Pre-1824 Maps

This map by Miguel Costanzó depicts a West Coast region of New Spain (Nueva Españal) and the American frontier that extended from Cabo de Corrientes in New Spain to Cabo Blanco (the westernmost point in modern-day Oregon) and the Rio de los Reyes (River of the Kings) immediately to the north of Cabo Blanco. Motivated by news from Europe that the Russians and English were establishing themselves on the coasts of the North Pacific, Following January 1768 issuance of an order by the Viceroy Governor of New Spain, navigators who had previously explored the Sea of the South proceeded to …

Harming (Respectfully) Some To Benefit Others: Animal Rights And The Moral Imperative Of Trap-Neuter-Release Programs, Cheryl E. Abbate Sep 2017

Harming (Respectfully) Some To Benefit Others: Animal Rights And The Moral Imperative Of Trap-Neuter-Release Programs, Cheryl E. Abbate

Between the Species

Because spaying/neutering animals involves the harming of some animals in order to prevent harm to others, some ethicists, like David Boonin, argue that the philosophy of animal rights is committed to the view that spaying/neutering animals violates the respect principle and that Trap Neuter Release (TNR) programs are thus impermissible. In response, I demonstrate that the philosophy of animal rights holds that, under certain conditions, it is justified, and sometimes even obligatory, to cause harm to some animals (human or nonhuman) in order to prevent greater harm to others. As I will argue, causing lesser harm to some animals in …

Opera And Its Voices In Utah, Walter B. Rudolph Sep 2017

Opera And Its Voices In Utah, Walter B. Rudolph

Arrington Annual Lecture

The annual lecture honors Arrington, whose papers were donated to Utah State University’s Special Collections and Archives, a division in USU’s University Libraries. Part of the gift agreement was to offer an annual lecture on some facet of Mormon history.

“Opera initially did not cross the plains with the Mormon pioneers, nor did classical music,” Rudolph said. “But singing was a very important part of the pioneer heritage and everyday lives.”

Rudolph earned a bachelor’s in music and a master’s in musicology from Brigham Young University. He started a career in performance and teaching in the mid-1970s before turning to …

Clybourne Park Sep 2017

Clybourne Park

Taylor Theatre Playbills

The playbill for Taylor University’s performance of Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris.

Performed September 28-30, October 1, 2017 at the Mitchell Theatre.

Winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play, Clybourne Park is a razor-sharp satire about the politics of race. In 1959, Russ and Bev are moving to the suburbs after the tragic death of their son. Inadvertently, they’ve sold their house to the neighborhood’s first black family. Fifty years later, the roles are reversed when a young white couple buys the lot. In both instances a community showdown takes place, pitting race against …

Assessing Religious Orientations: Replication And Validation Of The Commitment-Reflectivity Circumplex (Crc) Model, Steven L. Isaak, Jesse R. James, Mary K. Radeke, Stephen W. Krauss, Keke L. Schuler, Eric R. Schuler

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The Commitment-Reflectivity Circumplex (CRC) model is a structural model of religious orientation that was designed to help organize and clarify measurement of foundational aspect of religiousness. The current study successfully replicated the CRC model using multidimensional scaling, and further evaluated the reliability, structure, and validity of their measures in both a university student sample (Study 1) and a nationally representative sample (Study 2). All 10 subscales of the Circumplex Religious Orientation Inventory (CROI) demonstrated good reliability across both samples. A two-week test-retest of the CROI showed that the subscales are stable over time. A confirmatory factor analysis of the CROI …

Prescriptive Methodology As A Generative Tool: A Case Study Conducted At Introductory Interior Design Studio Level In The United Arab Emirates, Lina Ahmad Sep 2017

Prescriptive Methodology As A Generative Tool: A Case Study Conducted At Introductory Interior Design Studio Level In The United Arab Emirates, Lina Ahmad

All Works

In the U.A.E. (United Arab Emirates), interior design education is often misunderstood as interior decoration, wherein the former is a more comprehensive design approach to spaces formed by structural boundaries and curation of human interaction. The conducted case study addressed a small number of students enrolled in Interior Design Studio I at Zayed University, Abu Dhabi campus. In addition to traditional teaching methods compromised of individual desk critique sessions, group pin-ups and presentations, three innovative methods were implemented as a means of guiding students through the process: direct sequential instruction executed within an assigned time frame, reflection on the surfaced …
