Buying History: Trends In Ohio Historical Markers, Nicole Slaven
Graduate Student Research Symposium
This is an extension of previous research from the NCPH 2019 Annual Conference Poster Session and GSRS 2019 Poster Session: “Are We Diluting History?: A Holistic Analysis of Ohio Historical Markers”. Research for this poster involved a random sample of approximately 20% of Ohio Historical Markers. The 327 markers that made up the sample were then analyzed and graded on a ten-point scale in four categories: historical significance, historical integrity, context, and mechanics. From there many conclusions were made after crunching the numbers and sorting the grades by decade, subject matter, and other parameters.
Trends from this study include: the …
Ethics Of Dental Marketing, Min Son
Ethics Of Dental Marketing, Min Son
Philosophy and Religious Studies Presentations
While dentistry does not deal with immediate life and death situations like the mainstream medicine, preserving oral health is crucial to protect the people’s overall health. Then, is dental marketing morally impermissible because it is selling people’s opportunity for good health? It is important to note that skills and knowledge of dentists are not the only “products” sold from dental offices, and not all products are related to basic healthcare needs. For example, consider teeth whitening services. While whitening teeth may be necessary to better one’s self-esteem and improve one’s social life, it is not a basic healthcare need—whiter teeth …
Studi Maqashid Asy-Syariah Atas Peristiwa Pidana: Pelecehan Seksual Melalui Media Elektronik Dalam Penagihan Utang-Piutang Fintech Ilegal
Journal of Islamic Law Studies
The rise and implementation of Fintech is a result of the formation of lifestyle and consumptive behavior. This pattern of consumption behavior bases the use of commodities on desire and not on need. This happens because people continually want to complete their desire to own or use something that is beyond their needs even though they are still financially unable. One of the behaviors was exploited by Fintech, which provides financing services illegally. Illegal Fintechs are considered dangerous because they are not subject to and comply with existing regulations so that the potential deviation in the implementation process can be …

Hukum Kredit Kepemilikan Rumah (Kpr) Dalam Perspektif Islam, Ira Apriyanti
Journal of Islamic Law Studies
Home is one of the primary needs that must be reached. The importance of sufficing these needs causes the demand for homes is increasing every year. Compared to 2018, the growth of Home Ownership Loans (KPR) in January 2019 increased by 147 basis points (bps) from the original 10.89% to 12.36%. It is estimated that credit growth is expected to increase in line with optimism about the strengthening monetary and economic conditions, supported by the risk of lending that is relatively well maintained. But to fulfilling these needs, not every person can easily buy a house in cash. As a …

Tinjauan Hukum Islam Terhadap Larangan Kawin Sasuku Di Masyarakat Minangkabau, Vidya Nurchaliza
Journal of Islamic Law Studies
Customs in Minangkabau are known as customs that are along with Islamic norms. Almost all cultures in Minangkabau are Islamic teachings that are followed by the majority of the Minangkabau people. However, there is one custom that causes polemic in the community, namely the prohibition of marriage of Sasuku. Whereas in Islamic Law there are no prohibition of marriage with one tribe. On the other hand, according to Indonesian marriage law, a legal marriage is a marriage made according to the religion and beliefs of the bride and groom. This research was conducted using the normative juridical method of secondary …

Tinjauan Undang-Undang Dasar Negara Republik Indonesia Tahun 1945 Sebagai Konstitusi Yang Islami, Raihan Hudiana
Journal of Islamic Law Studies
The Constitution as a form of collective agreement is an important document containing values to be the highest referral system in regulating the life of nation and state. Looking at the sociological fact that Muslims are the majority in Indonesia, the spirit that was built at the beginning was to ensure the absolute necessity of how the basic values and main concepts of Islam can be fulfilled, while keeping in mind the needs and ensuring the rights of people from other religions. The view of some Muslims who assume founding father Indonesia has injured the spirit of the struggle of …

Sexual assault committed against children become one of the polemics in the society. The government as the state protector accommodates the polemic by making the law in form of Law Number 17 of 2016 concerning the Stipulation of Government Regulation in place of Law Number 1 of 2016 concerning Second Amendment to Law Number 23 of 2002 concerning Child Protection. The regulation accommodated the society’s need by arranging punishment for the perpetrators of sexual assault affecting children cases. Article 81 of Law Number 35 of 2014 in the form of first amendment to the Child Protection Law concerning criminal threats …

Evolutionary Bioethics Advanced By Ernest Everett Just: Implications For Biology, Ethics, And Theology, Theodore Walker
Evolutionary Bioethics Advanced By Ernest Everett Just: Implications For Biology, Ethics, And Theology, Theodore Walker
Perkins Faculty Research and Special Events
Ernest Everett Just (1883-1941) is an acknowledged “pioneer” in biology, being honored with a Black Heritage postage stamp in 1996. Here we discover that Just also made pioneering contributions to general evolutionary bioethics (distinct from special medical bioethics) by advancing a cell-biology-rooted theory of the origin and continuing evolution of ethical behavior influenced by the “law of environmental dependence.”
See especially “The Origin of Man’s Ethical Behavior (1941, unpublished book manuscript) by Ernest Everett Just and Hedwig Schnetzler Just, discovered in 2018 among the collected papers of E.E. Just at the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center at Howard University.
Accordingly, evolution is …

Parasite: A Film Review On Capitalism, John K. Kim
Cinesthesia
Bong Joon Ho’s critically acclaimed Parasitebrings a refreshing perspective on capitalist ideology that dominates the Western world today. Its clever and thrilling commentary on the various aspects of capitalist ideology is as vast as it is sophisticated. The aim of this paper is to use Zizek’s ideas on ideology and Foucalt’s work on discourse to unpack some of the main arguments the movie makes about capitalism. I begin by discussing the film’s central commentary on capitalist tenets and move onto the film’s use of “unspoken” or “unassimilable” statements. I close with a brief discussion on the symbolic significance of …

Honors Theses
Formulated Ataxia is an athletic and vigorous choreographic work based on the overall theme of recognizing order within chaos. With a cast of eleven dancers, I created a world that depicts the cycle of anxiety and how I seek organization within chaos. Choreographically, I toyed around with aspects of my neurological condition, synesthesia. Synesthesia can be described as a way of organization people and situations with numbers. Part of my research involved delving deep into the theory of chaos, as it mirrors the cyclical nature of my mental and emotional instability. This work invites a thrilling and exhausting experience for …

Honors Theses
This portfolio serves as the fulfillment of both my honors thesis for the Lee Honors College, and my Department of Dance capstone for DANC 4800: Graduating Presentations. The typical process for DANC 4800 involves producing a concert in collaboration with the rest of the senior B.F.A. class, in which each member presents an original piece of choreography. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 crisis and the switch to distance education, our concert was cancelled, and we were forced to abruptly stop rehearsing. In this transition, my project shifted from the creation of a new work to the revisiting of a solo …
Spiritual And Religious Interventions For Medically High-Risk Adults: A Systematic Review, Nathanael J. Strissel
Spiritual And Religious Interventions For Medically High-Risk Adults: A Systematic Review, Nathanael J. Strissel
Senior Honors Theses
This systematic review is an update and expansion to the population and methods of a previous systematic review concerning spiritual and religious interventions for the well-being of terminally ill adults. After expanding the criteria to incorporate a more diverse population and including non-randomized experimental studies that contained relatively few concerns of bias, the results of the review are inconclusive due to insufficient data. The lack of usable data in the field highlights the ethical and theoretical issues with the use of experimental trials in analyzing the efficacy of spiritual and religious interventions. The development of spirituality in healthcare will remain …
True Theatricality: What Separates Live Theatre From All Other Entertainment, Sarah Michelle Beattie
True Theatricality: What Separates Live Theatre From All Other Entertainment, Sarah Michelle Beattie
Senior Honors Theses
In order to better understand the art of live theatre in comparison to its many counterparts, an in-depth study of the elements of live theatre that separate it must be accomplished. Through Aristotle’s The Poetics, to many contemporary studies of theatricality, to recent scripts incorporating those elements and effectively using them, the analysis of theatricality can be applied to an original script of its own kind. Some elements that have been discovered are double casting, expression through song, and even a break in the classic two act structure. The application of these elements of theatricality present a lot more issues …

Virtual 2020 Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
This paper seeks to explore the history of absinthe in the United States, as well as anti-absinthe movements and the invented illness of absinthism. The primary focus of the project is from the beginnings of absinthe’s popularity in the United States (in the 1840s) to its banning in 1912 to its relegalization (in a form) in 2007. Absinthe in the United States was treated differently and actively singled out as worse than other forms of high-proof alcohol, with campaigns against absinthe specifically, absinthe bans before Prohibition, and relegalization well after Prohibition.
Engl 400: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Song, "We Are The World": A Call To Change -- Yesterday, Today, And Tomorrow (And A Potential Rhetorical Framework For Covid-19 Relief Efforts), Cammy Toddy
Virtual 2020 Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
On the night of January 28, 1985, the charity single song, “We Are The World,” written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, was produced in A&M Studios in Los Angeles. At the recording studio, there was a sign that said, “Check your egos at the door,” which acted as a visual reminder for why these artists were there. This idea was put in place by producer Quincy Jones, who knew he had one night to bring over 40 of the country’s biggest stars together for a cause much bigger than themselves. A rhetorical analysis of “We Are The World” reveals …

Megachurches Can Have Mega Problems - Insights From Toxic Leadership In Modern Megachurches, Brandon Billings
Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects
The Christian megachurch is a relatively recent phenomenon, championing new ideals and theological practices for faith communities around the world. Megachurches, by definition, are Christian churches that consist of over a thousand attendees. Most megachurches are independent from a denomination – a characteristic that brings a multitude of advantages as well as challenges. One specific challenge for megachurches is the problem of potential abuse by pastors that are characterized by toxic and destructive leadership. In recent years, many Christians, as well as non-Christians, have been shocked by the number of megachurch pastors revealed as bullies, narcissists, or sexual assailants. Although …

A loose adaptation of Dante Alighieri’s epic poem Inferno, LimboLand uses Alighieri’s model of the nine circles of Hell to illustrate the five stages of grief. In a script designed for theatre for young audiences, Dante, a young child, travels through different rooms as he attempts to cope with and understand his sister’s death. Dante follows Virgil, an older child, who knows a lot about the afterlife system without understanding any of it. The play includes an appendix …

The Perceived Effect Of Transformer Core Metal On Musical Sounds, Addie Lopshire-Bratt
Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects
Transformers are an electronic component used to change the voltage from one part of a circuit to the next. They appear in most audio equipment from the earlier eras but left a sonic signature on the sound waves passed through them. Most research conducted on the “sound” of transformers has focused on their effect on simple sine waves passed through the component, not complex–musical–waves. This thesis seeks to organize the research available about transformers and simple sine waves and compare it with the gamut of opinions that audio professionals hold about their sound.

Edmund Burke has been attributed the saying, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” I am in my second draft of a screenplay exploring the tangled web of factors which led to the ethnic cleansing campaign against the Rohingya Muslims, a minority group in Myanmar, which began in late 2016.
