“Ain’T It A Pretty Night?”: An Analysis Of Carlisle Floyd’S Susannah As An Allegory For The Socio-Political Culture Of The United States In The 1950s, Melissa L. Allen

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This capstone thesis discusses the applicability of Carlisle Floyd’s 1955 opera, Susannah, as an allegory for the socio-political climate of the United States in the 1950s. In order to do so, a musical analysis of the opera’s score was then performed for its use of folk song conventions and verismo operatic conventions. The libretto was analyzed for the use of social conventions of Southern Appalachia. Characters actions and musical content were then judged on whether (1) their actions were in line with the social conventions of traditional Appalachian culture and (2) if their musical content used/reflected conventions of traditional Appalachian …

Empire State Of Being: Modern Women And The Literary Streets Of New York City, Kristen A. Greiner May 2017

Empire State Of Being: Modern Women And The Literary Streets Of New York City, Kristen A. Greiner

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This project is an analysis of the portrayal of modern women in the 1920s American literature written by ethnic female authors. It focuses on the stories of women in New York City, honing in on those from the neighborhoods of the Lower East Side and Harlem. These ethnic female authors offer incredibly different interpretations of the early twentieth century woman when compared to their male counterparts, as they present them as more authoritative and strong characters, while displaying how the influence of space in New York City affects the identity of the characters on the page. Using the texts, Salome …

I, A Saint; I, A Sinner: Rereading Female Sanctity In Chaucer’S “Lyfe Of Seinte Cecile” And Kate Horsley’S Confessions Of A Pagan Nun, Lillian Constance May 2017

I, A Saint; I, A Sinner: Rereading Female Sanctity In Chaucer’S “Lyfe Of Seinte Cecile” And Kate Horsley’S Confessions Of A Pagan Nun, Lillian Constance

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This thesis compares a medieval and modern text, Chaucer’s “Lyfe of Seinte Cecile” and Kate Horsley’s Confessions of a Pagan Nun," to explore female spirituality. Horsley writes in the twenty-first century, a time of significantly more opportunity for women compared to the fourteenth-century world of Chaucer. The latter belongs to the virgin martyr sub-genre of medieval hagiography, a genre Horsley mimics. These differences aside, both texts are revealing of Christianity's ability both to empower and to oppress women. A comparison of Horsley’stwenty-first century rendition of the life of a medieval woman with Chaucer’s fourteenth-century version exposes the problems …

Gender In Eliot's The Mill On The Floss And Hardy's Far From The Madding Crowd, Rachel C. Nelson May 2017

Gender In Eliot's The Mill On The Floss And Hardy's Far From The Madding Crowd, Rachel C. Nelson

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This text explores the characters of Maggie and Tom Tulliver from George Eliot’s 1860 novel The Mill on the Floss and the characters of Bathsheba Everdene and Gabriel Oak from Thomas Hardy’s 1874 novel Far from the Madding Crowd. It connects the two novels by way of the relationships between these main characters. In both cases, the female character struggles with the confines of Victorian societal limits for women based on their gender. In The Mill, Maggie constantly struggles against the wishes of her older brother, and while Tom is arguably an antagonistic force in the novel, this …

Creative Advertising Portfolio, Hayley E. Sunderman

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Since I was a young child, all I wanted was to draw and write. I would compose entire binders of my artwork, as well as Microsoft Word documents of the beginnings of mystery novels. As I grew older, I let my self-doubt take over and I convinced myself that I was not talented enough to pursue any type of creative career path. I came into college as a Marketing major knowing that my future career options would be fairly vast. During my junior year, I realized my strong desire to work in creative advertising. Graphic design, copywriting, photography, videography, and …

An Examination Of Early Jewish Thought On The Afterlife, Robert E. Graham Iii

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This paper examines the development of various theories about the afterlife – and even beyond theories that deal with post-mortem – in the early Jewish period. There is an emphasis placed on the development of the theory of predestination within the Qumran Yachad – the Dead Sea Scrolls Community. The main text utilized for arguing the development of predestination thought in the literature of the Qumranites is the Rule of the Community. Other various texts from the Hebrew Bible and from the early Jewish period are examined in order to explain the development of other theories such as resurrection, immortality …

An Experimental Study On Drag Reduction Of Aftermarket Additions On An Suv, Christiana L. Katsoulos May 2017

An Experimental Study On Drag Reduction Of Aftermarket Additions On An Suv, Christiana L. Katsoulos

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Over recent years, the awareness of climate change has become more prevalent worldwide and one major contributor to global warming has been the use of transportation. Vehicles contribute to global warming by releasing petroleum based emissions such as significant amounts of carbon dioxide and numerous other harmful environmental pollutants. SUVs contribute to the emissions problem more so than sedans, since they have lower gas mileage and need more gasoline regularly. The main functionality of sport utility vehicles, or SUVs, includes hauling or off-roading and fuel efficiency is not always the focus in the design process. However, aerodynamic enhancements could improve …

Technology From The Perspective Of Society And Public Interest, Chanwoon Park May 2017

Technology From The Perspective Of Society And Public Interest, Chanwoon Park

Purdue Polytechnic Doctoral Dissertations

The ultimate goals of this study were to determine ways to reconcile technology with public interest and to understand the relationship between what we know and how we feel about technology. To achieve the goals, related literatures were reviewed; the mechanism of technology development was described with empirical data; and human perception of technology was tested with a survey. The duality of technology that implied technological inherencies of technical reason and social meanings was the principle assumption of the study. Neutrality of technology becomes a myth with the presence of social meanings embodied in technology. Given the huge impact of …

Where Are You From: Essays On Finding Home, Georgia Knapp

Creative Nonfiction MFA Theses

"Where Are You From?" is an essay collection that seeks to answer the question of where someone is from. Their birthplace or the last place that they lived? The place where they have lived the longest, or the place that they identify with most with? The eleven essays in this collection engage these questions and others in an attempt to reconcile the author's deep-seated and pervasive sense of dislocation. In settings ranging from the Shetland Islands to Greece to Chicago, this collection explores what it means to call a place home––or not.

Stance Taking As A Marker Of Identity In Bilingual Hispanic Millennials, Marc Gehlsen May 2017

Stance Taking As A Marker Of Identity In Bilingual Hispanic Millennials, Marc Gehlsen

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The analysis of stance taking in discourse has several implications about the expression of the identity of the speaker by means of sentence formation consistent with patterns among members of a speech community. This study focuses on the ways in which speakers that are considered a part of the millennial generation (birth dates between 1982 and 2004) express their identity as US-born Latino heritage speakers. Through an analysis of previous case studies, pre-recorded individual interviews of the target group, and research in the field of stance taking, I outline the ways in which a speaker can use stance to express …

Navigating University Bureaucracy For Social Change: Transgender & Gender-Nonconforming Students, Kate Hoffman May 2017

Navigating University Bureaucracy For Social Change: Transgender & Gender-Nonconforming Students, Kate Hoffman

Senior Theses

In large university structures, bureaucracy serves to provide academic support and foster student success. Additionally, some argue that with the increasing view of universities as businesses, bureaucracy is ever-growing to serve as the ‘customer support’ for their students. Due to pressures for large university campuses to accommodate more and more students, the bureaucratic offices to serve those students are ever-increasing and ever-diversifying. Regardless of how one may view the purpose of bureaucracy, it has been lauded as an inefficient and frustrating necessity to navigating higher education. This paper will contain an analysis of a large Southern university campus, using the …

The Silenced: An Artistic Analysis Of Memory And Conflict, Kittridge Janvrin May 2017

The Silenced: An Artistic Analysis Of Memory And Conflict, Kittridge Janvrin

Senior Theses

The ability to tell stories has always been one I considered most valuable. Histories have been passed down across generations, tales of war and independence, of crimes and justice. Storytelling is not unique to one particular culture or people, instead traversing divides both geographic and societal. This permeation of words, of voices that convey histories both real and imagined is the driving force behind my thesis. The culmination of my research, which is outlined in the following reflection, is an original short play. While based on the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the play speaks to the power behind every story …

Ophelia's Reflection, Kelley Kennedy May 2017

Ophelia's Reflection, Kelley Kennedy

Senior Theses

This project examines Ophelia's role in the thematic exploration of the nature of the individual self in Shakespeare's Hamlet. First, I discuss the different models of subjectivity and virtue that Ophelia embodies and by which characters around her judge her actions. Her father, Polonius, espouses a form of Renaissance humanism that Shakespeare counters throughout the play. He believes the imitation of noble qualities can affect inner goodness, and he demands Ophelia's obedience of his instructions regarding noble conduct. In contrast, Hamlet locates moral authority within the individual, and he dismisses Polonius' notions of elite selfpresentation as vulgar performances. Both men …
