Reclaiming The Streets: Black Urban Insurgency And Antisocial Security In Twenty-First-Century Philadelphia, Jeff Maskovsky

This article focuses on the emergence of a new pattern of black urban insurgency emerging in major US metropolitan areas such as Philadelphia. I locate this pattern in the context of a new securitization regime that I call “antisocial security.” This regime works by establishing a decentered system of high-tech forms of surveillance and monitory techniques. I highlight the dialectic between the extension of antisocial security apparatuses and techniques into new political and social domains on the one hand and the adoption of these same techniques by those contesting racialized exclusions from urban public space on the other. However, these cinematic works are often left under-analyzed; there is much to be said about Dickensian adaptations. The Lost Generation was forced to develop their own principles regarding gender identity in an environment of ever-shifting cultural norms, which called into question all of their predetermined ideas on femininity, masculinity, and the ways in which members of the opposite sex should interact with one another. Although much of their writing is set amid and seems to embrace the evolving social culture of the early twentieth-century, F. The “madman’s” place throughout history has tended to be a mystery on both ontological and epistemological levels. From the perception of the madman as a crazed oracle in the sixteenth century to the perception of the madman as a criminal in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the nineteenth-century madman was even more difficult to define. Because insanity was deemed the inverse of bourgeois normativity and conservative moral standards, those categorized as mad in America during mid-1800s were institutionalized in reformed mental asylums, establishments which sought to homogenize human behavior through moral treatment. Around the world, municipalities are facing new challenges, not the least of which is climate change. This is especially true for rural communities that, for a variety of reasons, will be disproportionately affected by the climatic changes and accompanying policies or programs.

When a MacArthur grant-winning poet and classicist writes about her ex-lover, she doesn’t commit a “thick stacked act of revenge” against him, a tempting “vocation of anger” enacted on the page. Yet Anne Carson, author of “The Glass Essay” (from the collection Glass, Irony, and God), knows it’s “easier to tell a story of how people wound one another than of what binds them together.” It makes sense. The Limits Of Transparency: Data Brokers And Commodification, Matthew Crain

In the United States the prevailing public policy approach to mitigating the harms of internet surveillance is grounded in the liberal democratic value of transparency. While a laudable goal, transparency runs up against insurmountable structural constraints within the political economy of commercial surveillance. A case study of the data broker industry reveals the limits of transparency and shows that commodification of personal information is at the root of the power imbalances that transparency-based strategies of consumer empowerment seek to rectify. Despite significant challenges, privacy policy must be more centrally informed by a critical political economy of commercial surveillance.

Vowels Of Beryozovka Ewen: An Acoustic Phonetic Study, Kang Hijo, Yun Jiwon, Seongyeon Ko

This study acoustically analyzes 13,540 vowel tokens of Beryozovka Ewen with the aid of automated post-transcriptional processing technique. The focus of the analysis is on the acoustic correlates of [RTR], which is the harmonic feature of the language. In addition to the first three formants, acoustic values representing spectral tilt such as H1−H2, H1−A2, and B1 are measured as potential acoustic cues of [RTR]. The results show that F1, F3, and B1 are the most reliable cues of the feature and that H1− H2 and H1−A2 are nearly reliable. These acoustic cues are also shown to interact with length and …

This paper introduces Western readers to Japanese scholarship on late Qing and early Republican fiction and translation. It begins with a historical background on the development of modern Chinese literature studies in Japan, covering research societies, publications, and scholars in the field. Next, it discusses questions related to new directions in the study of the May Fourth Movement. Then, it addresses groundbreaking studies on writers and translators outside the main stream of research, covering Lin Shu, Liu Tieyun, and Li Boyuan. Further discussion examines thematic studies, including detective novels and Japanese political fiction.

This essay focuses on a previously obscure and only recently republished English text held at USC that offers an unparalleled window into Chang’s engagement with translation. The untitled manuscript, typed with handwritten additions and corrections, is contained in a folder marked “Untitled article or speech” and appears to be the script of an oral presentation in which Chang surveys the development of translation in China from the late-Qing period, through the 1911 revolution, the May Fourth period, the war with Japan, the 1949 revolution and the Cultural Revolution. This paper addresses the politics of language, identity, and diasporic Chinese writing in old and emerging Chinese migrant literature. I opt for the idea of a “migrant subject” as brought up by Ha Jin to underscore a diverse verbal strategy and mobile literary creativity: that of the migrant writer who initiates linguistic and literary perversions to actively intervene in the cultural politics of both the host country and the motherland. 本論文試從成長小說的角度，探討小說中白梅的女性意識，從遺失自我、自我意識醒覺到實踐自我的整個歷程，討論她如何逃離父權社會，建立自我，成為一個獨立個體。除了以成長小說理論分析白梅從妓女到母親的成長歷程，還會佐以弗洛伊德的精神分析學中的人格論和美國心理學家亞伯拉罕‧馬斯洛（Abraham Maslow）的需求層次理論，展示白梅的心理變化。接著，論文會討論白梅在父權社會下脫困的方式──成為給予男性生命的母親。

小說中可以看見處於社會底層的女性，即使生活在矛盾之中，受到社會壓迫，仍然嘗試掙脫求存。這正是黃春明筆下小人物的特色：雖然社會地位卑微，受盡屈辱，卻依然嘗試去解決問題。〈看海的日子〉歌頌了小人物白梅在強大的壓力下生存下去的毅力和精神。

提及李翰祥的風月片，總有評論家落入男性凝視（male gaze）的簡單批判。可見他們在李氏跨越七十至九十年代的《金瓶梅》風月片系列中，完全無視了女角色間的凝視、偷窺和偷聽。她們表面是忠於父權的妻子或僕人，暗地裡卻是偷窺得不亦樂乎繼而外遇的淫婦。李氏挪用原著的色情元素，以晚明資本主義下的道德失序，回應香港七十年代金錢至上、權威不受信任的意識。當時社會不再熱衷傳統倫理，投身於色情片熱潮中，因此觀眾享受的不單是李氏鏡頭下的美人，也是她們在凝視中拓展身分，主動開發情慾的反叛精神。她們甚至不怕男性凝視，最怕男性不凝視，因此搔首弄姿、嬌聲嬌氣，時而淫蕩，時而溫柔，讓至高無上的西門慶拜倒在她們裙下。

本文主要分析《風流韻事（蕙蓮篇）》（1973）、《金瓶雙艷》（1974）和《金瓶風月》（1991）中的四位女主角：金蓮、春梅、瓶兒和蕙蓮。探討李氏如何表現凝視間的陰性認同，並從女性間的認同分析她們對情慾的不同追求，如何（不）抗衡以西門作代表的父權，以一雙媚眼遊走於婚姻的曖昧地帶。

The Rise And Fall (And Rise Again) Of Vernacular Happiness, Haiyan Lee

This article delineates the vicissitudes of vernacular happiness in China across the crucial transitions of the early 20^th century. Traditionally, vernacular happiness was symbolized by a triune of gods, fu-lu-shou, standing for progeny, wealth, and longevity. Happiness was thus a matter of good fortune, ardently prayed for rather than programmatically pursued. The ruling elite patronized this folk cult of happiness through a discourse of virtue and benevolence, but were themselves inclined to pursue more transcendent goals (Dao, de) and refined pleasures (lequ).

Poetry + translation will trigger claims the size of office blocks, all the way from Robert Frost (censored here) to Eliot Weinberger (Poetry is that which is worth translating). Add Chinese to the mix, and things get even better.

The translation of poetry is fun to bounce around in conversation, but winds up frequently in dead-end discourse full of zombie notions of equivalence, faithfulness, servitude, and so on— not to mention the specter of the genre’s “inherent untranslatability.” In June 2017, a dozen scholars and translators held a workshop at Lingnan University, assuming primariness and agency for translation instead.
