Transregional Southeast Asia: Perspectives From An Outlier, Caroline S.; Hau Mar 2020

Transregional Southeast Asia: Perspectives From An Outlier, Caroline S.; Hau

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

The Philippines is commonly understood to occupy an anomalous position in Southeast Asian area studies. This essay explores the logic, politics, and logistics of the inclusion and exclusion of the Philippines in or from Southeast Asian studies. Perspectives on and from the Philippines can help rethink and refine concepts of “region” by emphasizing, rather than glossing over, the transregional connections and histories that link the Philippines and its localities to its neighbors, to various regions, and to the world. Area studies need not be hobbled by an intellectual parochialism that cordons off analysis at any given local, national, regional, and …

“Philippine Indios Were European Constitutional Spaniards”: Filipino Reception Of The Cádiz Constitution, 1813–1814, Abisai; University Pérez

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle traces the impact of the 1812 Cádiz Constitution on the native population of the Philippines. It analyzes the contradictions that the constitution posed to the juridical status of natives who were granted citizenship rights and explores how the natives received the charter through the constitutional oath, a civic festival whereby local subjects swore fealty to the charter. It analyzes the Spanish legal culture that sustained the special legal régime granted to natives since the late sixteenth century, the debates that originated in the Cortes de Cádiz, and the modified version of the constitution that was created to dovetail with …

De Estatura Regular: Height And Filipino Bodily Representations During The Spanish Colonial Period (1521–1898), Gideon; University Lasco

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle seeks to contribute to the “history of height” in the Philippines by looking at Filipino bodily representations and height differences during the Spanish colonial period. From Pigafetta’s account onward, European chroniclers typically described Indios (natives) as having average, varied, or unremarkable height. However, during the nineteenth century a new discourse emerged: that of a short-statured Filipino. Likely the consequence of actual physical changes and nascent racial ideologies on the part of Spaniards, this view would set the stage for Filipinos to be typologizedas “short”—and for shortness to be problematized as a sign of racial and social inferiority.KEYWORDS: HEIGHT • …

Under The Aegis Of Science: The Philippine Scientific Community Before The Second World War, Jonathan Victor Baldoza Mar 2020

Under The Aegis Of Science: The Philippine Scientific Community Before The Second World War, Jonathan Victor Baldoza

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thearticle explores the formation of a prewar community of Filipino scientists nurtured and trained within the scientific order that American scientists installed, developed, and managed in the early part of the twentieth century. It examines vital institutions that shaped and recast the landscape of scientific knowledge production in the Philippines before the Second World War. It explores the ways by which Filipino scientists, endowed with intellectual legitimacy but ambiguously situated in relation to US rule, actively participated in planning for the forthcoming nation, bearing the torch of science as key to the nation’s progress and modernity.KEYWORDS: COLONIAL HISTORY OF SCIENCE …

« Ceindre La Terre » : Sur Quelques Tours Du Monde, Jean-François Duclos Mar 2020

« Ceindre La Terre » : Sur Quelques Tours Du Monde, Jean-François Duclos

20th and 21st Century French and Francophone Studies International Colloquium

Forgetting The Mine Wars: Erasing Insurrection In West Virginia History, Samuel Heywood Mar 2020

Forgetting The Mine Wars: Erasing Insurrection In West Virginia History, Samuel Heywood

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the concerted effort in the West Virginia school system to forget a massive labor movement in the early 20th century. Business leaders and government leaders turned to the classroom to try and control the memory of future generations to ensure a positive perception of the coal industry and avoid any more violent confrontations. After a brief summary of the Mine Wars for context, this thesis uses textbooks to analyze how the authors omitted the conflict and instead used patriotic propaganda to create loyal citizens. Although the Mine Wars have since been included in state history textbooks, …

Disease Mongering: How Sickness Sells, Vanessa C. Iroegbulem Mar 2020

Disease Mongering: How Sickness Sells, Vanessa C. Iroegbulem

Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics Essay Contest

“Disease mongering” is the practice of widening diagnostic boundaries of an illness and promoting their public awareness to expand the markets for treatment and to increase profits. This tactic typically used by pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment manufacturers, insurance companies, and even some doctors and patient groups, has become a great concern. Disease mongering has since increased in parallel with “medicalization,” which attempts to label normal human conditions as medical problems, thus becoming the subject of medical study, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment. This paper first seeks to examine how an increasing amount of life’s natural conditions and ailments are being seen …

The Book Of Red, Stacey Balkun

Graduate Student Council Research Grants

Overview: A first-year PhD student in the English Department, I am working closely with Dr. Ann Fisher-Wirth, Editor of The Ecopoetry Anthology, on a creative writing project, “The Book of Red.” My project aims to both uncover the environmental damage wrought upon my hometown of Piscataway, New Jersey and to broaden the field of possibility surrounding ecocriticism, especially regarding fabulist literature and fairy tales. In addition to researching the ecological crises wrought upon Piscataway, I aim to examine the myriad ways fairy tales, fables, and other children’s stories have shaped and continue to shape the way our culture views the …

German Immigration And Its Ties To Landscape Change In Nebraska, Lindsey Labrie Mar 2020

German Immigration And Its Ties To Landscape Change In Nebraska, Lindsey Labrie

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

This thesis uses a multidimensional approach to frame the different waves of German immigration within the context of land use change in Nebraska. By recounting the historical challenges and struggles Germans faced in their homelands, this thesis provides similarities between historical immigration patterns throughout the state. Observing the timing of these movements of people paints a clearer picture of how these immigrants might have helped change the farming and cultural landscapes of Nebraska. Knowing and recognizing historical immigration in Nebraska cultivates a deeper appreciation for the current relations between immigrants and Nebraska’s physical landscape.

Imaging Politics And Professional Culture In Managing Islamic University Libraries In Indonesia, L. Nurdin, Sri Rohyanti Zulaikha Mar 2020

Imaging Politics And Professional Culture In Managing Islamic University Libraries In Indonesia, L. Nurdin, Sri Rohyanti Zulaikha

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The concept of imaging politics and professional culture are two approaches that influence and control each other in managing library performance. This research is conducted by initially looking at imaging politics that operates on aspects of academic qualifications, library accessibility, and institutional governance among three libraries. These institutional images are analyzed through three patterns of imaging politics, i.e. mirror of reality, map of reality, and simulacrum of reality, albeit this last pattern is not found. The second analysis is based on professional culture that functions as a ballacing system. Professional culture in library management shows itself as a referential standard …

Katie Short's Senior Voice Recital, Katherine Short Mar 2020

Katie Short's Senior Voice Recital, Katherine Short

Honors Theses

For my honors thesis, I used my Senior Voice Recital. When starting the process, I met with my thesis chair, Dr. Karen Kness to discuss which repertoire I wanted to perform for the recital. We focused on picking song selections ranging from the Baroque musical era to the mid- 1900s. As part of my requirement, I needed to select at least thirty-five minutes of music to present and this music needed to be in at least five different languages. Half of my repertoire was selected from my previous semester of Applied Voice lessons and the other half I learned over …

When teaching Amelia Earhart, textbooks, trade books, and primary sources can be used, however one must be careful with the misrepresentations each resource can portray. To look at what is misrepresented, omitted, and included within primary and intermediate grade level trade books, 32 books were scrutinized. The trade books being analyzed were found to have some historically representative and misrepresentative elements …
