Military Liberalism On The East Florida "Frontier": Implementation Of The 1812 Constitution, Alejandro Quiroga Fernandez De Soto
Military Liberalism On The East Florida "Frontier": Implementation Of The 1812 Constitution, Alejandro Quiroga Fernandez De Soto
Florida Historical Quarterly
The first quarter of the nineteenth century was a time of great political change in both Spain and its American empire. The French invasion of the Iberian Peninsula in 1808 led to a long war for independence, as the Spanish people and government sought to oust Napoleon's troops and form a constitutional monarchy. During the war deputies from throughout the empirr formed the Cortes Generales, or National Assembly, in Cadiz and proclaimed the first Spanish constitution in 1812. The change of government in Spain had consequences for the American colonies, and scholars have pointed out the role played by the …

The three contributors to this symposium have been engaged in the study of twentieth-century race relations and civil rights throughout their respective careers. When asked to comment on the articles in Ihis special issue and reftect upon their relevance to Florida and American history, they eagerly accepted the challenge. Through their common elements as well as their individuality, the commentaries of Glenda Alice Rabby, David H. Jackson Jr., and Clarence Taylor engage in the ongoing conversation about the role of race in shaping Florida and the United States.

The Origins Of Tallahasseee's Racial Disturbance Plan: Segregation, Racial Tensions, And Violence During World War Ii, Jon Evans
Florida Historical Quarterly
On the evening of Easter Sunday 1945, a quiet darkness fell on Tallahassee, home to Florida's state government, the Florida State College for Women, and Dale Mabry Airfield. After a day of holiday festivities and celebration, activities in the small town began to wind down. Yet, around 10 p.m., the stillness was broken by the sounds of angry voices and shattering glass int he city's predominantly black Frenchtown neighborhood. The calm of that Sunday evening was marred by a disturbance involving black troops Dale Mabry Field and Carrabelle's Camp Gordon Johnston. the melee began, according to Tallahassee Chief of Police …
Whitening Miami: Race, Housing, And Government Policy In Twentieth-Century Dade County, Raymond A. Mohl
Whitening Miami: Race, Housing, And Government Policy In Twentieth-Century Dade County, Raymond A. Mohl
Florida Historical Quarterly
Throughout the twentieth century, government agencies played a powerful role in creating and sustaining racially separate and segregated housing in Dade County, Florida. This pattern of housing segregation initially was imposed early through official policies of "racial zoning," During the New Deal era of lhe 1930s, federal housing policies were implemented at the local level to maintain legally segregated housing and neighborhoods. Such policies included the appraisal system established by the federal Home Owners Loan Corporation, which helped to create the discriminatory lending system known as "redlining." In addition, under the New Deal's federally sponsored public housing program, local housing …
Colorless Primaries: Tampa's White Municipal Party, Pam Iorio
Colorless Primaries: Tampa's White Municipal Party, Pam Iorio
Florida Historical Quarterly
The oppression of southern blacks in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century came to be known as the age of Jim Crow. Freedoms wrung from lhe battlefields of the Civil War, and expanded during Reconstruction, were stripped away with oppressive measures designed to assert while supremacy. The right of suffrage was quashed with a vengeance. Black men and some black women who had voted during Rcconstruction, and had even held public office, were divested of this right by acts that ranged from stark intimidation and violence to implementation of exclusive primaries, literacy tests, and poll taxes.

The Mayor's "Henchmen And Henchwomen, Both White And Colored": Edward H. Armstrong And The Politics Of Race In Daytona Beach, 1900-1940, Leonard R. Lempel
Florida Historical Quarterly
Writing about his early twentieth-century childhood in Daytona, the renowned theologian Howard Thurman related a story about his older cousin and idol. Thorton Smith. A semi-pro baseball player in his youth, Smith had established himself by the 1920s as a successful restaurateur in Midway, the most business-oriented of Daytona's three black neighoorhoods. He purchased supplies from Edward Armstrong, a white grocer and aspiring politician who wanted to loosen the Ku Klux Klan's grip on the city; Smith suggested to him that the Klan could be defeated only if blacks were allowed to vote. After in itially rejecting the idea, the …

Public Goods From Private Data: An Effectiveness And Justification Dilemma For Digital Contact Tracing, Andrew Buzzell
Public Goods From Private Data: An Effectiveness And Justification Dilemma For Digital Contact Tracing, Andrew Buzzell
The Journal of Sociotechnical Critique
Debate about the adoption of digital contact tracing (DCT) apps to control the spread of COVID-19 has focussed on risks to individual privacy. This emphasis reveals significant challenges to ethical deployment of DCT, but generates constraints which undermine justification to implement DCT. It would be a mistake to view this result solely as the successful operation of ethical foresight analysis, preventing deployment of potentially harmful technology. Privacy-centric analysis treats data as private property, frames the relationship between individuals and governments as adversarial, entrenches technology platforms as gatekeepers, and supports a conception of emergency public health authority as limited by individual …

Memories From The Great War: An Analysis Of Jackson Purchase Veterans' Changes In Perspective Since 1914, David Wallace
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
The First World War affected the lives of millions, creating collective memories of hardships, uncertainty, political tension, and animosity toward foreign enemies. In the United States, World War I was a turning point in the nation’s growth and development, but on a smaller scale it was a critical historical moment in the individual lives of the veterans who served. This research project showcases the experiences of the Jackson Purchase’s WWI veterans with an emphasis on their perceptions during the war, their reasons for enlisting, the countless once-in-a-lifetime experiences they had along the way, the hardships they faced, and the remarkable …

King Behind Colonial Curtains: Kasilag And The Making Of Filipino National Culture, Paul Gabriel L. Cosme
King Behind Colonial Curtains: Kasilag And The Making Of Filipino National Culture, Paul Gabriel L. Cosme
International Studies Honors Projects
Filipino National Artist Lucrecia “King” Kasilag sought to preserve folk cultures and melded these with her Western training to produce works—scholarly, pedagogical, and compositional—that shaped national music and culture. This thesis is a critical biography that combines perspectives from postcolonial studies, political economy, and musicology to highlight forces that shaped Kasilag’s life while illustrating her successes and shortcomings on national culture. Through this biography, I argue, Filipino national culture must originate from intersectional struggles and negotiation among elites and masses; that this culture is about both resistance and acceptance—a national culture that is syncretic and quintessentially dynamic.
Vocal Athleticism: An Exploration Of Exercise Physiology Principles In The Voice Studio, Katherine Lawrence
Vocal Athleticism: An Exploration Of Exercise Physiology Principles In The Voice Studio, Katherine Lawrence
Student Theses
Despite the physicality of singing, the application of exercise physiology principles in vocal development has only recently been explored and is not standard practice in training. Due to the correlations between sports and singing, an integration of exercise physiology principles and practices in the voice studio informs training methods and contributes to enhanced performance as well as vocal wellbeing. The purpose of this paper is to explore practical applications of exercise training principles in voice study and their role in fostering optimal production while decreasing the potential for injury.
