The Pariah And The Poet: Hannah Arendt’S Alternative Reading Of Goethe’S «Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre» As A Critique Of Enlightenment «Bildung», John Macready
Staff Publications
The German ideal of Bildung—the process of self-development through culture that Goethe dramatized in Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre—and its connection to the crises of Jewish emancipation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries has been the topic of intense scholarly discussion. At issue is whether Bildung compromised Jewish identity. One of the earliest and strongest critics of Bildung was Hannah Arendt. Although Bildung was seen by many Jewish intellectuals, like Moses Mendelssohn, to be an answer to widespread anti-Judaism in European society, Arendt saw it as an apolitical concept that jeopardized Jewish emancipation in Europe. Arendt was skeptical of the promise of …

Toward A Systematic Theology Of The Sanctuary: Part 1, John C. Peckham
Faculty Publications
This article is part one of an essay that offers some preliminary thoughts regarding the relationship of the sanctuary and systematic theology, focusing on just a few aspects which expose the relationship between the two. This article considers the nature of theological systems, issues related to an Adventist system of theology, and the relationship between fundamental theology and the sanctuary in particular, with attention to some broad, competing views of the sanctuary that are integrally related to the way one conceives of broader theological principles. This sets the stage for the second article, which will conclude the essay by discussing …

One of Omaha’s riots occurred September 28–29, 1919. The riot was by white people: it was not a race riot as they were frequently termed and it resulted in the brutal lynching of Will Brown, a black worker(he was also shot, burned and dragged through north Omaha); the death of two white rioters; the attempted hanging of Mayor Edward Parsons Smith; as well as white and black citizens; and a public rampage by thousands of white rioters who set fire to the Douglas County Courthouse in downtown Omaha. It followed more than 20 race riots that occurred in major industrial …

When Equality Matters, John Thrasher
When Equality Matters, John Thrasher
Philosophy Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Equality is at the heart of liberal, democratic political theory. Despite this, there is considerable disagreement about how we should understand equality in the context of liberal politics. Several different conceptions of equality (e.g., equality of opportunity, equality of welfare outcomes, and equality of basic rights) will recommend different and often conflicting policies and institutions. Further, we can expect, in democratic societies, that citizens will disagree on the correct conception of equality. This leads to the diversity problem of equality— there is no one conception of equality that will be acceptable to all citizens. This is compounded by the complexity …

The Arabs of Arabian Peninsula believed in life after death. This can be clearly realized by the attention they paid to the construction of graveyards and the respect they paid to the bodies of the dead during the pre-Islamic era. They built their tombs to take different shepes such as those carved in the rocks found on the surface of the ground and those built under the ground and embalmed bodies of the deal-to bear witness to this type of belief in life after death. They also had their own organization of dividing graveyards so that every individual could have …

The available water system requires meeting current and future needs, as low quantities of incoming or low quality will stand in front of economic development plans, which is reflected negatively, especially in the shrinking areas of agricultural land and the small number of crops that will be planted in a manner that puts the economy in decline compared with the steady increase in population.

The modern critical methods sought to generalize their procedural tools to be valid for reading texts that belong to different walks of life. Perhaps the critical mechanisms that proved their presence in the modern critical arena were presented by the theoreticians of the semantic approach to provide effective tools to enable critics of comprehension. It seems that this study reflects the availability of two requirements required by a successful study i.e. the division and tabulation of the subject (Metn) together with the procedural tools, the Metn is a movie space for a short film in which the director takes the …

After the grammarians had explored the utterance of the Arabs and put its regulations and rules, they realized that there are many “irregular” texts in the Qur`an and in the poetry and prose of the Arabs which go “out” of the general arrangement and the uniform meter. They tried to trace back these texts to the circle of "ruling" by different ways; till Ibn Jinni said, "that you find in too many cases of poetry and prose both [word] parsing and meaning struggling; this is calling you for something, and that is preventing you from it. Whenever they quarrel for …

Alegal: Biopolitics And The Unintelligibility Of Okinawan Life, Annmaria M. Shimabuku
Sociology
Okinawan life, at the crossroads of American militarism and Japanese capitalism, embodies a fundamental contradiction to the myth of the monoethnic state. Suspended in a state of exception, Okinawa has never been an official colony of the Japanese empire or the United States, nor has it ever been treated as an equal part of Japan. As a result, Okinawans live amid one of the densest concentrations of U.S. military bases in the world. By bringing Foucauldian biopolitics into conversation with Japanese Marxian theory, Alegal uncovers Japan’s determination to protect its middle class from the racialized sexual contact around its mainland …

A formerly human being that has been separated from its human consciousness, the has always been marked as more dead than alive. Yet in recent cultural production, another kind of zombie has emerged, what we might call the “sentient undead.” In these recent narratives, the undead protagonist is conscious of his or her inhumanity/non-humanness, along with the marginality of this position, and his or her potential “redemption” or return to humanity is often what drives the plot. Although the sentient zombie’s outsider position can function as a meditation on the social mores that make up human behavior, it also allows …

Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía
Argentinian director Alejandro Brugués’s 2011 Cuban-Spanish film Juan de los muertos and Mexican playwright Pedro Valencia’s 2013 play Con Z de zombie spring from similar roots: both initially place the blame for each country’s zombie apocalypse at the feet of the United States. In Brugués’s film, the accusation is clear but never proven: news reports interspersed through the film state that the country is being invaded by “dissidents” paid by the U.S. government, though there is no political or military U.S. presence in the film beyond the symbolic presence of the country’s flag. In Valencia’s Mexico, the cause is entirely …
