Nurturing The Cultural Desert: The Role Of Museums In Singapore, Su Fern Hoe, Terence Chong Mar 2018

Nurturing The Cultural Desert: The Role Of Museums In Singapore, Su Fern Hoe, Terence Chong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The absence of official platforms and institutions such as museums and visual arts spaces; while the artistic amateur scene was flourishing, there were no museums or national galleries where collections of the best local and regional artworks could be found, appreciated and studied by artists and citizens. This cultural desert was the result of the government’s attention to bread and butter issues. How, then, did Singapore transform from “cultural desert” of yesteryear to a city with 51 museums and 118 art galleries in 2013, as well as an arts scene that saw more than 3.2 million visitors to the national …

The Taiko Connection: Reclaiming History, Activating Equality, Tamiko Cavey Mar 2018

The Taiko Connection: Reclaiming History, Activating Equality, Tamiko Cavey

History

Taiko drumming has been a Japanese cultural art form from as early as the fifth century. A taiko "boom" in which ensemble groups gained popularity took off in Japan post-WWII, and in the United States during the late 1960s-early 1970s amid the Asian American Civil Rights Movement. In discussing the historical experiences of the burakumin outcastes of Japan and Japanese Americans, this paper explores how taiko has been used as a form of social activism for these marginalized groups, and how this cultural reclamation facilitates the process of developing self-identity.

Stagnant Supers: Amplifying The Superhero Genre Through Novelistic Maturity, Ariel Elizabeth Hubbard Mar 2018

Stagnant Supers: Amplifying The Superhero Genre Through Novelistic Maturity, Ariel Elizabeth Hubbard

Theses and Dissertations

Few superhero scholars, if any, are discussing physical age or definitions of maturity. It seems Hollywood and consumers are reluctant to associate "adult" content with anything other than pornography, immature language, and excessive violence—a reluctance that should be explored by scholars and critics alike. Most superhero characters only reflect the insecurities of audiences who are currently undergoing the transition between adolescence and young adulthood. There are very few older, middle-aged, or retired superheroes depicted juggling the demands of a family along with their daring rescues. It is possible that superhero films could continue to enjoy longer, lasting success if they …

Review Of David Johnson, Jesus, Christ And Servant Of God: Meditations On The Gospel According To John, Lorraine Watson

Quaker Religious Thought

The Gospel of John is often referred to as the Quaker Gospel. So it is with no surprise that David Johnson, a Quaker from Australia, chose to spend time with this particular book. Prior to writing, or even doing serious study on the Gospel of John, David Johnson meditated on the Gospel over an eight-month period, spending time with the text and allowing it to speak directly to his spirit. He writes about the deeper meaning opened to him, “This experience convinced me that the gospel is not just a record of Jesus’ ministry; it is also a consummate guide …

Leadership In The Creation Narrative, Jacques R. Doukhan Mar 2018

Leadership In The Creation Narrative, Jacques R. Doukhan

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

In the very first verses of the Bible, we see God set an example of leadership through his creation of the world. In this article, the author examines different elements of leadership exemplified in the Genesis account of creation; he maintains that this account demonstrates that to lead is to initiate, relate, serve, communicate, share, and create. While divinely exemplified in the story of creation, each of these traits has application to human leadership— namely the servant leadership style.

Frame, Preference, And Memory In Literary History Narration, Guoqiang Qiao Mar 2018

Frame, Preference, And Memory In Literary History Narration, Guoqiang Qiao

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Frame, Preference, and Memory in Literary History Narration" Guoqiang Qiao analyzes the frame, preference and memory in literary historiography from a narratological and cognitive perspectives. He maintains that literary history is of multileveled narration that includes not only the perceptualized literary events, literary figures, and literary works, but also the conceptualized spirit of the time, national culture, and personal and collective memories. Qiao employs the basic concepts of frame, preference, and memory to suggest a cognitive approach to the narration of literary history. To illustrate the complex construction of literary historiography, he provides examples from Chinese literary …

Vicarious Victimhood As Post-Holocaust Jewish Identity In Erica Fischer's Auto/Biography Aimée And Jaguar, Anne Rothe Mar 2018

Vicarious Victimhood As Post-Holocaust Jewish Identity In Erica Fischer's Auto/Biography Aimée And Jaguar, Anne Rothe

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Vicarious Victimhood as Post-Holocaust Jewish Identity in Erica Fischer's Auto/Biography Aimée and Jaguar" Anne Rothe reads the Austrian-Jewish journalist's interview-based dual biography in autobiographical terms. Taking recourse to such para-texts as the preface and epilogue, in which Fischer reflects on her own subject position, in addition to the auto/biographical narrative itself, Rothe critiques the notion of constructing secular Jewish identity based on the notion of vicarious or hereditary Holocaust victimhood. This provocative new reading reveals that the biography Fischer wrote constitutes a counter-narrative to the story her main collaborator, Lilly Wust, told the author about her …

Introduction: (Re)Presenting (Im)Migration, Jennifer Cooley

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This edition of UNIversitas is devoted to the study of Luis Argueta’s trilogy of documentary films about immigration, and, more broadly, the quest to faithfully represent the personal impact of immigration policies in the 21st century. Starting with abUSed: The Postville Raid (2010), followed by ABRAZOS (2014) and most recently The U Turn (2017), Argueta’s films invite us to reflect upon the ongoing injustices faced by Guatemalan migrants living in the Midwest and broader societal issues surrounding immigration as well. They do this by bringing individual stories to the forefront, by giving voice to those who are typically silenced, …

Seven Key Steps In Planning And Implementing A Successful Church Merger, Andrew Pietrylo Mar 2018

Seven Key Steps In Planning And Implementing A Successful Church Merger, Andrew Pietrylo

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The hypothesis of this project is that merging of two churches is a viable option for some congregations who are seeking to advance the kingdom of Christ. However, an analysis of obtainable literature reveals that there is little material available to assist churches that are interested in such a pursuit. This project will provide churches with an effective process of determining, implementing and maintaining a successful church merger. Utilizing information from Scripture, current trends, advice from church growth experts, observations of actual church mergers, and a post-merger survey, this project will develop practical steps to navigate churches through a successful …

Nurturing Church As A Biblical Strategy To Recover A Healthy Church Within South Korean Churches, Jinwook Kang Mar 2018

Nurturing Church As A Biblical Strategy To Recover A Healthy Church Within South Korean Churches, Jinwook Kang

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

There are many churches in South Korea, but not too many healthy churches. A healthy church should have a proof of early church from the Acts. It is impossible to be a healthy church only with a number of people, buildings, programs, and new church planting. The goal of this thesis is to suggest healthy biblical church using early church as a model and propose strategy. This study will first take a look at what is a healthy biblical church. A healthy biblical church is a nurturing church. Conventional church has a lot of nurturing programs, but this thesis compares …

Blood From The Sky: Miracles And Politics In The Early American Republic, Kyle Roberts Mar 2018

Blood From The Sky: Miracles And Politics In The Early American Republic, Kyle Roberts

History: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Early nineteenth-century Americans might not have lived in the “world of wonders” of their seventeenth-century forbears, argues Adam Jortner, Associate Professor of History at Auburn University, but they did inhabit a world where people still believed in the supernatural, where they discussed and debated those beliefs, and occasionally found themselves on the receiving end of persecution and violence as a result. In this valuable study, Jortner recovers the enduring presence of miracles, wonders, and other supernatural events in the decades following the American Revolution and challenges us to rethink how we interpret their place in the religious and political life …

The Queen Of Aquatics:The 1849 Display Of The Victoria Regia Water Lily As Imperial Theatre, Katie Maurine Jarvis

Theses and Dissertations

The Victoria regia was discovered in British Guiana in 1837, and for over ten years explorers and scientists tried different methods to transport viable seeds back to England. When the seeds were finally on British soil, no one could grow them successfully except Joseph Paxton, the head gardener for the Duke of Devonshire. Paxton built a special glass house at Chatsworth estate to mimic the tropical climate the Amazonian lily required, and created an innovative tank that was heated with coal and fitted with an apparatus to gently keep the water moving, replicating freshwater rivers. The œvegetable wonder, as it …

Learning From Our Mothers: Examining The Role Of Intergenerational Knowledge Transfer In Advancing Gender Equity Among Sri Lankan Youth, Ruvani Fonseka, Samantha Hurst Mar 2018

Learning From Our Mothers: Examining The Role Of Intergenerational Knowledge Transfer In Advancing Gender Equity Among Sri Lankan Youth, Ruvani Fonseka, Samantha Hurst

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Background
In a 2013 survey, over half of Sri Lankan men and women expressed gender-inequitable attitudes that equated masculinity with violence, and femininity with obedience to men. High rates of gender-inequitable attitudes are a community-level risk factor for gender-based violence including rape and intimate partner violence. In Sri Lanka, public health practitioners focused on reducing the health disparities resulting from gender inequity need to better understand the processes by which gender-inequitable attitudes develop and how to prevent them. The goal of this research was to identify potential points of intervention at which appropriate programmes and policies could most effectively cultivate …
