Stage Managing The Glass Menagerie By Tennessee Williams, Makeya Royer

17th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Performance (2018)

The stage manager is a role that requires organizational skills, composure, and confidence to help a production run smoothly. In February of 2018, Hope College put The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams, on their stage. I accepted the role of stage manager and began my work immediately. My job was to organize and lead production meetings, run rehearsals, gather and share information, and keep everyone involved in the process updated and informed. This project will show stage management documentation of The Glass Menagerie from the beginning of the production to the end.

Painting A Unique Perspective About Violence In Contemporary Visual Arts, Catherine Gallagher Apr 2018

Painting A Unique Perspective About Violence In Contemporary Visual Arts, Catherine Gallagher

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

My Distinction Thesis essay considers how the bodies of works of contemporary visual artists Judy Chicago, Marc Quinn, Kara Walker, and myself could be considered violent and/or graphic. Each artist works in a different medium, bringing their own unique perspective to these illustrations. When analyzing these artists, I found it imperative to consider the aestheticization of violent visual art, and how these artists challenge our traditional idea of what ‘fine art’ is. Particularly, what draws the viewer to look at this art and consider it beautiful or ugly? Also, having a clear definition of what violent and/or graphic art is …

The Female Body As A Commodity, Soon Wai Yee Apr 2018

The Female Body As A Commodity, Soon Wai Yee

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

How does fighting for gender equality further contributes to sufferings and injustices of a smaller population? Does gender equality alleviate injustices? In my thesis, I argue that gender equality is contentious and equality only applies to a population of people who meets certain social criteria i.e. class, wealth, fair/white race, and education level. Gender equality contributes to the commodification of the female body in both the public and private spheres for different purposes. A capitalist society commodifies the female body for her exchange-value to satisfy the insatiable needs of a capitalistic patriarchy.

Women Near Tv's White House: Power, Gender, And Race On Us Narrative Television, Teresa Caprioglio Apr 2018

Women Near Tv's White House: Power, Gender, And Race On Us Narrative Television, Teresa Caprioglio

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

CBS’s drama Madam Secretary, USA’s miniseries Political Animals, and ABC’s drama Scandal all debuted between 2012-14, each with a female protagonist working closely with the executive branch in Washington-based political circles. Each displays, however, a different engagement with political activity and its relationship to personal life and relationships and to personal identity and presentation. By examining the configurations of gender and power in Madam Secretary and Political Animals, both of which portray female Secretaries of State, this thesis addresses the visual and behavioral expectations for TV women’s access to power and visibility as women and political actors, …

Creating A Textile Museum Exhibit: Conservation And Accessibility, Kelly M. Lorenz

Honors Theses

This twofold study engages a collection of early-to-mid-20th century Levantine textiles held by the Institute of Archaeology and Siegfried H. Horn Museum. The first part of the study involves identifying the risks of physical deterioration posed to the collection and then providing a proposal for the storage and display of these artifacts. Keeping the museum's means in mind, the storage plan emphasizes preventive conservation, focusing on minimizing risks wherever possible to keep damage from happening in the first place. The second part provides written interpretive material for the display that informs visitors of the textiles' geographic, physical, and cultural origins.

Iago As Moral Other In Jonathan Munby's Production Of Othello (2016), Emma Magbanua Apr 2018

Iago As Moral Other In Jonathan Munby's Production Of Othello (2016), Emma Magbanua

Honors Theses

Jonathan Munby produced a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in Spring of 2016. While continuing to utilize Shakespeare's language, Munby modernized Othello through the use of contemporary military costumes, props, accents, music, and dance. Munby did not limit his adaptation to solely visual and auditory aspects of Othello, but also took the liberty of contemporizing the principle of "otherness" in the play. This research explores the identification of Munby's character as Iago as "Moral Other," whose actions lead to the fall of his wife, Emilia, a fellow officer, Roderigo, Desdemona, and the protagonist, Othello.

Poetry Of Spiritual Experience, Victoria Horn Apr 2018

Poetry Of Spiritual Experience, Victoria Horn

Celebration of Research

The process of writing poetry, especially poetry with a spiritual focus, is far from cut-and-dry, but there are a few particular research elements that have helped me gain my footing in writing spiritually-focused poetry. Firstly, as you will see on the left, reading essays on poetics from the likes of Mary Karr and Don McKay—both of whom approach their own writing as avid readers of other poets—has taught me to give myself the time and space to reflect deeply on the possible ways poetry can reach out and touch experiences, specifically spiritual experiences, that are beyond language. Secondly, as you …

Limited Atonement In 1 John 2:2, Steven Clark Apr 2018

Limited Atonement In 1 John 2:2, Steven Clark

Celebration of Research

Atonement, the theological issue dealing with the precise nature of Christ’s work, is a central doctrine to the Christian faith and yet it is one which historically has not always achieved consensus among theologians. This problem becomes more complicated when we entertain the possibility that different biblical authors may have had competing understandings even within the New Testament canon. This project explores what might happen if we were to interpret 1 John 2:2’s idea of Jesus as an atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world in light of Rudolf Bultmann’s basic thesis about the Gospel of John’s view …

The Theatre Of Ambiguity, Hannah Wamhoff Apr 2018

The Theatre Of Ambiguity, Hannah Wamhoff

Celebration of Research

The increased diversity of beliefs surrounding the definition of gender identity and gender roles has enhanced the need for research on historical societies' beliefs and practices. By examining the private and professional theatre of Elizabethan England through contemporary scholarship, primary sources, and plays of the time, I found a contrast between companies comprised entirely of boys and those comprised of adult men. Boy players were able to play female and male characters across a wide age range. My analysis shows that the Elizabethan society's acceptance of this theatrical convention depended upon the widespread view of adolescents as ambiguous in age …

The Process Of Professional Translation, Veronica Chavez, Sophia Holt, Suresh Portillo, Alejandra Pulgarin, Makayla Tjernagel

Celebration of Research

The process of translating this dental document for a local children’s dentist’s clinic in Sioux Center is time-consuming and very researched-based. The critical element of this research involves researching specific dental and medical terms from Spanish-speaking sources, be it dental offices in Latin America and Spain or from professional translation sites. As a Translation 3 class, we were approached by a Northwestern alumnus who is practicing dentistry and opening her own dental clinic to request that we translate her dental clinic’s policies and agreements for her Hispanic patients. As a class, we undertook the task of translating the alumnus’ documents …

Engagement In The History Classroom: Problem-Based Learning And Primary Sources, Lauren Seghi Apr 2018

Engagement In The History Classroom: Problem-Based Learning And Primary Sources, Lauren Seghi

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

Too often today, students have to sit idly in a history classroom listening to a lecture or reading out of a textbook which is why many people in society (adults and children alike) do not like or understand the complexity of history. This article argues that in order for students to be engaged in "doing" history in the classroom, they need to take part in problem-based learning (pbl) activities using primary sources from the past.

Rabbi Eliezer Of Beaugency, Commentaries On Amos And Jonah (With Selections From Isaiah And Ezekiel), Robert A. Harris Apr 2018

Rabbi Eliezer Of Beaugency, Commentaries On Amos And Jonah (With Selections From Isaiah And Ezekiel), Robert A. Harris

TEAMS Commentary Series

Rabbi Eliezer of Beaugency represents the pinnacle of twelfth-century rabbinic exegesis of the Bible. A proponent of the literal school, Eliezer completely abandoned traditional rabbinic midrash in his explication of biblical texts and innovated a literary approach that anticipated the fruits of modern scholarship in virtually every paragraph. This volume presents, for the first time in English translation, an extended window into the oeuvre of this master interpreter.
