Peter As A Learner And Teacher, John Hilton Iii Jul 2019

Peter As A Learner And Teacher, John Hilton Iii

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Over a century ago, biblical scholar Phillip Shaff wrote, “Generally speaking, the character of Peter is described with essential harmony in all the Gospels. He appears as an admirable type of the Galilean: well-meaning, confiding, freedom-loving, and courageous, yet changeable, capricious, and eager for novelty.” Indeed, as Markus Bockmuehl points out, “Peter is, after Jesus, the most frequently mentioned individual both in the Gospels and in the New Testament as a whole.” Peter’s enthusiasm and forward nature can be seen throughout the four Gospels in the manner in which he speaks for the disciples and at times acts impetuously (for …

The Nauvoo Music And Concert Hall, Darrell Babidge Jul 2019

The Nauvoo Music And Concert Hall, Darrell Babidge

BYU Studies

On many an evening in 1845, anyone near the corner of Woodruff and Young Streets in Nauvoo, Illinois, would have heard music coming from the newly constructed Music and Concert Hall (fig. 1). The following year, the music making abruptly stopped as thousands of Nauvoo residents fled from mob violence, abandoned the city, and began their journey westward to the Great Salt Lake. Today on the same corner is an empty grassy area where children often play. This article seeks to tell the history of the Nauvoo Music and Concert Hall. This hall points to the lifeblood of music and …

Elder Steven E. Snow served as the Church Historian and Recorder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from August 1, 2012, to July 31, 2019. During this time, he oversaw significant developments in the work of Church history, from record keeping to publishing to developing historic sites and exhibits. Two years into his tenure, I joined the Church History Department as director of the Church History Library. One of my assignments in this role eventually involved participating in ongoing discussions about the office of Church Recorder. Over the years, there had been much discussion about the role …

Burning The Couch: Some Stories Of Grace, Robbie Taggart Jul 2019

Burning The Couch: Some Stories Of Grace, Robbie Taggart

BYU Studies

One day when I was a snarling baffled holy teenager, four friends and I found a lonely-looking couch on the side of the road. It had a sign on it that said, “Free.” Our minds immediately began to scroll through the brilliant possibilities presented by such a couch, such a gift. Someone thought we could hike it to our favorite camping spot up the mountain and sit upon it amid the trees and weeds and clouds and birdsong and rejoice in the incongruity of it all. But the thought of mountain snails and mildew sharing our couch led us in …

Salt Lake School Of The Prophets, Hannah Charlesworth Jul 2019

Salt Lake School Of The Prophets, Hannah Charlesworth

BYU Studies

In 1833, Joseph Smith established the first School of the Prophets in Kirtland, Ohio. The school was a place where men in the Church of Christ, founded by Smith in 1830, met to learn about spiritual and secular matters and to prepare for missionary work. During these meetings, Joseph Smith saw many visions and received revelation. The Kirtland school ended in 1837, but thirty years later, Brigham Young revived the School of the Prophets in Utah. This school was called the Salt Lake School of the Prophets and is the main subject of Devery Anderson’s new book Salt Lake School …

Lostness, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer Jul 2019

Lostness, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer

Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, I argue that lostness is the life of wonder and that it carries the weight of human striving as understood in the neo-Aristotelian tradition exemplified by philosophers such as Martha Nussbaum and Michael Thompson. Being lost in wonder is an especially important part of human dynamism without which our excellence, or virtue, cannot be grasped. I explore the first part of this argument in some detail and situate it within the wider question I am pursuing about a politics of wonder in conditions of dissensus. Overall, I seek a revised understanding of democracy as collective capacity grounded …

Democratizing Knowledge: Using Wikipedia For Inclusive Teaching And Research In Four Undergraduate Classes, Angela L. Pratesi, Wendy Miller, Elizabeth Sutton

Faculty Work

In preparation for the spring 2018 semester, the three of us came together to develop a Wikipedia-based project using feminist pedagogies in their teaching practice. With different assignments, students in the four courses collaborated in this effort to improve the diversity, breadth, and quality of information in the free encyclopedia in English. Moreover, the assignments challenged students' research and information literacy skills via an authentic learning experience, specifically editing Wikipedia on art- and diversity-related topics while engaging with the Wikipedia community and teaching other students how to edit Wikipedia on underrepresented topics--the “social responsibility of a collective struggle” for inclusion …

Performando Un Activismo Feminista: El Trabajo De Debora Kuetzpal Vasquez En La Marca, Patricia Herrera, Mariela Méndez Jul 2019

Performando Un Activismo Feminista: El Trabajo De Debora Kuetzpal Vasquez En La Marca, Patricia Herrera, Mariela Méndez

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Cualquier paradigma identitario a …

Mitigating Decline Of Church Growth Resulting From Misunderstanding Of Selected Messianic Passages In Psalms And Isaiah, Hiwatha Bell Jul 2019

Mitigating Decline Of Church Growth Resulting From Misunderstanding Of Selected Messianic Passages In Psalms And Isaiah, Hiwatha Bell

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Paul admonishes the leaders in Ephesus to guard the flock whom God gave them oversight, to develop their spiritual insight by advancing their Scriptural aptitude so they would be able to withstand opposing forces outside the church as well as threats that would emerge from inside the church (Acts 20:28-30). Christ often engaged religious leaders in Judaism, accusing them of evangelizing to others (Matt. 23:15) and misleading those whom they had evangelized and proselytized (Matt. 15:1-13). The Bible is replete with Scriptures that require the shepherd to protect the sheep from wolves, thus the impetus for this report. This report …

Explaining The Vampire Legend Through Disease, Cydney J. Christner Jul 2019

Explaining The Vampire Legend Through Disease, Cydney J. Christner

Undergraduate Research Journal

Vampires have continually been depicted in literary and cinematic works as pale, undead human beings that consume the blood of the living .4,7,19 Evidence that vampires were a part of culture before they grew in fiction has been observed in ancient burial rituals known as apotropaic observances, which consisted of practices to prevent evil.8 Excavation of a cemetery in Poland dated between the 17th and 18th centuries uncovered several abnormal burials in which apotropaic practices were used. These burials included sickles placed over the neck or abdomen of the deceased, large stones placed under the chin …

Anna May Wong: Chinese-American Actress, Katherine Anielak

Undergraduate Research Journal

The United States’ film industry has an extensive and rich history that also offers insight into the development of American culture. However, the history of Hollywood includes many cases of discrimination, racism, and the use of stereotypes within roles. Films reflect societal constructs and beliefs, including stereotypes that European Americans had against non-white immigrants and citizens. Asian-Americans especially suffered from stereotypes and discrimination within the United States in the early 20th Century. Such stereotypes and racism appeared in both the films produced in Hollywood, and within Hollywood and the film industry itself. Anna May Wong, the first Chinese-American film actress, …

The Evolution Of Firefighter Funeral Ritual, Kylie Johnson Jul 2019

The Evolution Of Firefighter Funeral Ritual, Kylie Johnson

Undergraduate Research Journal

The American Fire System has a rich history that has been shaped by a number of American subcultures. Traditions that were influenced by its origins on the east coast spread across the country, creating a unique community that has maintained its rituals despite influences from the various regions across the country. One such ritual that has been consistent even as the fire system changes cultural hands is the firefighter funeral. Due to the private insider nature of the firefighter community, the firefighter funeral is one of the few rituals that can be experienced by outsiders. The consistency of this ritual …

Norfolk Regional Center Cemeteries: Attempts To Honor Those Who Were Forgotten, Tatiana Moore Jul 2019

Norfolk Regional Center Cemeteries: Attempts To Honor Those Who Were Forgotten, Tatiana Moore

Undergraduate Research Journal

Commemoration serves as an important element of American culture. Memorializing heroes and the sacrifices they made has a certain sacredness for most people. Remembering a relative for who they were and all they did shows the respect people hold for their lost loved ones. However, there was a rather long period in American history where people were intentionally forgotten. Asylums were the destinations for those considered less-desirable, strange, or just plain weird by society; they were the homes for the unwanted. Nebraska had three asylums, and only in recent years have efforts been made to remember those who were forgotten …
