Kentuckiana, And A Dash Of Cambodia: A Collection Of Short Stories, Brodie Lee Gress Jul 2019

Kentuckiana, And A Dash Of Cambodia: A Collection Of Short Stories, Brodie Lee Gress

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The following is a collection of five short stories set in regions familiar to me: “Dewberry Park,” “YouLead,” and “The Color Violet” in Indiana; “Mens Rea” in Kentucky; and “Tory Ride” in Cambodia. Gay identity plays a role in many of these stories, and other themes explored include family, region, socioeconomics, gender, mentality, and change. These stories are concerned with people on the brink, failing and surviving all the same. Some of them are intended to weigh, and some to satirize. I hope they all nick their readers.

The Impact Of Musical Components On Retrieval Performance, Adkins Franklin Dane Jul 2019

The Impact Of Musical Components On Retrieval Performance, Adkins Franklin Dane

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Many students claim that they can study well while listening to music (Anderson & Fuller, 2010; Patton, Stinard, & Routh, 1983), but how does listening to music affect students’ ability to encode and recall studied information? Previous research on background music and attention has revealed mixed results, with some studies indicating that background music can help reduce inattentional blindness (Beanland, Allen, & Pammer, 2011), while others suggest that music may hinder the attention of the listener (by Shih, Huang, & Chaing, 2012). Additionally, individual differences in working memory capacity impact one’s ability to store and retrieve information, as well as …

Free Magazines: A Successful Business Model: Innovation For Print Publishing In Thailand, Siriya Jitpimolmard Jul 2019

Free Magazines: A Successful Business Model: Innovation For Print Publishing In Thailand, Siriya Jitpimolmard

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Although the overall advertisement revenue in Thailand has declined in the print magazine industry and the number of magazine titles has significantly fallen over the years due to internet disruption, free-copy magazines have continuously remained profitable. Most above-normal performance of free-copy magazines is due to a multi-sided platform of resource-based view (RBV) which is structured in the business model innovation developed by Osterwalder & Pigneur (2009). This model relies heavily on mass distribution within a city. The research investigates and analyses above-normal performance in the free-copy magazine sector using the multi-sided business platform to propose the best practice business models.

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Samoreang is a historical community in the "Hua Hin" region of Thailand's Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. It is an unique fishing community and famous resort with historical value. Recently it has come under business and land use pressures that are negatively impacting resident's quality of life. The objective of this project is to fortify the community's input to guide the administration's support of sustainable economic development and architectural preservation. A community driven organization named the Samoreang Preservation Group - SPG was created to produce a database of the region's historical roots with its architectural and socio-cultural assets. The project resulted …

Complicated Lives: Free Blacks In Virginia, 1619-1865, Sherri L. Burr Jul 2019

Complicated Lives: Free Blacks In Virginia, 1619-1865, Sherri L. Burr

Faculty Book Display Case

Would the United States have developed differently if Virginia had not passed a law in 1670 proclaiming all subsequently arriving Africans as servants for life, or slaves? What if the state had not stripped all Free Blacks and Indians of voting rights in 1723, or outlawed interracial sex for 337 years?

Complicated Lives upends the pervasive belief that all Africans landing on the shores of Virginia beginning in late August 1619, became slaves. In reality, many of these kidnap victims received the status of indentured servants. Indeed, hundreds of thousands of free African Americans in the South and North owned …

Twenty-First Century Noir: From Stieg Larsson’S Trilogy To Dolores Redondo’S Trilogy And Eva García Sáenz De Urturi’S Trilogy, Salvador Oropesa Jul 2019

Twenty-First Century Noir: From Stieg Larsson’S Trilogy To Dolores Redondo’S Trilogy And Eva García Sáenz De Urturi’S Trilogy, Salvador Oropesa

Publications

Stieg Larsson’s Millenium Trilogy has influenced twenty-first century Spanish noir, especially Dolores Redondo’s Baztán Trilogy and Eva García Sáenz de Urturi’s White City Trilogies. Larsson’s novels put mysoginy and its violent consequences at the center of noir and provided the development of constitutional rights as the solution to the problem. Following the logic of Western literature, all these texts use myths to make sense of modern problems. Pre-Christian mythology is presented as the root of contemporary evil acts. The novels warn their readers that the return to an ahistorical past and magic brings abomination and inordinate pain. In the …

Community Involvement And Leadership In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska: Rural Poll Research Report 19-1, Rebecca Vogt, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Randolph Cantrell, Bradley Lubben, L. J. Mcelravy, Timothy Meyer, Jason L. Weigle Jul 2019

Community Involvement And Leadership In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska: Rural Poll Research Report 19-1, Rebecca Vogt, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Randolph Cantrell, Bradley Lubben, L. J. Mcelravy, Timothy Meyer, Jason L. Weigle

Rural Futures Institute: Publications

Community leadership and involvement are important parts of community development. Rural communities rely on volunteers for many community development activities as well as local leadership positions. In smaller communities in particular, community members often take on multiple roles. Given these challenges, how involved are rural Nebraskans in community and political activities? How do they feel about the leadership in their community? How often do they have social interactions with others during a typical month? This paper provides a detailed analysis of these questions. This report details 1,776 responses to the 2019 Nebraska Rural Poll, the 24th annual effort to understand …

The Role Of Refugee Women Narratives In The U.S. Resettlement Process, Alys Sink Jul 2019

The Role Of Refugee Women Narratives In The U.S. Resettlement Process, Alys Sink

VA Engage Journal

Within resettlement scholarship, there exists a distinct absence of direct narratives by refugee women about their resettlement experiences within the United States. This study delves into this absence of voice, investigating the ways in which refugee women’s narratives are received and utilized within a refugee resettlement agency. This ethnographic study includes independent interviews with refugee women and resettlement staff. Utilizing Ernest Stringer’s method of action research and Cheryl Glenn’s Rhetoric of Silence, I argue that refugee women’s narratives are not wholly absent or silent, but rather that they are rarely acknowledged, often devalued, or inadvertently made a non-priority within larger …

The Embodied Language Of Sasha Sokolov's "A School For Fools", José Vergara Jul 2019

The Embodied Language Of Sasha Sokolov's "A School For Fools", José Vergara

Russian Faculty Works

The present article investigates the tension between speech/thought and writing present in Sasha Sokolov's first novel, Shkola dlia durakov (A School for Fools). It maintains that the critical tendency to view the hero's narrative as an unstructured, unnatural speech or thought act tends to exaggerate its deviancy and obscures its peculiar status as a frenzied transcription of his ideas. As the first half of the article demonstrates, Sokolov uses visual markers inherent to a written text alone, along with readerly habits, to craft his tale about thought materializing on the page in concrete form. Furthermore, Sokolov deploys related body imagery …

Imitation And Creation: Bing Xin’S Fanxing (A Maze Of Stars) 繁星And Chunshui (Spring Water) 春水, Xiaoqing Liu

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Fanxing (A Maze of Stars) and Chunshui (Spring Water) are two poetry collections of modern Chinese woman writer Bing Xin (1900–1999). Because they stand at the beginning of a new genre, xiaoshi (short poetry), and are commonly regarded as representative works of this genre, people use the epithets “Bing Xin style,” “Fanxing style,” or “Chunshui style” to refer to xiaoshi writing. Nevertheless, viewed from their intimate relationship with Rabindranath Tagore’s Stray Birds, I argue that Fanxing and Chunshui are products of both imitation and creation. Imitation is not plagiarism. Dryden defines imitation as a form …

Belle La Follette’S Fight For Women’S Suffrage: Losing The Battle For Wisconsin, Winning The War For The Nation, Nancy C. Unger

History

A century ago, on May 21, 1919, the US House of Representatives voted difinitively (304 to 89) in support of women’s suffrage. Two weeks later, Wisconsinite Belle La Follette sat in the visitors’ gallery of the US Senate chamber. She “shed a few tears” when it was announced that, by a vote of 56 to 25, the US Senate also approved the Nineteenth Amendment, sending it on to the states for ratification.1 For Belle La Follette, this thrilling victory was the culmination of a decades-long fight. Six days later, her happiness turned to elation when Wisconsin became the first …

An Analysis Of The Compositional Technique And Structures Of Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 1 In E Minor, Op. 22 “Nordic”, Eunseok Seo Jul 2019

An Analysis Of The Compositional Technique And Structures Of Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 1 In E Minor, Op. 22 “Nordic”, Eunseok Seo

Theses and Dissertations

Howard Hanson was the first American composer who attained international prominence in the early 20th century. During his time as conductor and director of the Eastman School of Music, he was perhaps one of the greatest promoters of modern musical expression and avant-garde performance techniques. However, Hanson was a composer who preferred composing in a traditional style, and his compositional style was faithful to nuanced Romantic expression and a Classical structure. Hanson’s music career ebbed and flowed with contrasting periods of struggle and success. His music was enormously popular during the 1930s and 40s but quickly entered a period of …

Racial Disparities In The United States Criminal Justice System: “With Liberty And Justice For All?”, Remi Alapo, David Rockefeller Jul 2019

Racial Disparities In The United States Criminal Justice System: “With Liberty And Justice For All?”, Remi Alapo, David Rockefeller

Publications and Research

Racial discrimination remains a prevalent issue in the contemporary U.S. despite efforts to promote equality. Many young African American and Hispanic males are easy target for law enforcement agents. Minorities experience a higher and more unfair form of racial discrimination, racial profiling, police brutality, unfair sentencing, and mass incarceration for offences which are the same or less than those committed by White males. The rate of incarceration in the United States is five to eight times higher than most developed countries, and Black males constitute the largest percentage of inmates in the U.S. prison system. Once arrested, Black Americans are …

Things Cis People Say: Mechanisms Of Moral Disengagement In The Justification Of Anti-Queer Communication, Jonathan M. Sahlman Jul 2019

Things Cis People Say: Mechanisms Of Moral Disengagement In The Justification Of Anti-Queer Communication, Jonathan M. Sahlman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Despite advances gained by LGBTQIA+ people the issue of discrimination against the queer population continues. Recent events surrounding comments made by alt-right leaders have continued the conversation regarding homophobia and transphobia. The followed study built on previous understandings of moral disengagement theory and communication. 15 semi-structured, in-depth interviews with queer students were conducted in order to explore the role of self-cognitive mechanisms and their potential justifications for anti-queer communication. Findings suggested that not only were mechanisms of moral disengagement present in incidents surrounding anti-queer communication, but the carried with them a range of personal and societal implications. This study offered …

Continuous And Integrated Urban Preservation: With Emphasis On Culture And Tourism - Case Study Of Arnaia, Nataša Danilovic Hristic, Nebojša Stefanovic

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Plans and projects of restoration of cultural and historical heritage if implemented in systematic way, as in an integrated manner applied consistently overtime with long term objectives, can contribute to both architectural preservation and increases in attractiveness to new visitors. The culture and tourism's industry are significant parts of the economy and settlements have a chance to highlight their potential in particular regarding identity, history or their healthy environment along with possibilities for relaxation and entertainment. This is a way to combine traditional and inherited forms of the environment with the conditions of contemporary life and its demands. In this …

A College’S Impact On The Air War Of Wwii, Cannon Marchand Jul 2019

A College’S Impact On The Air War Of Wwii, Cannon Marchand

Undergraduate Research Journal

World War II, for the United States, relied on men from every background and experience to fill the ranks and complete the necessary tasks towards eventual victory. A diverse nation with a diverse populous was required to be trained and made uniform into the military in a short period of time. The whole of American society and institutions had to adapt to support the war effort and the men fighting. Colleges across the country would also find manners in which to help win the war. An example of a college that changed to help students become soldiers is the Nebraska …

The History Of The Name Of The Savior’S Church, K, Shane Goodwin Jul 2019

The History Of The Name Of The Savior’S Church, K, Shane Goodwin

BYU Studies

Few periods in our Church history were more fraught with trial and tension than late 1837 and early 1838. There was a warrant for Joseph Smith’s arrest in Kirtland, Ohio, due to practices related to the Kirtland Safety Society. Key leaders were dissenting and questioning Joseph’s fitness to remain their prophet and president, leading to the painful release and later excommunication of top leadership in Missouri. An ever-tightening grip of poverty and indebtedness plagued the Saints, many of whom were beginning to migrate into Caldwell and Daviess Counties.

Naturalistic Explanations Of The Origin Of The Book Of Mormon, Brian C. Hales Jul 2019

Naturalistic Explanations Of The Origin Of The Book Of Mormon, Brian C. Hales

BYU Studies

In early 1830, an unknown farmer in upstate New York burst upon the world’s book-publishing scene. The Book of Mormon rolled off the Grandin Press in Palmyra, New York, with Joseph Smith listed as “author and proprietor” on the title page. That same year, a few other authors produced new titles, including The Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck by Mary Shelley, Letters and Journals of Lord Byron by Thomas Moore, and Six Sermons on the Study of the Holy Scriptures by Samuel Lee. If grouped with books classified as “fiction” in 1830, the Book of Mormon may have been the longest, …

Alexander Campbell And Joseph Smith: Nineteenth-Century Restorationists, Alison Palmer

BYU Studies

RoseAnn Benson’s latest book, Alexander Campbell and Joseph Smith, examines and compares two of the most prominent restorationist leaders in nineteenth-century America. On this subject, Latter-day Saints are likely most familiar with the conflict between the two men and their movements. Early Latter-day Saint Sidney Rigdon, for instance, was one of several individuals who defected from Campbell’s Disciples of Christ and joined what became The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. And Campbell later published a treatise, “Delusions,” against Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon. Though these facts are relatively well known among Latter-day Saints, that story …

“As Far As It Is Translated Correctly”: Bible Translation And The Church, Daniel O. Mcclellan

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

The publication of Thomas A. Wayment’s The New Testament: A Translation for Latter-day Saintsis a significant event that occasions not only a close examination of his work but also a discussion of how it fits into the complex relationship The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has long shared with Bible translation.1 If the Book of Mormon is the keystone of our religion, the King James Version of the Bible is certainly its linguistic cornerstone. The scripture and other revelations that flowed from the Prophet Joseph Smith and his successors in the early days of the Church were …
