Noticing Existence, Mary Puls Apr 2020

Noticing Existence, Mary Puls

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

Noticing Existence is a photography project that came out of a time when I lived in a new place, knew no one, and the only way to get by day to day was through interacting with strangers. During that season, I learned the importance of human connection like I had never known before. In this project, I use the camera in a collaborative process as a means to engage with strangers mostly in the Nashville area. Fear surrounds the idea of talking to people we do not know, but over the years, and through both times of loneliness and intense …

"Love Is More" An Autobiographical Concept Album, Madeleine Lefler Apr 2020

"Love Is More" An Autobiographical Concept Album, Madeleine Lefler

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

As a fledgling artist, my purpose in the creation of this album was to undergo a deconstructive experience that enabled me to explore formative events in my life that have contributed to who I am today, especially in regards to my aesthetic preferences as an artist and my personal views of the world. The results of this deconstruction are the ten paired songs and images that compose this thesis. My hope is that each song and image work together to encapsulate the event itself and present my emotional climate during the time at which it occurred, and that my audience …

Serving With Pride: Military Experience And The Formation Of The Queer Female Identity In Mid-Century America, Kathlene Ward, Elizabeth Escobedo, Susan Schulten Apr 2020

Serving With Pride: Military Experience And The Formation Of The Queer Female Identity In Mid-Century America, Kathlene Ward, Elizabeth Escobedo, Susan Schulten

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

At the inception of World War II, the United States military adapted to include women within its ranks with the creation of the Women’s Army Corps. Likewise, psychology’s implementation into military procedures legitimized systematic exclusion and removal of queer persons seeking military involvement. Such factors resulted in a particularly unique environment for queer servicewomen. The birth of the Cold War brought about a new wave of heterosexual expectations that forced queer individuals in the U.S. military even further into the closet. This project seeks to uncover how gender and sexuality expectations placed upon queer women serving in the World War …

The Subtle Body: Religious, Spiritual, Health-Related, Or All Three?, Kathryn Heislup Apr 2020

The Subtle Body: Religious, Spiritual, Health-Related, Or All Three?, Kathryn Heislup

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

In the West today, Eastern philosophies of the subtle body have been changed, appropriated, and popularized within modern forms of yoga. The subtle body refers to assumed energy points within the human body that cannot be viewed by the naked eye, but is believed by several religious traditions to be part of our physical existence. Notions of subtle body systems have migrated and changed throughout India and Tibet over many years with much controversy; the movement of these ideas to the West follows a similar controversial path, and these developments in both Asia and the West exemplify how one cannot …

Islamic Revivalism And Democracy In Malaysia, Ashton Word, Ahmed Abd Rabou Apr 2020

Islamic Revivalism And Democracy In Malaysia, Ashton Word, Ahmed Abd Rabou

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

The paper examines democracy and secularism in Malaysia, a state rooted in Islam, and how it has been implemented in a country with a majority Muslim population. It briefly outlines how Islam was brought to the region and how British colonialism was able to implement secularism and democratic practices in such a way that religion was not wholeheartedly erased. Indeed, peaceful decolonization combined with a history of accommodating elites served to promote a newly independent Malaysia, to create a constitutional democracy which declares Islam as the religion of the Federation, and simultaneously religious freedom. Despite the constitution, the United Malays …

Establishment Of The Classical Saxophone: The Evolution Of Instrumental Design And Performance Into The 20th Century, Emily Nicol, Art Bouton Apr 2020

Establishment Of The Classical Saxophone: The Evolution Of Instrumental Design And Performance Into The 20th Century, Emily Nicol, Art Bouton

DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive

The instrumental design of the saxophone has evolved dramatically from its original patent in 1846. Referencing instruments from the St. Cecilia’s Hall Music Museum at the University of Edinburgh, this article explores the historical origins of the saxophone and traces the evolution of its design into the 20th century. Original research was completed through analysis of unique antique saxophones at St. Cecilia’s Hall and historical source materials in order to determine how, despite its intention to be used as a classical instrument, many factors such as politics, instrument structure, finances, and musician attitude at the time of the saxophone’s invention …

The Sun Cuts In, Madison Manns Apr 2020

The Sun Cuts In, Madison Manns

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

My work seeks to tear down the privileging of the objective at the expense of the subjective—the universal truth at the expense of the knowledge in the body, in the being—in order to restore the fruitful dialogue between the subjective observer as the object of perceived stimuli that become the mover. As a high-achieving individual encouraged in academic endeavors—one intimately acquainted with the language of prestige and intellect—I am seeking a new way to address theory through a return to material language; language connected to, informed by, and describing the world in the way that we know, rather than what …

Philosophical Perspectives, Jochen Albrecht Apr 2020

Philosophical Perspectives, Jochen Albrecht

Publications and Research

This entry follows in the footsteps of Anselin’s famous 1989 NCGIA working paper entitled “What is special about spatial?” (a report that is very timely again in an age when non-spatial data scientists are ignorant of the special characteristics of spatial data), where he outlines three unrelated but fundamental characteristics of spatial data. In a similar vein, I am going to discuss some philosophical perspectives that are internally unrelated to each other and could warrant individual entries in this Body of Knowledge. The first one is the notions of space and time and how they have evolved in …

On Primary Matter & Causality: An Investigation Into The Nature Of Aristotelian Ontology, Addison Hinton Apr 2020

On Primary Matter & Causality: An Investigation Into The Nature Of Aristotelian Ontology, Addison Hinton

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper investigates the problems which arise from integrating a notion of prime matter into Aristotle's works. After an analysis of both The Metaphysics and The Physics, it becomes clear that prime matter arguments do not adhere to Aristotle's ontological hierarchy. After exposing the flaws of the traditional prime matter argument, the extended prime matter argument, and the prime matter as a principle of change argument, a new interpretation of how Aristotle could respond to this problem of prime matter is presented. Aristotle's Final Cause serves to be a better candidate for the position which other scholars have granted …

"You Have Witchcraft In Your Lips": Sensory Witchcraft In Shakespeare's Antony And Cleopatra And Macbeth, Hannah Kanninen Apr 2020

"You Have Witchcraft In Your Lips": Sensory Witchcraft In Shakespeare's Antony And Cleopatra And Macbeth, Hannah Kanninen

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Scholarship on witches and witchcraft within Shakespeare’s plays has been a popular subject for many scholars. But one of Shakespeare’s most famous characters has not yet been integrated into this scholarship: Cleopatra from Antony and Cleopatra. Although scholars have often noted her “witchiness,” none have argued for an interpretation of Cleopatra as a witch. This is because traditional definitions of witchcraft have not been able to include Cleopatra. In comparison, Lady Macbeth from Macbeth has often been cited as the fourth witch in the play. But this interpretation relies upon examining Lady Macbeth’s perceived masculinity, which subsequently also makes her …

From The Shadows: Setting As An Expression Of Character Development In The Epic Fantasy Genre, Leah Henson Apr 2020

From The Shadows: Setting As An Expression Of Character Development In The Epic Fantasy Genre, Leah Henson

Senior Honors Theses

Epic fantasy is a genre defined by its setting. It offers writers the opportunity to be incredibly specific with the way setting contributes to the overall story, specifically as an aid character development. In order to successfully use setting to support character development, the writer must understand what preconceptions with which the reader enters the epic fantasy genre and what purpose setting plays in the overarching story world. The writer must determine what setting elements to include and, just as importantly, which to leave out. Finally, because setting is such an abstract component of writing, it is useful not only …

Pro-Confederate Sympathy And Its Results In Northern Kentucky, Joel Shutt Apr 2020

Pro-Confederate Sympathy And Its Results In Northern Kentucky, Joel Shutt

Senior Honors Theses

During the Civil War, Kentucky was deeply divided in sentiment between Union and Confederate sympathies. Although these divides could be found anywhere, even within the smallest of towns, the population of some regions numerically favored one side or the other. Even so, there was always a vocal and active minority present, leading to political and even violent contention. This thesis seeks to understand the role that pro-Confederate sentiment played in northern Kentucky during the war. It will investigate how the region influenced the war and public sentiment statewide, and the nature of the conflict within. It will investigate geographic, social, …

Old Testament Election: God’S Exclusive Means Of Bringing About Global Redemption, Parker Williams Apr 2020

Old Testament Election: God’S Exclusive Means Of Bringing About Global Redemption, Parker Williams

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis will seek to explore the doctrine of election as it appears in the Old Testament. It will attempt to provide a robust, biblical conception of the doctrine, shedding light on its nature and purpose, viewing the Bible as a singular story of God’s redemptive work. It will consider and assess election as God’s act of divine prerogative—being at times individual but primarily corporate. While inherently partial, effort will be taken to defend the doctrine against common objections this partiality draws. Rather, it will be shown that as the means by which He initiated His gracious plan of salvation, …

The Clean Wehrmacht: Myths About German War Crimes Then And Now, Narayan J. Saviskas Jr. Apr 2020

The Clean Wehrmacht: Myths About German War Crimes Then And Now, Narayan J. Saviskas Jr.

Honors College Theses

On October 1st, 1946, the Nuremberg high command trails ended. The executions and life sentences of representatives of the German military and political elite were carried out by the Allied powers. At the time, the Soviet Union posed a greater threat than the Germans tried at Nuremberg. Years later, on October 9th, 1950, former officers of the German military gathered in Himmerod Abbey. Together they wrote the Himmerod Memorandum, which laid the foundation of the German rearmament and called for the release of German soldiers (Wehrmacht) and Schutzstaffel (SS) members convicted of war crimes. The Allies, desperate for another line …

Vagueness And The Logic Of The World, Zack Garrett Apr 2020

Vagueness And The Logic Of The World, Zack Garrett

Department of Philosophy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this dissertation, I argue that vagueness is a metaphysical phenomenon---that properties and objects can be vague---and propose a trivalent theory of vagueness meant to account for the vagueness in the world. In the first half, I argue against the theories that preserve classical logic. These theories include epistemicism, contextualism, and semantic nihilism. My objections to these theories are independent of considerations of the possibility that vagueness is a metaphysical phenomenon. However, I also argue that these theories are not capable of accommodating metaphysical vagueness.

As I move into my positive theory, I first argue for the possibility of metaphysical …

Creation Care As Caring For Human Beings: An Environmental Justice Case Study, Jeffrey S. Lamp, Kathryn J. Moder, Megan R. Munhoffen, Cade A. Rich, Nathan B. Von Atzigen Apr 2020

Creation Care As Caring For Human Beings: An Environmental Justice Case Study, Jeffrey S. Lamp, Kathryn J. Moder, Megan R. Munhoffen, Cade A. Rich, Nathan B. Von Atzigen

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

A special ORU Student study directed by Dr. Jeff Lamp.

Caring for God’s creation is a burgeoning area of interest among Christians in recent decades. In many Christian circles, however, caring for creation is not given high priority in rankings of the duties of Christian disciples in the world. This article will argue that caring for creation is a biblically mandated call for God’s people in the world and derives from the role of human beings as caretakers of creation, creation’s status as a recipient of God’s salvation in Christ, and the connection between human beings and the other-than-human creation. …
