness to accept and care for mental illness within communities of color is highly detrimental, especially in the context of conditions such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, where African-Americans and Hispanics are at a significantly higher risk of developing these …

Using Song To Teach Sight Words, Taylor Hagood Guin Jan 2022

Using Song To Teach Sight Words, Taylor Hagood Guin

Graduate Research Showcase

This research is about how a group of seven kindergarten classes used a short and straightforward song to recognize the following six common kindergarten sight words: on, off, up, us, no, & go. As a current music educator and former middle grades English teacher, I wanted to create an opportunity to establish cross-curricular connections in my music classroom. For this specific experiment, seven different classes, including General Education, Self-Contained Special Education, and English Language Learning classes, were selected. They were taught these six sight word songs through the “Sight Word Song.” I selected the sight words specifically because the students …

Impact Of A Puppet On Music Performance Anxiety In Elementary Students, Jessica Nohner Jan 2022

Impact Of A Puppet On Music Performance Anxiety In Elementary Students, Jessica Nohner

Graduate Research Showcase

Music Performance Anxiety (MPA) is a common problem among musicians and has been shown to impact young children. There are many factors that may contribute to student feelings of MPA including perfectionism. Music educators are in a unique position and have a responsibility to assist students with MPA. While some strategies have been used to help individuals cope with feelings of MPA, music educators do not have researched strategies available to them which are easily implemented in general music classrooms. In music therapy and psychology, puppets have been used in work with children. In this study I research the use …

Supporting Reading In Elementary Music Classroom, Jazmin Hunt Jan 2022

Supporting Reading In Elementary Music Classroom, Jazmin Hunt

Graduate Research Showcase

Many educators are posed with the task of supporting reading and math proficiencies of students, particularly in elementary school settings. It is the educator’s responsibility to take active part in the holistic growth of students. As music teachers, how can reading be intertwined in a way that can build a student’s reading score? Should there be additional learning taking place, or do music class curricula integrate reading well? Does music class actually have an effect on student reading skills? Supporting Reading with Music: Music Education and How It Supports Reading Proficiencies in Elementary School Students is a literature review that …

Finding Eternal Life At The Intersection Of Bergson And Proust, Kelly Capers Jan 2022

Finding Eternal Life At The Intersection Of Bergson And Proust, Kelly Capers

Graduate Research Showcase

Finding Eternal Life at the Intersection of Bergson and Proust is a research project that explores the relationship of spirit and matter attempting to answer the question: Does the Proust Effect prove humans have an eternal soul? The Proust Effect is defined as “the vivid reliving of events from the past through sensory stimuli” based on a passage in the novel Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust. Applying quantum mechanics to Proust’s themes of time and memory and philosopher Henri Bergson’s studies of matter and spirit, one can examine how the body and soul connect. Proust’s labyrinth of language offers a …

Persian Velvets Of The 17th Century: Symmetry, Craft, And Technology, Carol Bier Jan 2022

Persian Velvets Of The 17th Century: Symmetry, Craft, And Technology, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Symmetry is the organizing principle that underlies patternmaking in compound woven textiles of 17th century Iran. Persian velvets are particularly noteworthy for their complicated weave structure. What defines compound weaves is the interlacing of more than one set of warps (longitudinal elements held under tension at the loom) with wefts (transverse elements). Velvets introduce an additional set of supplementary warps held under differential tension. The weaving of a compound textile requires both a pattern harness and a structure harness for the interaction of warps and wefts. A weaver on the bench manipulates the structure harness for each passage of the …

Legal Strategies Used By Black Men During The Antebellum Period, A. D. Banse Jan 2022

Legal Strategies Used By Black Men During The Antebellum Period, A. D. Banse

AD Banse, "Legal Strategies Used by Black Men During the Antebellum Period" [Research Poster]

Digital Legal Research Lab REU Site, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2022

The Missouri Statute of 1807 existed as the primary act that somewhat ensured the freedom of those enslaved and pursuing their freedom. The act refuted laws such as the Futgitive Slave Clause of 1793 and 1850, and the Missouri Compromise, which were evidence that slaveholders held decisive political influence and could cast the Constitution in proslave terms (Baker 2012). These clauses essentially gave enslavers the right to seize enslaved people who escaped to free states deepening …

Habeas Corpus: Breaking Reservation Boundaries, Samantha Byrd Jan 2022

Habeas Corpus: Breaking Reservation Boundaries, Samantha Byrd

Digital Legal Research Lab

Dr. Katrina Jagodinsky’s Petitioning for Freedom examines marginalized peoples’ use of habeas corpus in the American West from 1812 to 1924. This project has uncovered Indigenous manipulation of the American legal system to counter the challenges of colonialism. Indigenous peoples used habeas to protest, and sometimes successfully mitigate boarding school experiences, forced removal, and confinement on reservations. This study aims to show how Indigenous peoples and other minorities had a complex understanding of the law and used it to their advantage.

Adorno, Beckett…Wagner, Artaud: Reflections On Stefan Sorgner’S Philosophy Of Posthuman Art, Russell Kilbourn Jan 2022

Adorno, Beckett…Wagner, Artaud: Reflections On Stefan Sorgner’S Philosophy Of Posthuman Art, Russell Kilbourn

English and Film Studies Faculty Publications

This essay reflects on the question of posthuman(ist) art by way of Stefan Sorgner’s book, Philosophy of Posthuman Art, which makes an important initial contribution to the nascent investigation of the significance of creative and imaginative expression from a critical posthumanist perspective. From the understanding that we cannot (yet) do without the subject as ground of the self, I elaborate a theory of the dynamic ‘subjective trinity’ (self, other, and transcendent subject) underpinning the occidental aesthetic experience construed in visual-spatial terms, exemplified in the cinema. From this basis I explore two possible avenues of posthumanist aesthetic expression: First, the secular …

Radiant Sites: Projection And The Mobile Spectator In Contemporary Moving-Image Installations, Taylor Hobson Jan 2022

Radiant Sites: Projection And The Mobile Spectator In Contemporary Moving-Image Installations, Taylor Hobson

Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines contemporary moving-image installations that use projected images to expand and elaborate upon the cinematic experience. It focuses on works by Douglas Gordon (b. 1966), Jim Campbell (b. 1956), and the partnered artists Janet Cardiff (b. 1957) and George Bures-Miller (b. 1960), all of whom have reconfigured the classical cinematic system of viewing since the 1990s. Through their works, I trace the term “expanded cinema” as a literal extension of projected light from the screen into the open gallery and beyond. I argue that the term “projection” – as thrown light, mental anticipation, and moving bodies – brings …
