Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
Twenty years ago, the first account of the emerging transnational scope of the Maya, The Maya Diaspora: Guatemalan Roots, New American Lives (2000), focused on the roots and emerging realities of Maya migration. Much has changed in a short time. While lives and identities continue to involve intergenerational connections to the south, they are also increasingly ones that reflect an intersection of indigenous, intercultural, and transnational experiences. Ultimately, it is hoped that Maya America will serve to reveal how greatly interconnected are the Americas, through processes of social and cultural evolution, history, and demography, and through assertions of rights of …

Mi Semestre Con La Experiencia Inmigrante: Todos Podríamos Aprender Un Poco, Rachel C. Ziemba

Desviaciones Disfrutadas Y Pasiones Visualizadas: Demonios En La Piel: La Pasión Según Pasolini, Gail A. Bulman
Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

For hundreds of years, Ona and her people have been unknowingly enslaved. Ona has given everything she is to the spiritual people on the mountain, including her own son. So when rumors spread through the swamp’s magical mycelium that she and her people are slaves, Ona must find the truth and, if possible, reunite with her son before he becomes as evil as those who raised him. Meanwhile, her son has his own doubts after his people leave his friend to die. As he and Ona journey separately to save the people they love, they find everything they believed to …
Thinking With Adorno [Table Of Contents], Gerhard Richter
Thinking With Adorno [Table Of Contents], Gerhard Richter
Philosophy & Theory
What Theodor W. Adorno says cannot be separated from how he says it, and what he thinks cannot be isolated from how he thinks it. Richter’s book teaches us to think with Adorno—both alongside him and in relation to his diverse contexts and constellations, from aesthetic theory to political critique, from the problem of judgment to the question of how to lead a right life within a wrong one.
Thinking with Adorno’s uncoercive gaze not only means following the fascinating paths of his own work; it also means extending hospitality to the ghostly voices of others. As this book shows, …
The Reproduction Of Life Death [Table Of Contents], Dawne Mccance
The Reproduction Of Life Death [Table Of Contents], Dawne Mccance
Philosophy & Theory
Based on archival translations of a soon-to-be-published seminar by Jacques Derrida, The Reproduction of Life Death offers an unprecedented study of Derrida’s engagement with molecular biology and genetics. McCance shows how Derrida ties biological accounts of reproduction to the reproductive program of teaching, challenging an auto-reproductive notion of pedagogy, while also reinterpreting the work of psychoanalysis.
Structured as an itinerary of “three rings,” each departing from and coming back to Nietzsche, Derrida’s seminar ties Jacob’s logocentric account of reproduction to the reproductive program of teaching that characterizes the academic institution, challenging this mode of teaching as auto-reproduction along with the …

Men's Time: Pavel Fedotov And The Pressures Of Mid-Nineteenth-Century Masculinity, Allison Leigh
Department of Visual Arts
For seven weeks in the spring of 1835, the Russian painter Pavel Fedotov kept a journal. He was, in these months, still an officer serving in the Finland Regiment of the Imperial Guards in St. Petersburg, but he was ultimately to become known as Russia’s most celebrated early realist painter. The journal preserves in unusual depth of detail the monotony and perpetual sameness which characterized life for the nineteen-year old officer as he grew his painterly skill. Examining it, along with a small cluster of the artist’s paintings and drawings, shows that the repetitiousness found in the journal also characterized …

A Focus On Singapore's 21st-Century Landscape, Darren Soh
Social Space
Singapore has one of the world’s most rapidly changing urban landscapes, so it is impossible to conserve every single building. However, we can document these structures and spaces before the wrecking ball hits. That is what I aim to do through architectural photography.
There are many photographers in the world but not everyone sees the world through the same lens. To capture an impactful image, we don’t necessarily have to use a fancy camera—sometimes, the best machine is the one we have at the moment. Often, that is our smartphone.

Critically Assessing Forms Of Resistance In Music Education, Brent C. Talbot, Hakim Mohandas Amani Williams
Critically Assessing Forms Of Resistance In Music Education, Brent C. Talbot, Hakim Mohandas Amani Williams
Education Faculty Publications
In their classrooms, music educators draw upon critical pedagogy (as described by Freire, Giroux, and hooks) for the express purpose of cultivating a climate for conscientização. Conscientização, according to Paulo Freire (2006), “refers to learning to perceive social, political, and economic contradictions and to take action against the oppressive elements of reality” (p. 35). This consciousness raising is a journey teachers pursue with students, together interrogating injustices in communities and the world in order to transform the conditions that inform them. Learning to perceive social, political, and economic contradictions often leads to multiple forms of resistance in and …

This little booklet is an extension of the Martin portion of a book that I self-published in late 2014 entitled The Pioneer Williams Families of Smith Township, Posey County, Indiana and their Allen, Cater, Davis, Harmon, Johnson/Johnston, Journey, Lowe, Martin, Prewitt/Pruitt and Rook Connections.1 It contains by far the most detailed published account of Elder James Martin’s life and family. This new work has been created to document additional facts and sources related to the lives of Elder James Martin and his brother Simon.
Elder James Martin is very unique among people of his era, in that he left a …

State Formation In Greece: Iklaina And The Unification Of Mycenaean Pylos, Michael B. Cosmopoulos
Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works
For a long time, the emergence of Aegean states was explained in terms of general evolutionist models based on evidence from a handful of major palatial sites. Recently, however, a growing emphasis on regional diversity has demonstrated the importance of specific models for understanding the multiple pathways to social complexity. It is becoming increasingly clear that static neoevolutionary types do not reflect the fluid and dynamic character of human societies and that top-down explanatory models based on top-tier centers are biased and incomplete. In this article, a detailed historical modeling of the Mycenaean state of Pylos based on new data …

The Sad Kitchen And Song Of Neon: Two Novellas, John Paul King
The Sad Kitchen And Song Of Neon: Two Novellas, John Paul King
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The Sad Kitchen, a work of magical realism, tells the story of a saintly woman named Helen. She opens an underground kitchen where people who feel guilty can come to be comforted and nurtured in the middle of the night. The story is, at its heart, a reflection on forgiveness. Song of Neon, also of the magical realist genre, is an existential work about a nurse named Avery and her husband, an owl house maker, named Saul. Their town, Milliard, is under a trance. Avery and Saul struggle with their respective identities in the quiet, vacuum the town has become.
