Global Trends In International Music: How Does Globalization Affect The Way We Consume Music?, Beckett Pechon-Elkins Oct 2020

Global Trends In International Music: How Does Globalization Affect The Way We Consume Music?, Beckett Pechon-Elkins

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

In this project, I used Python to analyze trends in foreign music in four different countries around the world: the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Brazil. Using various top singles charts, I was able to create a dataset of foreign singers for each country spanning the decades from the 1950s/60s to present day. After cleaning, filtering and processing this data, I applied historical events to analyze trends in the data and found a notable decrease in music produced by international artists in recent years. This contradicts the prevailing notions of globalization, forcing us to ask the question: Is …

Understanding Covenants And Communities: Jews And Latter-Day Saints In Dialogue, Bradley J. Kramer Oct 2020

Understanding Covenants And Communities: Jews And Latter-Day Saints In Dialogue, Bradley J. Kramer

BYU Studies

Organized topically, this book’s sixteen essays provide a wealth of information about Jewish and Latter-day Saint perspectives, scripture, experience, worship, culture, and politics. However, at least for me, the true treasure of these essays is not so much informational as it is relational.

Editors’ Introduction, James R. Kearl, Dana M. Pike

BYU Studies

The Brigham Young University Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies was dedicated on May 16, 1989. Located on Mount Scopus, the Center offers an amazing view of Jerusalem and puts the Center’s students in the heart of Jerusalem within easy walking distance of the Mount of Olives and the Old City. During the past thirty years, the Jerusalem Center has made a significant impact on Jerusalem as well as on all those who have studied and worked there. Known locally as “The Mormon University,” this beautiful building with its many arches provides an inspiring venue for studying history, culture, and …

The Lead-Up To The Dedication Of The Jerusalem Center, David B. Galbraith Oct 2020

The Lead-Up To The Dedication Of The Jerusalem Center, David B. Galbraith

BYU Studies

I’ve been asked to focus on the construction period of the Jerusalem Center rather than the student program that, at this point in time, is the heart and soul of the Center. My wife, Frieda, and I lived for twenty years in Israel, where we also raised our family of five children. We were blessed to witness some marvelous miracles while living there, but none more marvelous than those that were intimately linked to the Center. I had the great opportunity to be personally involved with the story of the Center that follows here.

What if our prayers were the wind to God, and carried our thoughts like the smell of cut grass and barbecued meat and skunk musk and cow dung and tire-kicked dust?

Peace Offering, Elena Jarvis Jube Oct 2020

Peace Offering, Elena Jarvis Jube

BYU Studies

I killed a peace dove once.

It was spring. I was driving down a stretch of road lined with leftover remnants of apple and cherry orchards not yet bulldozed for new houses, new subdivisions. I don’t know where I was coming from, down that particular road, though one corner of my brain thinks it might have been the hospital, and that I was anxious and strung out from lack of sleep, which is why I didn’t see the dove in the road there, small, grey, invisible against the asphalt. I seem to remember it was early morning, the light just …

Faculty Perspectives And Experiences At The Jerusalem Center, Gaye Strathearn, Andrew C. Skinner, S. Kent Brown, Ed Stratford, Kent P. Jackson Oct 2020

Faculty Perspectives And Experiences At The Jerusalem Center, Gaye Strathearn, Andrew C. Skinner, S. Kent Brown, Ed Stratford, Kent P. Jackson

BYU Studies

Strathearn: In 1985, my friend and I decided to backpack around the world. I said that if we were doing that, the first thing I wanted to do was get to the Holy Land. We were on a dime traveling, and we just had a Bible in one hand and a Let’s Go Europe in the other. That visit to the Holy Land started a fire within me, a love of that land. I was home about a year and a half when Elder James E. Faust spoke at our stake conference in Australia. He began by noting that “the …

Junto Diaz’S The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao: A Narrative Of Identity And Diaspora, Samirah Almutairi Oct 2020

Junto Diaz’S The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao: A Narrative Of Identity And Diaspora, Samirah Almutairi

English Faculty Publications

Junto Diaz’s novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao raises the question of the identity formation for the Caribbean in diaspora. Diasporic Caribbean people struggle with understanding their difference and recognizing the important of assimilating to other people’s lives and cultures when they leave their home country. The struggle of the main character, Oscar Wao, in the novel is established perfectly well through apparent identity crisis that is manifested in his cultural displacements, childhood memories, real-life situations, and unsuccessful relationship with the other sex. It is a problem that Oscar creates his passage towards constructing a national identity, which …

Introduction To Asian American Studies: Final Zine Project (5), Delaney Tax, Maria Zesbaugh, Ashley Montrezza Oct 2020

Introduction To Asian American Studies: Final Zine Project (5), Delaney Tax, Maria Zesbaugh, Ashley Montrezza

Ethnic Studies Student Zines

This zine allowed us to confront the ways in which colonization and its historical implications play into modern race relations. This is especially evident in the ways bodies are valued and devalued based on social location, birthplace, and racial appearance. Our weekly zines confronted the direct interactions between colonial violence and individuals, as well as their communities. We also worked to intentionally contrast this to the western construction of whiteness, and pulled from historical and modern examples of how whiteness has been weaponized against Asian communities in order to further marginalize them. Adjacency to whiteness, however, has also been used …

A Study Of Asian American Issues In The United States, Nicoline Pedersen, Krista Celo, Eden Stilman, Seren Ventullo Oct 2020

A Study Of Asian American Issues In The United States, Nicoline Pedersen, Krista Celo, Eden Stilman, Seren Ventullo

Ethnic Studies Student Zines

Throughout this zine you will explore a variety of obstacles that Asian Americans have faced in regards to their immigration and acclimation into American society and culture. Over the last century, individuals from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa have either migrated to America in hopes of a better life, or have been forced out of their homes due to war conflicts or as a necessity for cheap labor. Despite the means of their arrival, Americans have historically maintained an imperialistic outlook that America is the superior country. While the white American believes he is saving these transpacific countries from …
