Machismo, Carnival, And The Decolonial Imagination In The Writings Of Junot D<Ã>Az, Joshua Evans Price Mar 2018

Machismo, Carnival, And The Decolonial Imagination In The Writings Of Junot D<Ã>Az, Joshua Evans Price

Theses and Dissertations

This work explores Junot Daz as an author of decolonial imagination, and more specifically, how the carnivalesque nature of Dominican machismo as influenced by Trujillos el tguere masculinity creates liminal space for self-determination in opposition to colonial imagination. In exploring Dazs primary masculine characters, Oscar de Leon and Yunior de Las Casas, I trace the initial decolonial turn engendered by tigueraje performance, namely its projective creation of self outside of colonial domination. El tguere machismo as empowering for Dominican males, however, is problematized by its reciprocal domination of both women and men who fail to meet the tigueraje ideal. It …

Therapeutic Approach In Moral Education: A Critical Assessment, Jan Habl Mar 2018

Therapeutic Approach In Moral Education: A Critical Assessment, Jan Habl

Pro Rege

This study aims to critically assess the so-called therapeutic approach in moral education, which emerged in the postwar twentieth century, in the western part of the world. The proponents of the approach used different terms to express its essence: value clarification method, or sometimes the decision-making method or the critical thinking method. These philosophies of education have the common feature of a personalistic, non-directive, or client-oriented approach to the individual. Therefore, I will refer to them here as therapeutic. There are many advocates, but some of the most notable should be named: Carl Rodgers, Jean Piaget, Lawrence Kohlberg, Sidney B. …

Foreign Born Latina Earnings And Returns To Education And Experience In The United States, Trevor Mattos Mar 2018

Foreign Born Latina Earnings And Returns To Education And Experience In The United States, Trevor Mattos

Gastón Institute Publications

The determinants of immigrant earnings have long been a heavily researched topic, beginning with the contributions of Chiswick (1978) and Borjas (1985). The majority of this work focuses on male immigrants. Prior findings provide conflicting results with respect to determinants of native and foreign-born earnings in the U.S. This study, however, focuses on the earnings levels and differential returns to education and experience between native and foreign-born Latina workers in the U.S. using pooled American Community Survey microdata from 2014, 2015, and 2016. The analytical approach borrows from Chiswick’s 1978 paper that utilized cross-sectional regression methods and the human capital …

Whose Blue Heaven? Musicality In The Early Japanese Talkies, Richard M Davis Mar 2018

Whose Blue Heaven? Musicality In The Early Japanese Talkies, Richard M Davis

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article focuses on the advent of synchronized sound production in Japan in 1931 – three years later than the United States – and the generative ambiguities of how sound and music’s relationship to film was figured in that year’s anxious discourse. I argue that this ‘belatedness’ is echoed in relationships of on-screen image and offscreen sound, noise, and music in two important early sound films, The Neighbor’s Wife and Mine (Gosho 1931) and A Tipsy Life (Kimura 1933).

Lessons In Global Commerce (From An Early East India Company Employee), Emily Soon

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

International trade hurts local communities. It causes economic hardship at home and destroys the environment, while the culture of consumerism it fuels is destroying our values and way of life. Similar sentiments to these recur across the media today: this so-called backlash against globalisation is said to have contributed to Brexit and the rise of Trump, and to have transformed the shape of political movements across the world. This pent-up frustration seems to be quintessentially twenty-first century, the disillusioned rant of a world no longer charmed by the siren song of free trade and borderless commerce. And yet, the sentiments …

Global Ambitions: Positioning Singapore As A Contemporary Arts Hub, Su Fern Hoe

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This chapter has two objectives. The first is to critically interrogate the state’s efforts in utilising the visual arts as a means to position Singapore as an international arts hub and marketplace. As Kwok Kian Woon and Low Kee-Hong have noted, “Singapore’s cultural policy has everything to do with staying on top as a focal node in the late-capitalist world system of the new millennium” (Kwok and Low, 2002, p. 154). This chapter offers an overview of the programmes and initiatives introduced by the state from the 1990s to the present in order to encourage the entry of international art …

Insights And Observations On Lexicography. Word By Word: The Secret Life Of Dictionaries, Gerald Leonard Cohen Mar 2018

Insights And Observations On Lexicography. Word By Word: The Secret Life Of Dictionaries, Gerald Leonard Cohen

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

This book presents the insights and observations on lexicography as acquired by Merriam-Webster copy editor Kory Stamper over a period of some twenty years. It does so with verve, humor, passion, and a heavy dose of personal anecdotes (very welcome). This book isn’t exactly an autobiography, but it comes close.

The observations/insights concern such matters as the enormous time/effort/reflection that can go into defining a single word and the potential minefield presented by the search for suitable verbal illustrations. The nuts-and-bolts work of a copy editor is not normally regarded as interesting to a general readership, and yet Stamper does …

No Shortage Of Tanks!: The Canadian Army’S System For The Recovery, Repair And Replacement Of A And B Vehicles And Major Weapons Systems, Arthur Gullachsen

Canadian Military History

This article is an overview of the First Canadian Army in North West Europe’s ability to recover, repair and damaged, destroyed and broken down vehicles and weapons systems. This capability was a crucial factor in maintaining the overall combat power of the Canadian Army Overseas during operations in the last year of war. To support this argument the author examines Canadian wartime primary documents as well as multiple secondary sources.
