A Translation Study: Idioms, Metaphors, Humor, And Expressions From Dutch To English, Shelby Kasse Apr 2022

A Translation Study: Idioms, Metaphors, Humor, And Expressions From Dutch To English, Shelby Kasse

2022 Student Academic Showcase

In this literary research essay, I have translated a Dutch short story into English. I translated the text in two different ways, a literal/direct translation, and a revised and research-based translation. This text includes Dutch idioms, metaphors, humor, and expressions. The translation of these directly have no significant meaning in English, which is why a translation of these should be done carefully. This research paper examines the best ways and difficulties of translating a source language, its cultural-bound references and values, into a target language.

Renaissance Fashion Of England And Italy, Alexis Litteken Apr 2022

Renaissance Fashion Of England And Italy, Alexis Litteken

2022 Student Academic Showcase

This research project is aimed at exploring the popular fashion and beauty styles of Renaissance-era England and Italy, two nations that held immense power both politically and socially during the period. Examining the influences behind contemporary trends of the Renaissance can aid in the understanding of what people were like, allowing a look into beliefs, activities, or messages a person might convey through their clothing. From the Medici family to a more middle-class family, this project will explore how a nation’s fashion can speak to more than just current style, but to the ideological, political, and societal movements being experienced.

Interlingual Translation Of A Spanish Children's Book, Addison Haddock Apr 2022

Interlingual Translation Of A Spanish Children's Book, Addison Haddock

2022 Student Academic Showcase

Translation is often invisible to the general population, yet it is a pivotal component of our success as a social species. The vast majority of humans could not name even a fraction of the thousands of languages present, yet many of them pervade our day-to-day lives. Consequently, a translator has the paramount role of taking an author’s original meanings and relaying this information to an audience of another language, another dialect, or another period of time. To experience this for myself, I translated the children’s story La Llorona: The Crying Woman by taking its original Spanish and transferring its meaning …

"Shakedown Street: The Grateful Dead And The Commodification Of Hippie Culture", Zachary A. Graham Apr 2022

"Shakedown Street: The Grateful Dead And The Commodification Of Hippie Culture", Zachary A. Graham

Honors College Theses

The Grateful Dead were one of the most successful and enduring bands to come out of the original hippie counterculture of the late 1960’s. Beginning as a small, experimental blues-rock group with no desire to pursue commercial success, fame and fortune nonetheless found the Dead over the course of their three decades on the road. Through constant touring, a consistent level of apathy towards business and making money, and with the help of arguably the most dedicated fanbase in music history, the Grateful Dead became more than just a band, they were the face of a new cultural phenomenon that …

Orlando's Martin Andersen: Power Behind The Boom, H. Bailey Thomson

Newspaper publishers often have been key partners with other business and civic leaders in promoting the expansion of their cities. The goal of these coalitions, which sociologist Harvey L. Molotch calls "growth machines," has been so intensify land use and make money. Such boosterism has been especially prevalent in the South since World War II, as civic-commercial elites sought to modernize government and attract industry, measuring their success mainly in conservative terms such as new factories, office buildings, and expressways.

A St. Augustine Crime Passionnel, Vivien Miller Apr 2022

A St. Augustine Crime Passionnel, Vivien Miller

Florida Historical Quarterly

The crime passionnel is not formally recognized in North American law. Nevertheless, any reading of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century southern court records and pardon files reveal that, as acts of interpersonal violence, crimes of passion "generated by thwarted love, jealousy, [and] hatred that rise to the level of obsession" were not uncommon. One such crime was perptrated by Alexander Campbell. This was the unusual case of a middle-class white man who was convicted of first-degree murder in a Florida court in 1891 and sent to the convict lease system where he remained for a considerable length of time. This partiular Florida …
