Patronage, Audience And Ownership Of The Psalter Of Blanche Of Castile, Blair C. Gallon Mar 2020

Patronage, Audience And Ownership Of The Psalter Of Blanche Of Castile, Blair C. Gallon

LSU Master's Theses

The so-called Psalter of Blanche of Castile (Psautier latin dit de saint Louis et de Blanche de Castille, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal, Paris, MS 1186 réserve) is a well-preserved illuminated manuscript made in Paris in the first half of the thirteenth century. As a devotional book, it witnesses the concerns of a thirteenth century individual of high rank, most likely a woman. As its modern name indicates, scholars link its existence to the Queen of France Blanche of Castile (4 March 1188 – 27 November 1252; r. 1226-34, 1248-52). No firm documentation, however, attests to the circumstances …

James Kallembach's Antigone: A Conductor's Guide, Dominique Petite Mar 2020

James Kallembach's Antigone: A Conductor's Guide, Dominique Petite

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

James Kallembach’s music has been premiered by acclaimed choral groups such as Seraphic Fire and Lorelei Ensemble. It is a commission by the latter that this dissertation explores. In 2015 Lorelei Ensemble commissioned Kallembach to write a piece for Lorelei Ensemble’s “Witness” program, on the subject of martyrdom as it was conceptualized in ancient and modern times. Kallembach set the Sophocles play, Antigone, with interpolated texts from Sophie Scholl and pamphlets from the White Rose, a group dedicated to resisting the Nazis in Germany during the Second World War. The composition is a forty-minute oratorio for SSSSAAAA choir and …

A Conductor's Guide To Amass By Jocelyn Hagen, Matthew J. Myers Mar 2020

A Conductor's Guide To Amass By Jocelyn Hagen, Matthew J. Myers

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Contemporary American composer Jocelyn Hagen grew up in Valley City, North Dakota, where she found an early love for singing, playing instruments, and composing. After completing degrees at St. Olaf College and the University of Minnesota, Hagen began a career as a full-time composer. Her appointment as Composer-in-Residence for The Singers led to her first major multimovement work, amass (2011).

Though Hagen planned to write a traditional setting of the Catholic Mass, she struggled to accept the text of the “Credo” as the only path to salvation. Thus, she substituted spiritual poems from a variety of faith traditions to create …

Symphony No.2 And The Text Setting Of Henry Purcell's Dido And Aeneas, Sungho Kim

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This work is conceived as a unit that has two parts. Part one is an original composition, Symphony No. 2. This piece is scored for symphony orchestra and it is a sequel of the composer’s master thesis, a symphonic poem titled Moonlight Sprite, which describes the various landscapes of imaginary sprites in nature. The compositional techniques include whole tone scale, octatonic scale, pentatonic scale, atonality, bitonality, polytonality, tone clusters, and minimalism. The piece’s orchestration style and techniques are mainly influenced by Stravinsky, Bartok, Schoenberg, Webern, Penderecki, Charles Ives, and Dinos Constantinides.

Part two is an analysis of the text …

Adaptations: The Graphic Novel And Shakespeare's Hamlet, Candice Boren Mar 2020

Adaptations: The Graphic Novel And Shakespeare's Hamlet, Candice Boren

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis covers three main ideas. First, there is a discussion of how an adaptation should be studied, using the film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings in comparison to the books written by J. R. Tolkien. This establishes what relationship an adaptation has to its original text and the capability of achieving fidelity. The second section focuses on graphic novels and the unique characteristics they possess, looking specifically at two graphic novels, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and March by John Lewis. This section ends with an analysis of how the graphic novel could prove to be beneficial to …

Appalachian Sermons In Marshall's Special Collections: Holdings And Research Possibilities, Robert Ellison Mar 2020

Appalachian Sermons In Marshall's Special Collections: Holdings And Research Possibilities, Robert Ellison

English Faculty Research

This presentation focuses on a collection of Appalachian sermons housed in the Special Collections Department at Marshall University. As the subtitle suggests, it has two main parts. The “Holdings” section provides a brief survey of these materials (the ministers represented in the collection, their denominations, when they served and where, and so on) and shows the work that has been done thus far to place the copyright-free materials online.

The “Research Possibilities” section gives an overview of the theories, topics, and approaches used in the field of sermon studies. I argue--as my colleagues and I have done in other projects--that …

Women's Use Of Intimate Apparel As Subtle Sexual Signals In Committed, Heterosexual Relationships, Lyndsey K. Craig, Peter B. Gray Mar 2020

Women's Use Of Intimate Apparel As Subtle Sexual Signals In Committed, Heterosexual Relationships, Lyndsey K. Craig, Peter B. Gray

Anthropology Faculty Research

Current literature on women’s sexual signaling focuses on modes of attracting potential, new sexual partners, but says little about women’s subtle sexual signals in committed, romantic relationships. Subtle sexual signals are inherently private and are only visible to the intended audience; a woman might use these signals to elicit or accept a sexual response from her partner or to increase her overall attractiveness, or attractivity. In this study, we sought to identify women’s use of intimate apparel as a proceptive or receptive behavior as well as the effects of relative mate value, relationship commitment, relationship satisfaction, and sexual functioning. A …

Instrumentalization Theory: An Analytical Heuristic For A Heightened Social Awareness Of Machine Learning Algorithms In Social Media, Andrew R. Miller Mar 2020

Instrumentalization Theory: An Analytical Heuristic For A Heightened Social Awareness Of Machine Learning Algorithms In Social Media, Andrew R. Miller

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

New innovations in information management and communication technologies have produced technological assemblages which have radically altered the way people socialize and interact with the world. The most significant and ubiquitous of these technologies is what is colloquially referred to as ‘machine learning.’ Like most, if not all, technologies, machine learning models are neither wholly good nor bad. Their functional ethics are largely determined by the context in which they are employed. However, their ubiquity demands that we develop a heightened social consciousness of the way machine learning simultaneous constrains, manipulates and democratizes social processes. In order to develop better social …

09. A Philosopher With A Sense Of Humor, Eugenio Zaldivar

Praxis, Poems, and Punchlines: Essays in Honor of Richard C. Richards

In this very short acknowledgment I think I’d like to accomplish two things. First, I’d like to give a sense of the affect that having seen Richard in action has had on me. Second, I’d like to point to an important development in philosophy of humor contributed by Richards in his work “A Philosopher Looks at the Sense of Humor” which I believe needs to be central to the philosophical discussion of humor and joking going forward. On Minimal Morality, John Thrasher Mar 2020

On Minimal Morality, John Thrasher

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

"For many years, Michael Moehler has been one of the most original and thoughtful political and moral philosophers around. He is perhaps the most straightforward and full‐throated defender of what Gerald Gaus (2011) has called 'orthodox instrumentalism.' From this, Moehler develops two interesting results: a Kantian flavored theory of justice and a novel, multilevel contractarian theory of social morality. In these short comments, I will discuss what I take to be the core of Moehler's theory and then raise some questions and challenges to that theory."

He asks about his crops at home and the possibilities of sale, and notes an “ugly letter” …

Little and internationally acclaimed librettist Royce Vavrek, Dog Days is told through the eyes of a 13-year old girl, named Lisa. This project serves as a performer’s guide to Lisa’s three arias. American Indians residing in the Northern Plains region of the Indian Health Service experience some of the most severe cancer-related health disparities. We investigated ways in which the community climate among an American Indian population in an urban community in the Northern Plains region influences community readiness to address cancer. A Community Readiness Assessment, following the Community Readiness Model, conducted semi-structured interviews with eight educators, eight students, and eight community leaders from the American Indian community in Omaha’s urban American Indian population and established the Northern Plains region community at a low level of readiness to address cancer.
