Interview With Beatriz Gallardo, Stephen J. Gaies, Polly Alfano Translator, Jennifer Cooley Translator

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Film has been a powerful tool in documenting and raising awareness about (im)migration. It can reveal the root causes of population movement, both voluntary and involuntary, and it can open our eyes to the economic, social, legal and psychological challenges of newcomers.

Beatriz (Bea) Gallardo Shaul has been involved as a film producer in bringing these issues of (im)migration to the attention of the general public and in preserving a record of the impact of these issues on the people of Guatemala. Gallardo earned a Masters in Communications from San Carlos University in Guatemala (cum laude). Her credits as a …

Coalitions Matter: Citizenship, Women, And Quota Adoption In Africa, Alice J. Kang, Aili Mari Tripp Mar 2018

Coalitions Matter: Citizenship, Women, And Quota Adoption In Africa, Alice J. Kang, Aili Mari Tripp

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

We provide new theory and evidence of the role of domestic women’s coalitions in the adoption of gender quotas. Previous research has shown the importance of women’s movements to policy change. We show that specific types of mobilization, often multiethnic in character, are a more precise way of describing these influences. Using a new dataset of coalitions in 50 countries in Africa (1989–2014), we first examine where coalitions are likely to emerge. Controlling for factors that correlate with their formation, we find that when domestic women’s organizations form a coalition for quotas, governments are more likely to adopt them and …

Contemporary Proposals About Reading In The Digital Age, Matthew K. Gold, Rachel Sagner Buurma Mar 2018

Contemporary Proposals About Reading In The Digital Age, Matthew K. Gold, Rachel Sagner Buurma

Publications and Research

Recent ideas about reading in literary criticism have centered around a fundamental question: what are the limits and affordances of human reading? Not all of these re-visitings of reading name technology as a central figure, yet they are all to varying degrees shaped by recent cultural attention to the emerging possibilities of machine reading and the reading of digitized and born-digital texts.

Memories Of A Raid, Cheryl Roberts Mar 2018

Memories Of A Raid, Cheryl Roberts

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Early spring, 2008. Exams finished, semester grades submitted. Many faculty and most students were already enjoying the start of summer break. I was serving as Head of the Department of Modern Languages so I had to be in the office, but traffic was light.

About a week before, rumors began circulating in the Hispanic community in Waterloo and nearby towns, where a number of Mexicans and Central Americans had found work. Was there going to be a raid? I didn’t know but promised to find out what I could. Soon FEMA minivans and busses were seen in town. The official …

Feminism In The Works Of Fawziyya Abū Khālid, Muneerah Badr Almahasheer Mar 2018

Feminism In The Works Of Fawziyya Abū Khālid, Muneerah Badr Almahasheer

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Feminism in the Works of Fawziyya Abū Khālid" Muneerah Badr Almahasheer examines how the Saudi poet Fawziyya Abū Khālid (1955–present) addresses feminism in her poems. Although distinct, Islam is frequently conflated with Arabic culture; consequently, women's role in Islam is commonly misunderstood. Therefore, following Western feminists, Muslim feminists have called for readings and understandings of the Qur'an, wherein the authority of the historically patriarchal interpretations is not assumed, and the sanctity of the text is valued. Through this lens, Abū Khālid's poems critically interrogate Arabic Muslim identity, particularly with regard to gender. A selected reading of Abū …

Out With The Old: Reinventing Space In The Classroom, Amandine Annie Loveland Mar 2018

Out With The Old: Reinventing Space In The Classroom, Amandine Annie Loveland

Theses and Dissertations

This research study explored the impact of space and classroom environments on student engagement and learning. The traditional classroom design is determined mostly by the personality of the teacher, or the theme that they choose to integrate. Traditionally, tables and desks are placed in groups or rows, based on teacher preference, and students are confined to small 2 feet by 3 feet spaces. While teachers thus make their classrooms private to themselves and seldom involve students in crucial decisions about their layout, schools are inherently public places. In this thesis, targeted at elementary school teachers, the teacher/researcher considers the benefits …

An Annunciation For A Secular Age: The Struggle For Faith In Mary Szybist's Incarnadine, Devin Morgan Theurer Mar 2018

An Annunciation For A Secular Age: The Struggle For Faith In Mary Szybist's Incarnadine, Devin Morgan Theurer

Theses and Dissertations

Mary Szybist's 2013 collection, Incarnadine, uses the Annunciation as a foundational narrative through which to examine the implications of faith and having a relationship with God. Transforming this pivotal Biblical event through metaphor, intertextuality, and different points of view, Szybist showcases what Charles Taylor terms "fragilization" of faith, or the contestable and dubious position of believing among plurality of belief and nonbelief. By repeatedly shifting the framing of the Annunciation, Szybist creates several different visions of who God is. Rather than reinterpreting the Annunciation with a new dictum on exactly who God is and what it means to believe …

Disoriented Nationalist Discourse Of The Wenxuan Group Amidst Manchukuo’S Anti-Modern Chorus, Chao Liu Mar 2018

Disoriented Nationalist Discourse Of The Wenxuan Group Amidst Manchukuo’S Anti-Modern Chorus, Chao Liu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Disoriented Nationalist Discourse of the Wenxuan Group amidst Manchukuo's Anti-Modern Chorus" Chao Liu analyzes the proposal of "native-land literature" made by left-wing Chinese writers in occupied northeast China. As it turns out, inheriting the nationalist discourse of the May Fourth Movement and further radicalizing it via a "new romanticism," those writers over-emphasized the socio-political function of literary production and took native-land literature as the most effective tool for nationalist mobilization. Accordingly, they repelled modern civilization as it was associated with the colonists, relying instead on natural wilderness and primitive force and thus adopting subject matters as well …

Pantheism And Escapism In Abu Madi's 'Enigmas' And 'The Evening' From English Romanticism Perspectives, Yasser K. R. Aman Mar 2018

Pantheism And Escapism In Abu Madi's 'Enigmas' And 'The Evening' From English Romanticism Perspectives, Yasser K. R. Aman

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Pantheism and Escapism in Abu Madi's 'Enigmas' and 'The Evening' From English Romanticism Perspectives" Yasser K. R. Aman investigates and analyses the possibilities of pantheism's encirclement of escapism in Elia Abu Madi's two poems from English Romanticism perspective. The article compares Abu Madi's fluctuating attitude towards escapism and pantheism to William Wordsworth's "Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey, On Revisiting the Banks of the Wye during a Tour July 13, 1798," Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," and Percy Bysshe Shelley's "Ode to the West Wind," highlighting the affinities and differences. The …

Other-Languagedness In Stories By R.K. Narayan, Saadat Hassan Manto, And Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Biljana Djorić Francuski

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Other-languagedness in Stories by R.K. Narayan, Saadat Hassan Manto, and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala" Biljana Djorić Francuski examines, within a comparative framework, the concepts of otherness and other-languagedness as expressed in three short stories by authors from separate but interconnected cultures: an Indian English writer, Rasipuram Krishnaswamy Narayan; a Pakistani writer, Saadat Hassan Manto; and a writer of European origins who lived in and wrote about India, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. The author analyzes, within the context of the (post)colonial discourse, the instances of misunderstanding resulting from binary oppositions between the interlocutors, due to their mutual otherness.

Deromanticized Cosmopolitanism In Smith’S Swing Time And Chi’S 晚安玫瑰 (Goodnight, Rose), Songyun Zheng Mar 2018

Deromanticized Cosmopolitanism In Smith’S Swing Time And Chi’S 晚安玫瑰 (Goodnight, Rose), Songyun Zheng

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Deromanticized Cosmopolitanism in Smith's Swing Time and Chi's 晚安玫瑰 (Goodnight, Rose)" Songyun Zheng proposes a theoretical framework of deromanticized cosmopolitanism to conduct a comparative reading of Zadie Smith's Swing Time, a transcontinental narrative of London, New York, and Africa, and Zijian Chi's Goodnight, Rose, about a Jewish émigré living in Harbin, China. Zheng reframes cosmopolitanism by recognizing its contradictory and multifaceted nature, and questions the assumed connection between cosmopolitanism and cross-boundary activities such as migration and interracial relationships. The two novels form a constellation of deromanticized cosmopolitanism with characters of transcultural backgrounds …

Meridians 16:2, Ginetta Candelario

Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism

It is a bittersweet pleasure to publish this special issue on Black women's health, guest edited by Jameta Nicole Barlow and LeConte J. Dill. The serendipitous timing of a special issue focused on Black women's health is particularly significant at this historical moment when Black women have launched and are leading movements such as #BlackLivesMatter, #SayHerName, and #MeToo because Black men, women, and children continue to be disproportionately subjected to life-threatening, state-based, structural and interpersonal violence in the United States....
