God's surprises might be perplexing, but they are always life-changing.

Aatj’S Role In Diversity And Inclusion: An Opportunity To Transform Into A Well-Integrated Organization, Suwako Watanabe Oct 2020

Aatj’S Role In Diversity And Inclusion: An Opportunity To Transform Into A Well-Integrated Organization, Suwako Watanabe

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

According to the survey results, 57% of the survey respondents said no to the question, “Is the Japanese language educator community in North America diverse one?” (Mori, Hasegawa, Park, and Suzuki, this volume). This result suggests that the American Association of Teachers of Japanese (AATJ) as a professional organization needs to improve diversity within the field. What is a more important question is whether or not our organization and its membership as a whole embrace the value of diversity and put it into practice in every aspect of their profession on a daily basis. The survey results make it clear …

A New Twist On The “Un-African” Script: Representing Gay And Lesbian African Weddings In Democratic South Africa, Michael W. Yarbrough Oct 2020

A New Twist On The “Un-African” Script: Representing Gay And Lesbian African Weddings In Democratic South Africa, Michael W. Yarbrough

Publications and Research

This essay examines the media coverage surrounding two African weddings of lesbian and gay couples in South Africa, as a lens onto the evolving cultural politics of black queerness in that country. Two decades after South Africa launched a world-leading legal framework for LGBTI protections, I argue that these media representations depict the growing inclusion of black LGBTIQ people as a process of bridging the supposed “gap” between homosexuality and African culture. This new “bridging the gap” script seemingly rejects the older, dominant script portraying homosexuality as intrinsically “un-African.” But I argue that it instead reproduces the “un-African” script in …

Several Houses, Anthony L. Cudahy

Theses and Dissertations

Within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the thinking that informed my painting practice fixated on the purgatorial temporal space of waiting, a questioning of utopian and apocalyptic impulses, and the preservation of deceased artists' archives.

The Coca-Cola Foundation's Funds, Katherine Frey Oct 2020

The Coca-Cola Foundation's Funds, Katherine Frey

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

The Coca-Cola Company is widely known to spend billions of dollars on advertising. Many of these advertising campaigns center around the company's philanthropic efforts. In 2017, the Coca-Cola Foundation has helped to donate over $138 million to different organizations in order to give back to the community. I used data from this past completed year (2019) to see how much the Coca-Cola Foundation is contributing to specific causes. Using Coca Cola bottle caps, I will show the amount of money being donated to each area. Some of these areas include women's empowerment, the environment, and education, which are the main …

Comparative Analysis: Animal Research Versus Animal Testing, Hannah Vanhoose Oct 2020

Comparative Analysis: Animal Research Versus Animal Testing, Hannah Vanhoose

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Currently, there is a push to eliminate the use of animals in all experimental settings. Animal rights organizations like PETA and the Animal Welfare Institute consistently advocate for the well-being of animals in many aspects, including in the laboratory setting. While it is necessary to eradicate the maltreatment of animals found in unregulated testing centers, it is important to distinguish the differences between testing and research involving animals. The focus of this research is to demonstrate that while it is essential to cut down on harmful testing, the use of animals in medical research is crucial.

I will share with you why nurses should be considered as innovators and be able to participate at healthcare hackathons.

As well as how students are not educated on this topic in the classroom setting.

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

The goal of this study was to research what is a good depiction of depression and anxiety on T.V.shows, as well as the effects it has on people who consume the depictions. Another purpose was to conclude whether my initial thoughts of if people could decipher a realistic depiction or not was supported.

The Effect Mental Health Portrayals In Television Shows Have On Viewers, Cade Kinzel Oct 2020

The Effect Mental Health Portrayals In Television Shows Have On Viewers, Cade Kinzel

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

The goal of this study was to research the connections between portrayals in television shows and real-life people with mental health conditions. In addition, another purpose was to conclude whether my initial thoughts, which include believing a minimal numbers of TV shows contain any positive effect on viewer mental health, were supported. Misperceptions about mental health, including a justified feeling to hide mental conditions, judge others for theirs, or use it as a way for humor, are often given in television shows when mental health is included in the story (Smith, et al. 2019). I created a blog that revolved …
