The Ritualism Of The Body In The Poetic Discourse Of The Jurists Of The Second Abbasid Era, Yasser Ali Abdul Khalidi, Zainab Ali Hussein
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
This research sheds light on the style of the body, as a dominant core, on the poetic taste of the poet / poet of the second Abbasid period. The poet is surrounded by a religious system that cannot be separated from it. He found in the poetry the only outlet to express all the gestures of silence in his speech. The body was shaped by the humming of the latent discourse, which revealed the joints of masculine desire, and declared. The female was still, in the depths of the masculine mind, of the lusts and desires of the appetite of …

Descent And Ascent In Hayden's Symbolic Elegy “The Diver”, Saad Najim Al-Kafaji, Nour Abdul-Kadhim Abdul-Alli Auda Al-Rikabi
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
Mourning and suffering are central topics within Robert Hayden’s poem. He has introduced into the canon of elegy a special kind of mourning – intractable work of mourning. Hayden colors his poetics of loss with the special work and dilemmas of his black consciousness. Therefore, this paper gives an interpretive analysis of one of his most important elegies “The Diver,” which would serve as a methodological paradigm for the literary analysis of Hayden’s elegies and elegiac texts in general.
Impressive Failures: Mavericks Of Film Authorship And The Impossibility Of Success In Hollywood, Tom S. Davies
Impressive Failures: Mavericks Of Film Authorship And The Impossibility Of Success In Hollywood, Tom S. Davies
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation directly challenges the critical and commercial primacy of success attached to Hollywood films and their filmmakers, especially when one argues for or against their quality and/or importance within cinematic history. Through a process of shifting and multiplying perspectives within a broader narrative that is critical of what separates success and failure, certain films and filmmakers that were judged as failures or disappointments under impossible prerequisites of creating a successful film––commercially, aesthetically, or both–– are, instead, reconsidered as constructive counterpoints to the expectations of the Hollywood economic field of production as well as to the inevitable disappointment of the …
From Protest Song To Social Song: Music And Politics In Colombia, 1966-2016, Joshua Katz-Rosene
From Protest Song To Social Song: Music And Politics In Colombia, 1966-2016, Joshua Katz-Rosene
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Based on archival and ethnographic fieldwork in the cities of Bogotá and Medellín, this dissertation documents the development of canción protesta (protest song) in Colombia in the 1960s, and tracks its evolution in subsequent decades. At the turn of the 1970s, songwriters affiliated with a grassroots canción protesta movement in Bogotá used music as a vehicle for disseminating leftist political ideology and extolling the revolutionary guerrilla groups that had formed in the Colombian countryside in the preceding years. However, canción protesta was an urban phenomenon that emerged in tandem with other countercultural currents, and their confluence in the late 1960s …
Butch Between The Wars: A Pre-History Of Butch Style In Twentieth-Century Literature, Music, And Film, Karen Allison Hammer
Butch Between The Wars: A Pre-History Of Butch Style In Twentieth-Century Literature, Music, And Film, Karen Allison Hammer
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Butch Between the Wars is a pre-history of “butch,” a twentieth-century masculine style that became an identity category for lesbians in the 1940s and ’50s. Between the two world wars and in the early postwar period, women used the energy of butch to create literature, music, and character on film. Butch-styled artists expressed a muscular orientation to the world, one with close associations to lower and working class black and white masculinities. Those who were recognizably lesbian and those with less clearly defined sexualities challenged the idea that strength, authority, and independence are qualities “naturally” bound to the male body. …
The Column Of Constantine At Constantinople: A Cultural History (330-1453 C.E.), Carey Thompson Wells
The Column Of Constantine At Constantinople: A Cultural History (330-1453 C.E.), Carey Thompson Wells
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis discusses the cultural history of the Column of Constantine at Constantinople, exploring its changing function and meaning from Late Antiquity to the end of the Byzantine era. Originally erected as a pagan triumphal column in celebration of Constantine’s re-foundation of Byzantium as Constantinople in 330 C.E., this monument was soon reinterpreted within a Christian context and acquired its own relic tradition, most significantly relics from Christ’s Passion. In addition, as the centuries passed, this relic tradition increased to include objects significant not only to Biblical history but also Constantinopolitan history. Because of this, in the middle Byzantine period, …

Smita Patil: Fiercely Feminine, Lakshmi Ramanathan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Smita Patil is an Indian actress who worked in films for a twelve year period between 1974 and 1986, during which time she established herself as one of the powerhouses of the Parallel Cinema movement in the country. She was discovered by none other than Shyam Benegal, a pioneering film-maker himself. She started with a supporting role in Nishant, and never looked back, growing into her own from one remarkable performance to the next. She quickly became the go-to actress for most of the film-makers working in Parallel Cinema at the time. Patil was soon critically acclaimed both within …
Transferring Paremias. Cultural, Linguistic, And Literary Transitions Of Proverbs And Proverbial Phrases By Vincenzo Brusantino, Pompeo Sarnelli, And John Florio, Daniela D'Eugenio
Transferring Paremias. Cultural, Linguistic, And Literary Transitions Of Proverbs And Proverbial Phrases By Vincenzo Brusantino, Pompeo Sarnelli, And John Florio, Daniela D'Eugenio
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation demonstrates how literary paremias, i.e. proverbs and proverbial phrases, constitute a rich archive of considerable historical, cultural, and linguistic significance. As discursive phenomena, paremias are usually studied in the context of oral traditions, but this study examines them in terms of what they reveal about the literary works in which they appear. Specifically, it analyzes the context in which they are employed and, through them, it extracts the author’s perspectives, references to and borrowings from previous works, responses to the social and cultural conditions of the time, and effects on the narrative. The exploration of paremias in literary …
W.E.B. Du Bois: Freedom, Race, And American Modernity, Elvira Basevich
W.E.B. Du Bois: Freedom, Race, And American Modernity, Elvira Basevich
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
My dissertation defends W.E.B. Du Bois’s philosophy of modern freedom, which he grounds in the historical reconstruction of the American civic community on the moral basis of free and equal citizenship. Rather than ascribe to him an elitist politics of racial ‘uplift’ and assimilation to Anglo- American folkways, I instead argue that he defends black moral and political autonomy for securing state power and civic equality. Additionally, he challenges both historical and the contemporary political philosophers, including John Rawls, Axel Honneth, and Philip Pettit, to articulate the racial dimension of the development of a social order that actualizes the moral …
Creating An Unbroken Line Of Becoming In Live Music Performance, Bonnie B. Mcalvin
Creating An Unbroken Line Of Becoming In Live Music Performance, Bonnie B. Mcalvin
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The dissertation provides an approach to the pedagogy of musical expression in applied music study. Exercises are provided which support a student’s mastery of the mechanics of grouping, and this mastery is put to work in an adaptation of the work of the great Russian acting teacher, Constantine Stanislavski. Mapping of embodiment schema in the manner of Lakoff and Johnson (1980) is asserted as a useful interface between grouped pitch objects and meaning; mappings are utilized by the instrumental music performer in the same manner as Stanislavski taught his acting students to utilize given circumstances. The discourse situates all of …
Posthumanist Animals In Art: France And Belgium, 1972-87, Arnaud Gerspacher
Posthumanist Animals In Art: France And Belgium, 1972-87, Arnaud Gerspacher
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation traces the changing role and increased importance of nonhuman animals in art of the 1970s and 80s. Focused largely on artists in France and Belgium, this period stands at the head of a wide-ranging re-conceptualization of animality that continues to unfold today. Pivotal moments in ecology (beginning with the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm), animal ethics and ethology (such as the Universal Declaration of Animal Rights proclaimed in 1978), and philosophy (specifically the biopolitical and deconstructive currents critiquing the centrality of the humanist subject), all converge as stress points along long held anthropocentric …

La Nación Está En Otra Parte: Cultura Y Neoliberalismo En México (1977-1996), Rafael Lemus
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation studies a series of cultural products and practices that, between 1977 and 1996, either contributed to the formation and propagation of a neoliberal rationality in Mexico or opposed it. By analyzing objects as diverse as cultural magazines, art exhibitions, literary polemics and social movements, it addresses the reconfiguration of the Mexican cultural field triggered by the neoliberal turn in the 1980s as well as the construction of a new national narrative intended to displace the old revolutionary tale and to rationalize and facilitate the insertion of the country into the global economy.
The first chapter focuses on the …
Evil And The Ontological Disproof, Carl J. Brownson Iii
Evil And The Ontological Disproof, Carl J. Brownson Iii
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is a revival of the ontological disproof, an ontological argument against the existence of God. The ontological disproof, in its original form, argues that God is impossible, because if God exists, he must exist necessarily, and necessary existence is impossible. The notion of necessary existence has been largely rehabilitated since this argument was first offered in 1948, and the argument has accordingly lost much of its force. I argue that the ontological disproof ought to be combined with the problem of evil, and that the resulting synthesis of the two arguments is far more powerful than either …

Circulation And Resemanticization: An Aporetic Palimpsest, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
Circulation And Resemanticization: An Aporetic Palimpsest, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
Artl@s Bulletin
Studies of the processes of resemanticization at work in artistic circulation are few and far between; attempts at articulating a theoretical understanding of such processes are rarer still. This paper will investigate the questions raised by a circulatory approach to the history of art, and review the methods and sources which can allow us to answer them. How is the meaning of a work of art conveyed? How is this meaning constituted, and how does it evolve across different places and moments? What are the factors that contribute to such changes? What are the possible consequences of artistic resemanticization? Are …
The Global History Of Art And The Challenge Of The Grand Narrative, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
The Global History Of Art And The Challenge Of The Grand Narrative, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
Artl@s Bulletin
It might seem rather early to propose an assessment of the famous ‘global turn’ in the history of art. However, the challenge of globalisation and of the ‘decolonization’ of our thought is now a daily preoccupation for many art historians. In order to propose a ‘global history’, one that would do justice to art from all continents, and in particular from those that have long been neglected and scorned, the ideal solution comes in the form of an articulation of a truly global narrative. Where could these new stories come from? We have sought to interrogate actors from the world …
