Labor In The Formation Of The California Wine Industry, Nicholas Crenshaw
Labor In The Formation Of The California Wine Industry, Nicholas Crenshaw
History & Classics Student Scholarship
Major: History
Faculty Mentor: Dr. René Alexander Orquiza, History and Classics
My thesis brings attention to the creation of the California wine industry from a bottom-up perspective, highlighting the images and voices of the various farm workers who enabled the region’s widespread popularity and success in the late twentieth century. From the late 1800s to World War II, the California wine industry was established, challenged, and reinvented amidst racist rhetoric by labor organizations, the Chinese Exclusion Act, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. As laborers in multiple capacities, Native Americans, Chinese Americans, Japanese Americans, Indian Americans, and women were essential to …

Scrivere Di Islam. Raccontare La Diaspora, Simone Brioni Dr., Shirin Ramzanali Fazel
Department of English Faculty Publications
Scrivere di Islam. Raccontare la diaspora (Writing About Islam. Narrating a Diaspora) is a meditation on our multireligious, multicultural, and multilingual reality. It is the result of a personal and collaborative exploration of the necessity to rethink national culture and identity in a more diverse, inclusive, and anti-racist way. The central part of this volume – both symbolically and physically – includes Shirin Ramzanali Fazel’s reflections on the discrimination of Muslims, and especially Muslim women, in Italy and the UK. Looking at school textbooks, newspapers, TV programs, and sharing her own personal experience, this section invites us to change the …

This project is an examination of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s writings, particularly focused on Hawthorne’s identity, philosophy, and spirituality. Placing these ideas in the context of early American history as well as in the context of Hawthorne’s biography, Cecelia Little focuses on how Hawthorne offers pieces of a new and complex philosophy of the individual human soul within the human community. This powerpoint includes a structured compilation of many, but by no means all, of her findings, and she plans to delve much further into Hawthorne’s life and works. The primary focus …
Blake’S Method: Blake Imagining Milton In The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell, Micaela Freeman
Blake’S Method: Blake Imagining Milton In The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell, Micaela Freeman
English Student Scholarship
Major: English
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Bruce Graver, English
The Marriage of Heaven and Hell is William Blake’s articulation of his reaction to John Milton’s Paradise Lost. After analyzing Blake’s reaction to Paradise Lost, I will suggest how Blake’s reading of Milton helped shape 20th-century criticism, specifically post-war Miltonic criticism. My paper will begin by considering Blake’s rewriting of Milton in the ‘Argument’ of The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, starting at the Adamic myth. I will continue my analysis with looking at the famous passage on Plate 6 when Blake writes, “The reason Milton wrote in fetters when he wrote …

The Ethical Ramifications Of The Sexual Division Of Labor In The Modern World, Alexandra L. Baker
Philosophy Student Scholarship
Major: Psychology, Women and Gender Studies
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Jeffrey Nicholas, Philosophy
As long as the sexual division of labor exists, human flourishing will be stunted for people of all genders, races, sexualities, and walks of life. In order to respond to this epidemic of restrained flourishing we, as fellow human beings, owe it to one another to make a change, to take that first step in the right direction.

A New Adventure In China: Personal And Theological Discoveries Around Jingjiao And Nestorian Christianity, Tianyi Yuan
Theology Student Scholarship
Major: Theology and Philosophy
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Arthur Urbano, Theology
This project explored the inculturation and vitality of faith that made the mission of ancient Syrian Nestorian Christianity into China possible. My research is summarized into four discoveries:
1. the discovery of the history of missionary journey, religious exchanges and the theological connection between Nestorian Christianity in Syria and Jingjiao (or the “luminous Religion,” which is the historical Chinese name of Nestorian Christianity) in China;
2. the discovery of Jingjiao documents;
3. the discovery of fundamental Christian doctrines in Jing-Jiao documents;
4. the discovery of Jingjiao relics in China, which …

Unheard Voices Against The Invisible Empire: Black And Catholic Responses To The Second Ku Klux Klan, William Hartl
Unheard Voices Against The Invisible Empire: Black And Catholic Responses To The Second Ku Klux Klan, William Hartl
History & Classics Student Scholarship
Major: History and Philosophy
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Darra Mulderry, History
Historians on the Ku Klux Klan have only recently begun to re-examine the place of the Klan in American history, coming to the unsettling conclusion that the Klan and its message were more widely accepted than many previous historians acknowledged. However, this new revisionist history of the Klan lacks any thorough consideration of the experiences of Klan victims. In my thesis, I examine how Black and Catholic newspapers from 1916-1922 describe the activities and ideologies of the KKK so that I can then compare their accounts of the Klan with …
The Polish Question At Yalta, 1945: Public Opinion On The Polish Agreements, Christopher Maxim
The Polish Question At Yalta, 1945: Public Opinion On The Polish Agreements, Christopher Maxim
History & Classics Student Scholarship
Major: History and Political Science
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Jennifer Illuzzi, History and Classics
"For my thesis, I attempted to understand the Polish agreement reached at the Yalta conference and its reception by the public in the United States and Britain. I argued that Poland was the central issue at the Yalta conference and that the Big Three alliance deteriorated as a result of the agreements reached on Poland. I believe that understanding the public reception of the Polish agreements is important in understanding the history of the Yalta conference. Therefore, I sought to incorporate how the topic was covered in …

History & Classics Student Scholarship
Major: History and Spanish
Faculty Mentor: Fr. David Orique O.P., History and Classics
Based on the rhetorical strategies of important Argentine nationalist figures, this project proposes some possible sources imbedded within the Argentine historio-cultural imagination that provided a fertile environment in which these ideologies could take root and flourish. The historical and cultural strains that arguably influenced the pervasiveness of anti-Semitism among some Catholic Argentines include the following: the inherited colonial tradition of Hispanidad, which admires the philosophy, theology, and politics of the Reconquista, the Inquisition, and the Counterreformation; 19th century caudillismo and the reimagination of the dictator Juan Manuel …

Mid 20th Century America Through The Words And Lens Of Allen Ginsberg, Lily M. Conover
Art & Art History Student Scholarship
Major: Art History and American Studies
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Deborah Johnson, Art and Art History
Allen Ginsberg began producing provocative poetry in 1955 when he first devoted his life to writing. There was even a court case in 1957 to decide whether or not his most famous piece, Howl, should be banned for its content. All of this press made Ginsberg a famous poet; however, he also had what he called an “amateur hobby,” his photography.
In the same way he wrote, Ginsberg photographed the world around him: members of the Beat Movement, his friends, lovers, etc. Most of the …
Othello As A Domestic Tragedy: Marriage And Moral Extremism, Sophie A. Miller
Othello As A Domestic Tragedy: Marriage And Moral Extremism, Sophie A. Miller
Global Tides
The dehumanization of female characters in Othello by viewing them through antiquated and dichotomous views of women and female morality is a major factor in the play's tragic ending. These women exist in the context of changing marriage customs that came along with changes in government and religious structures of authority. Through Iago's influence, Othello comes to shift from the more modern companionate view of marriage into an outdated patriarchal model. The play is one of many Early Modern Dramas examining marriage but does not fit in with Patient Griselda plays or with domestic tragedies in which unfaithful wives are …

This article is a look into where the film industry is heading in the coming years. To gain insight on this topic, it was critical to trace the history of this ever-evolving industry as well as delve into the key trends shaping the industry today and their possible implications. The research compiled on this topic indicates that shorter length content controlled by creators themselves, as opposed to large studios or corporations, and distribution methods that are beneficial to creators are on the horizon for the film and media industry.

What She Became?, Sarwa Abdulghafoor
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
WHAT SHE BECAME? is a thesis comprised of a thirteen- page introduction and 35 poems. As is evident from the title, the poems are about the poet’s unsettling personal and creative journey, as well as her personal movements, her traumatic childhood, her individual and cultural backgrounds. The author takes her readers through the experiences of women in war-torn Iraqi Kurdistan from the early 80s to the present day. Her poetry gives you a glimpse of life under a patriarchal regime that attempts to stifle women’s voices. The introduction dives deeper into her own personal history as a female Kurdish writer, …

280— Exploring The Geographic Distribution Of Childbed Fever Deaths In Mid-19th Century Rochester, Ny, Meaghan Parks
GREAT Day Posters
Childbed fever, formally called puerperal fever or puerperal septicemia, is an infection typically contracted by women after childbirth. Historically, childbed fever was a serious threat to maternal health. Childbed fever is caused by exposure of open wounds or abrasions, which are common after giving birth, to group A and B Streptococcal bacteria. Ignaz Semmelweis discovered that hand washing using a chlorinated solution reduced cases of childbed fever in 1847. This project reviews the instances of death from childbed fever in Rochester, New York from 1837-1860 and later from 1907-1919 and attempts to determine which areas of the city had the …

The “riot grrrl” movement was an underground subculture of music that began in Washington State (Particularly in Olympia) in the early 1990s. It consisted of all female bands that combined feminist values and politics in the form of punk music. It spread quickly across the nation, and the US, where it went on to influence the globe, and their society and politics, becoming a much more international movement. Here, we will be covering the foundations of the “riot grrrl” movement, list a few bands and their impacts on the nation, and the significance of the movement on aspects of society, …

The birth control pill was legalized in the United States in 1965, and 34 years later, in 1999, the birth control pill was legalized in Japan. For decades, Japan clung to pronatalist ideas for moral and economic reasons; preventing births and abortions were not socially acceptable actions. Furthermore, a decreased birth rate was considered an economic threat, as a smaller workforce would seemingly result in decreased productivity. Despite the negative preconceptions about the effects of birth control being long-held in Japanese society, activists, such as Margaret Sanger and Shidzue Ishimoto, disputed them by opposing the government's censorship policies. Activists sought …

Inconceivable: An Analysis Of Assisted Reproductive Technology For The Church, Mary Elizabeth Gresham
Senior Honors Theses
Infertility pushes the boundaries of emotional and physical health, which is why many couples inside and outside the church turn to Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) for a solution. Despite what has seemed like silence from the Church, some individuals have braved the biological confusion and ethical dilemmas to evaluate the technology. Three major ethical viewpoints have emerged that each prioritize something over medical technology, namely community, order, or human dignity. This paper serves to educate pastors and church leaders on the ever-changing biology of ART as well as give voice to Christians that have spoken out on this issue. At …

The Red Army Faction, active from 1970-1998, was an infamous West German far-left terrorist group. Its ideology and numerous terrorist acts not only left a lasting impact upon the politics and culture of Germany, but noteworthy is also the fact that the group inspired the creation of countless works of art. This research paper seeks to understand and explain this phenomenon. It argues that the artworks inspired by the RAF are a form of Vergangenheitsbewältigung, a peculiarly German concept “coming to terms with the past,” most often used in relation to fiction and art exploring the …
