Mapping Mrs. Dolloway, Adriane Little
Mapping Mrs. Dolloway, Adriane Little
Faculty Research and Creative Activities Award (FRACAA)
Project Description
Literature is riddled with dead or otherwise missing mothers. Virginia Woolf's life and writing were partly, yet significantly guided by the death of her mother when Woolf was just 13 years-old. This loss reappears across her novels. As an artist, I am interested in studying both her writing and her as a woman who experienced this early and profound loss. Conceptually, this work is supported by continued research to advance the trope of the missing mother. Mapping Mrs. Dalloway represents a new way of visualizing text and image within my practice by incorporating data mapping in this new …

2017-2018 Women Innovators in the Performing Arts
“M”is the most common sound in the word for “mother” in languages all over the world. In this stunning tribute to motherhood, contemporary dance, set to baroque music, probes its joys and sorrows. While pregnant with her third child, emerging Israeli choreographer Inbal Oshman found inspiration in Pergolesi’s version of Stabat Mater, the 13th-century hymn about Mary’s vigil at the foot of the cross. Oshman’s dance explores the vulnerability and tenderness required of mothers, and the strength and ferocity that come with the territory. She borrows from the mythological mothers of history, including the Mary of Christianity, the dark and …

The Heart Of K'É: Transforming Diné Special Education And Unsettling The Colonial Logics Of Disability, Sandra Yellowhorse
The Heart Of K'É: Transforming Diné Special Education And Unsettling The Colonial Logics Of Disability, Sandra Yellowhorse
American Studies ETDs
This paper takes up the roles of ideology and spatiality as they impact Diné students and learners in understanding conceptions of normativity, neuro-diversity and bodily variance. I am concerned with how the movement and creation of Indigenous schools and their praxis still maintain and often times produce settler colonial ideologies of being, personhood, difference and ability. I illustrate the challenges that Diné planners and educators face in entrenching cultural knowledge and language into their educational initiatives, while some of the problematic manifestations and expressions of normativity present themselves through state polices, federal law and mainstream curriculum.
I focus on the …

"Song Is The Simple Rhythmic Liberation Of An Emotion": Stephen Dedalus' Musical Martyrdom, Colleen E. Mulhern
"Song Is The Simple Rhythmic Liberation Of An Emotion": Stephen Dedalus' Musical Martyrdom, Colleen E. Mulhern
The Criterion
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, published in 1916, is Joyce’s semi-autobiographical bildungsroman centered on Stephen Dedalus’ struggle to reconcile Catholic teachings with his own artistic ambitions. In Portrait, music aids Stephen’s epiphanies. Stephen uses music to express emotions unable to be conceived of in – what Joyce calls –“cut-and-dry language.” He appreciates the ability of songs to arouse emotion and induce thought; the songs that Stephen encounters help to form his identity, first as a martyr and, later, as a creator.

Praise And Prejudice: American Attitudes Toward Japan In Uncle Ben, Anna Nielsen, Rachel Baron, Emily Orton
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
Uncle Ben in Japan is a 1933 geographical workbook intended to teach American schoolchildren about Japan. This text highlights both positive and negative American attitudes towards Japan in the 1930s. Although this work expresses certain views progressive for its time, it also contains evident assumptions of American national superiority.
Platonic And Confucian Theories On Music-Parallels And Differences, Christian Moreno
Platonic And Confucian Theories On Music-Parallels And Differences, Christian Moreno
Honors Thesis
Music has always been an important part of humanity, and with the advent of the Axial Age, the period between the 8th and 3rd centuries BC where new ways of thinking emerged in a wide range of cultures, two of humanity’s greatest thinkers in Plato and Confucius, would apply their thoughts and theories to music. By examining their opinions of music in their written texts, especially Confucius’ Analects and Plato’s Republic, as well as modern scholarship on the subject like the work of philosopher Mark Muesse, one can gain an insight into the general thinking of these …

Making Of Nationalistic Dance: Agrippina Vaganova And Choi Seung-Hee, Angela Kim
Making Of Nationalistic Dance: Agrippina Vaganova And Choi Seung-Hee, Angela Kim
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
This thesis applies nationalism theories from Eric Hobsbawm's Inventing Tradition and Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities to show how Agrippina Vaganova and Choi Seung-hee's dances became their nation's representative dance forms. Agrippina Vaganova's Modern Russian Ballet and Choi Seung-hee's Sinmuyong (New Dance) made significant impacts in their respective countries in the twentieth century by each becoming a systematic dance form that became synonymous with the nation. This thesis argues that Agrippina Vaganova's Modern Russian Ballet and Choi Seung-hee's Sinmuyong (New Dance) became their nation's representative dance forms due to interactions between performance, social changes, and discourses of media. These, along with …

1942 - Aboriginal Navigation Off The Coasts Of Upper And Baja California, Bulletin 151, Anthropological Papers, No. 39, Robert F. Heizer And William C. Massey
Government Documents and Publications
This 1942 Bureau of American Ethnology report discusses the differences in coastal topography and the particular types of boats used in the local environments: Tule balsas, log dugouts, log rafts and plank canoes. The Pacific coast, from the Oregon-California boundary to the southern tip of Baja California stretches about 1,600 miles and embraces some nineteen degrees of latitude. Environmentally this long coastal area can be divided into separate provinces that influenced the type of boats used for navigation by the aboriginals.
So Not Mothers: Responsibility For Surrogate Orphans, Jennifer Parks, Timothy F. Murphy
So Not Mothers: Responsibility For Surrogate Orphans, Jennifer Parks, Timothy F. Murphy
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The law ordinarily recognizes the woman who gives birth as the mother of a child, but in certain jurisdictions, it will recognize the commissioning couple as the legal parents of a child born to a commercial surrogate. Some commissioning parents have, however, effectively abandoned the children they commission, and in such cases commercial surrogates may find themselves facing unexpected maternal responsibility for children they had fully intended to give up. Any assumption that commercial surrogates ought to assume maternal responsibility for abandoned children runs contrary to the moral suppositions that typically govern contract surrogacy, in particular assumptions that gestational carriers …

How Do Chinese Dialects Reflect The Way In Which Chinese Immigrants Settled In The United States?, Tom Yang
How Do Chinese Dialects Reflect The Way In Which Chinese Immigrants Settled In The United States?, Tom Yang
Asian & Asian American Studies Student Research Symposium
As the world’s largest ethnic group, Han Chinese constitute approximately 92% of the population of China and near 20% of the population of the word. With so many people distributed in a vast area, there are several dialect groups which are closely related to the hometown of the different speakers. The Mandarin in northern China can be quite easily understood by most Chinese citizens, since it’s not much different from Putonghua, the Modern Standard Mandarin. While the languages spoken in southern China, especially the Wu, Min, Hakka, and Yue, may sound like foreign languages to those different dialect groups users. …

The Impact Of Korean Churches On The Korean American Community In Flushing, New York, Remy Moon
Asian & Asian American Studies Student Research Symposium
As of 2010, the Korean population living in Queens, NY was 64,107 (US Census). A majority of these Koreans live in Flushing, NY, which is also known as New York City’s Koreatown. A key characteristic of the Korean American community is the importance of the Korean church. Not only does it serve as a place of worship, but it also serves as a community center. Korean churches provide Korean language classes, Pre-K classes, visa workshops, opportunities to go on missionary trips, and meals for the elderly. While this seems like an ordinary occurrence, the Flushing area stands out in one …

This narrative provides a powerful feminist aspect in terms of the struggles and successes of being an independent female tattoo artist in the thriving hub of Osu-‐Kannon, Nagoya. This narrative also tackles the issue of the recent developments facing tattooing that seek to threaten artists such as Uri and seeks to drive them underground. I can find no website that offers such insight as this narrative provides or offers a thorough compilation of the culture of tattooing in Japan and the challenges foreign tourists might face -‐ much less in English. Perception Of Sex Education And Menstruation Among Asian American Communities, Ivy Lin Wu
Asian & Asian American Studies Student Research Symposium
The purpose of this research is to gather information about sex education (in particular, menarche) in Asian American communities. Sex education and the materials taught varies throughout the world. I am curious with the depth in which certain topics are explored, and our personal experiences with sex education outside the classroom, particularly amongst Asian American girls.
