En esta presentación se comparan dos procesos de reducción consonántica presentes en la norma lingüística culta que se manifiesta en la televisión de dos países: la realización de la /d/ intervocálica postónica en España, y la variación de la /s/ implosiva en la República Dominicana. El análisis revela la presencia de un caso de valoración social inversa de la relajación de los dos segmentos fonéticos analizados. El modo de hablar culto expuesto en la televisión española acepta como normal la omisión total del segmento /d/ en el contexto fonético específico [-ádo]; excluye, sin embargo, la variante aspirada de /s/ en …

On September 29, 2017, Chris Wydman interviewed Richard Roy (Class of 1970) about his experiences as a founding member of the Beta Phi Omega fraternity during Wright State University’s early years . Roy discusses campus independence in 1967, the development of Greek life traditions, student government, and responses to national unrest including Kent State and Vietnam War protests. The interview highlights the formative culture and community of Wright State’s first generation of students.

Contentious Coexistence: The Function Of Material Exchanges In Venetian-Egyptian Relations On The Eve Of The Ottoman Conquest (1480-1517), Jesse Jacob Hysell

This dissertation studies cross-cultural exchanges of material goods in order to better understand early modern encounters between subjects of Venice and the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt. It focuses on the period 1480 to 1517, when the ascendant Portuguese and Ottoman empires began to alter the balance of power in both the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean. Venetian merchants had by this time established communities in Egypt and the Levant in their search for pepper and other spices, and periodically called in ambassadors to intervene with the Mamluk sultans on their behalf. Come explore intellectual freedom during Banned Books Week (Sept. 24-30) with this enchanted perspective inspired by Harry Potter.
Identifying certain ideas as dangerous - and therefore banned or otherwise restricted - is a perennial phenomenon, manifesting throughout every time and culture. When reading the Harry Potter series, one encounters the Restricted Section in the Hogwarts Library, where the reader is informed that books about the Dark Arts and how to defend oneself against them are found.
