Undermining Authoritarianism: Retrofitting The Zombie In "Seminário Dos Ratos" By Lygia Fagundes Telles, James R. Krause

Although the figure of the zombie has proved to be quite popular in recent years in Brazil—thanks in large part to the wave of imported graphic novels, television shows, and movies—Brazilian literature does not possess a strong tradition of autochthonous zombie narratives. Nevertheless, a number of texts lend themselves to a zombie reading, including “Seminário dos Ratos” (1977), by Lygia Fagundes Telles. Taking Oswald de Andrade’s 1928 “Manifesto antropófago” [Cannibalist Manifesto] as a point of departure, this article analyzes how zombies in Brazilian literature from 1900 to 1955 represent a kind of cultural cannibalism, consuming bodies as a way of resisting hegemonic power, oblivion and marginalization. Zombies variously represent rural inhabitants, modern consumers, prostitutes and hustlers who often become invisible, faceless, and voiceless, symbolizing the historical silencing of subalterns or “cannibals.”

Zombies And Immune Discourses In Hazael González’S “Luna De Sangre Sobre Lepanto”, Kiersty Lemon-Rogers

Using immune discourse to examine zombies in González’s “Luna de sangre,” I argue that his zombies function as embodied manifestations of physical, spiritual, and cultural contagion. The ideas of Roberto Esposito, Priscilla Wald, Mabel Moraña, Sarah J. Lauro and Karen Embry, put into conversation with González’s tale, help illuminate how the author uses monstrosity to demarcate the Other and define it as those who exist outside of the human, the normative, and more generally outside of the Western social order. The historical and contemporary context of “Luna de sangre” is one of nationalism, bigotry, walls, and anti-Islamic and anti-Semitic sentiment. …

With the United Nations World Tourism Organization forecasting 2 billion international tourists by the 2030 there is something to consider. A volume of travel to such a scale means an opportunity to harness the tourism industry to bring people closer to Jesus. This exploratory paper begins an exploration of Christians travel experiences and transformative impacts of those experiences through interactions with other Christians. Using data from a group text messages and a personal journal, this paper presents how one specific trip type - short-term mission - influences the ‘exchanged life’ first posited by the missionary Hudson Taylor in the 1800s. …

This article goes a step ahead from the focus of relative clause formation strategies in Shambala provided in previous Shambala studies (c.f. Besha, 200; and Riedel, 2009). It describes relative formation strategies in the Shambala Bantu language (G.23) by focusing on the analysis of the constraints posed by relative markers on tense systems of the language. The study reveals three important issues: first, the positioning of the Shambala relative markers is highly constrained by tense; second, in unmarked situations, every relative marker is restricted to a particular tense; and third, when marked, some relative markers may refer to other tenses …

Motivation For Learning Chinese As A Foreign Language: Experiences From Duce, Emmanuel Ilonga Dr

This study explores the motivation for learning Chinese language at the Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE). The major objective is to find out the reasons that motivated learners to enrol into the optional Chinese language course. The data used in the study was gathered through questionnaires and structured interviews. The presentation of findings reflected four types of motivation: intrinsic, extrinsic, integrative, and lastly, instrumental motivation. Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The historiography of industrialization in Nigeria has a rich but confused literature. Scholars from various disciplinary orientations have engaged this subject matter from perspectives that have complexified the idea and concept of industrialization in a colonial state. This study interrogates the various perspectives of intellectual inquiry on industrialization of colonial Nigeria, and argues that although industries and industrial activities existed in pre-colonial and colonial Nigeria, industrialization between 1914 and 1960, as portrayed by a number of scholars, was a farce.
