Marching Band And The College Transition, Jessica Fix May 2017

Marching Band And The College Transition, Jessica Fix

Honors Projects

The relationship between college student engagement and personal growth has been studied for decades. However, involvement in specific types of organizations or activities has not been researched as in-depth. This study examined involvement in college marching band specifically and how it affects transition into college and overall growth and learning of college students. This study analyzes quantitative data of all marching band participants at Bowling Green State University in the most recent year (2016-2017), as well as qualitative data retrieved through focus group sessions with first year marchers and returning marchers. Results of this study suggest that involvement in marching …

Redefining Virtue In Shakespeare's Merry Wives Of Windsor, Melissa Rose Piccinonno May 2017

Redefining Virtue In Shakespeare's Merry Wives Of Windsor, Melissa Rose Piccinonno

Theses and Dissertations

Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor is a play of social justice. It is a staging of the type of power that women can harness in spaces of extreme limitation and violation. The female characters in this play, specifically Mistress Page and Mistress Ford, are able to use tools of oppression meant to keep them subordinate to men to achieve their personal objectives.

“Without Stopping To Write A Long Apology”: Spectacle, Anecdote, And Curated Identity In Running A Thousand Miles For Freedom, Anjelica La Furno May 2017

“Without Stopping To Write A Long Apology”: Spectacle, Anecdote, And Curated Identity In Running A Thousand Miles For Freedom, Anjelica La Furno

Theses and Dissertations

Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom unapologetically challenges traditional nineteenth-century notions of race and gender by way of its treatment of spectacle, anecdotal use, and assertion of authorial choices that contradict the expectations of a white abolitionist audience. Its most challenging feature is what I will call Ellen’s “curated identity.”

"Collaborating With Chance", Alyse Gellis

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

Have you ever felt a desire to get lost on a journey much larger than yourself or experience the thrill of the unknown? Think about a time you intentionally swam further out in a lake or the sea than you have before, or drove down a road without knowing where it would take you, or wandered around a new city without a map. Think about how you made the decision to push those boundaries. Remember how taking that risk in pursuit of an unknown made you feel, because it is that thrill that drives my artistic practice. Through my thesis …

In The Library And Online: Social Media And Civic Discourse, Samantha A. Mairson

Honors Scholar Theses

This thesis analyzes the findings of an interview-based research study of public-serving libraries in the state of Connecticut. Specifically, it examines these institutions’ use of social media to promote civic discourse online and on-site with the purpose of producing guidelines for best practices. This new research emerges from the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts research Experience (SHARE) Award project, “Museums, Libraries, and Civic Discourse in Connecticut,” which concluded Spring 2016.

The research develops an understanding of the use of social media by public-serving libraries, presents three models for dissemination of findings to the field, and concludes with key observations and …

Conrad's Pronoun Usage As A Stylistic Marker And Its Relation To His Density Of Text And Themes, Jennifer K. Onishi May 2017

Conrad's Pronoun Usage As A Stylistic Marker And Its Relation To His Density Of Text And Themes, Jennifer K. Onishi

English Department Theses

In this thesis I perform a close examination of Conrad’s use of pronouns. Before this data is related, a brief overview of Conrad’s linguistic history and the history of his criticism is presented. This overview allows for the data to be placed in the context of his linguistic interference. It also lays out what aspects of Conrad’s language have already been explored. Pronouns are analyzed by word, type, and distance from the referent. The results of this study are then combined with statistical data from previous studies of Conrad’s grammar and linguistics. This combined data is used to explain one …

“That Dark Parade”: Emily Dickinson And The Victorian "Cult Of Death”, Carol M. Degrasse May 2017

“That Dark Parade”: Emily Dickinson And The Victorian "Cult Of Death”, Carol M. Degrasse

English Department Theses

The elegiac poems of Emily Dickinson provide what is perhaps the clearest depiction of the conflicting emotions inherent to the death-conscious nineteenth century. In one such poem, Dickinson’s oxymoronic phrase, “Dark Parade,” encapsulates the spirit of a social movement that was born of a desire to comfort the grief-stricken and to beautify the horrific. Throughout Dickinson’s corpus of elegiac poetry, the speaker echoes these sentiments and crafts an insightful portrait, juxtaposing the stark horror of death with the ethereal beauty of ceremony. As Dickinson’s elegies are traced over time, the poems develop as microcosmic representations of a grieving nation, as …

Race, Gender, And Exile In Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises And Baldwin's Giovanni's Room, Abby E. Gould May 2017

Race, Gender, And Exile In Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises And Baldwin's Giovanni's Room, Abby E. Gould

Senior Theses

This senior thesis for the South Carolina Honors College conducts a literary analysis of Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises and James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room. Across these two texts, I focus on expatriates, examining the psychological trauma that ensues when they are forced to define their “self” not in terms of where they are, but in terms of who they really are. These challenges to one’s self, I argue, illuminate the complexity of gender and sexual identity as well as the social structures that assign values to certain forms or expressions of masculinity.

The Effects Of Cross Training On Ballet Dance, Allison Holland May 2017

The Effects Of Cross Training On Ballet Dance, Allison Holland

Senior Theses

The dictionary defines cross training as, “the action or practice of engaging in two or more sports or types of exercise in order to improve fitness or performance in one’s main sport” (“cross-train”). While ballet dancers may look physically fit and slim, ballet dancers do not always give their bodies proper care. This thesis will explain the elements of ballet training that are crucial for development as an artist and a dancer. It will also discuss the benefits of cross training for ballet dancers and how this should be incorporated into the ballet curriculum. Finally, this thesis will discuss the …

Gatekeeping: Women, People Of Color, And The Video Game Community, Bonnie Harris-Lowe May 2017

Gatekeeping: Women, People Of Color, And The Video Game Community, Bonnie Harris-Lowe

Senior Theses

Gamers are a large, diverse group of people, but they are not treated as such within their own community. AAA video games are designed largely by and for white men at the expense of women and racial minorities. These groups are grossly underrepresented in video games and are often poorly depicted when they do exist in virtual spaces. Stereotypes and other negative attitudes towards these groups are exacerbated and furthered by their portrayals in video games. The wide quantitative and qualitative gaps between female characters and characters of color compared to white male characters has contributed to a toxic culture …

Authoritarian Figures In U.S. Politics: How Joseph Mccarthy Can Inform Our Understanding Of Donald Trump, Daniel Huddleston May 2017

Authoritarian Figures In U.S. Politics: How Joseph Mccarthy Can Inform Our Understanding Of Donald Trump, Daniel Huddleston

Senior Theses

Senator Joseph McCarthy’s career can help inform our understanding of the election of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States. Both men seized the opportunity provided by authoritarian moments in U.S. history in which part of the population felt their way of life was under attack by global and national forces and looked for strongmen who promised to protect them. In the 1950s, the U.S. was in the middle of the Cold War, and the fear of communism was 4 pervasive in the country. In 2016, immigration, terrorism, and cultural shifts in the United States were affecting …

Questions Of The Pink Dress: Gender Representation And Perception In Turn-Of-The-Century Chick Flicks, Madison Ivey May 2017

Questions Of The Pink Dress: Gender Representation And Perception In Turn-Of-The-Century Chick Flicks, Madison Ivey

Senior Theses

At the turn of the twenty-first century two chick flicks entered the scene featuring comedic commentary on expectations of gender representation. Although the blanket genre “chick flicks” often is considered “a disparaging term that diminish[es] the significance of women-oriented cinema,” its loose criteria of having “a primary appeal to female viewers…concentration on issues relevant to women, and…focus on a female protagonist” apply to both films (Hollinger 221). The term “women’s films” could be used instead, or even “romantic comedy” (despite a lack of focus on the love narratives), but since the two films, Miss Congeniality (Petrie, 2000) and Legally Blonde …

Controlled Authenticity: A Hybrid Account Of Personal Autonomy, Eric Fox May 2017

Controlled Authenticity: A Hybrid Account Of Personal Autonomy, Eric Fox

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This thesis explores the concept of authenticity as a mode of self-identity, and how an added layer of control through the application of personal autonomy enables an agent to more readily achieve authentic states of being and satisfaction. Comparing the work of Diana Meyers and Marina Oshana, two prominent, contemporary writers in the field of personal autonomy, this paper attempts to establish the ground works for what components are necessary to a personal autonomy account as well as highlighting the contrasting aspects of both views. The paper engages in a synthesis of these two views, combining the social-relational theory of …
