Ahgottahandleonit, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2017

Ahgottahandleonit, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

Book cover and interior template I designed for Ahgottahandleonit by Donovan Mixon, published by Cinco Puntos Press. Tim, already two years behind in a Newark inner-city high school, will be a sophomore again if he doesn’t pass the English proficiency exam. He’s got good street cred, riffing strange rap-rhymes and running like the wind. Maria, a girl in his class, catches his eye, but he’s still thinking about his ex, Rene.At home, he’s packed into a 3-flat with his mom, sister and Uncle Gentrale. His father, a drunk, recently walked out on the family, wanting some “freedom.” He tells Tim, …

Murder On The Red River, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

Book cover and interior template I designed for Murder on the Red River by Marcie R. Rendon, published by Cinco Puntos Press.Cash and Sheriff Wheaton make for a strange partnership. He pulled her from her mother’s wrecked car when she was three. He’s kept an eye out for her ever since. It’s a tough place to live—that part of the world where the Red River divides Minnesota and North Dakota. Cash navigated through foster homes, and at 13 was working farms. She’s tough as nails—barely over five feet, jeans and jean jacket, smokes Marlboros, drinks Bud Longnecks. Makes her living …

From Winkelmann’S Apollo To Nietzsche’S Dionysus, Babette Babich Jan 2017

From Winkelmann’S Apollo To Nietzsche’S Dionysus, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

At issue here is the Platonic notion of imitation likewise associated with Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s reflection on the complex limits of painting and poetry, exemplar, archetype, ideal. Nietzsche himself echoes Schlegel’s own citation of Winckelmann in his comparison of Greek tragedy and sculpture, noting the ideal of beauty in balance, as tragic proportion. For August Wilhelm Schlegel, Aeschylus and Sophocles highlight the balance of tension between bodily dynamic poise and spiritual suffering in the case of the Laocoön group, where the boys to either side of the central figure draw the gaze back to the father: the very snakes themselves …

Narratives Of Change And Citizen Participation In Modern Political Campaigning: The Origins Of The Trump Movement, Sergey Medvedev Jan 2017

Narratives Of Change And Citizen Participation In Modern Political Campaigning: The Origins Of The Trump Movement, Sergey Medvedev

Journal Articles

This article offers insights into how the storytelling aspects of the Donald Trump presidential campaign of 2016 contributed to the rise of the Trump movement and paved his way to the White House. With 50 Trump speeches being analysed, the study reconstructs the narrative Donald Trump communicated to the target audience on his way to the highest office. Exploring the idea of Donald Trump as a storyteller, the article discusses how the ideology of the Trump base was constructed and an eagerness to participate was ignited by the narrative. Methodologically, the article derives the seven principles of political storytelling from …

Leonard Bagalwa, Leonard Bagalwa, Tsos

TSOS Interview Gallery

Leonard was forced to join the military at the age of 17 in his home country of the Congo. A Catholic priest smuggled me out of the country and I lived in refugee camps in several different countries until 2004 when he came to the United States.

In 2005, a couple came to Leonard when he was homeless in the Provo library. They found out that he needed help and offered to let me live with them. They ended up paying my tuition for my education and I went to college for five years.

Leonard uses his experiences to teach …

The Dark Pastoral: A Trope For The Anthropocene, Heather I. Sullivan Jan 2017

The Dark Pastoral: A Trope For The Anthropocene, Heather I. Sullivan

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Denoting our current age as the Anthropocene, or the era of planet-wide human impact, scales up human agency beyond the usual biological capacity of all living things to alter their surroundings to a geological force. Human activities have altered vast areas of the Earth's terrestrial surfaces, spread industrial particulates across the globe, and impacted the planetary climate with increased release of carbon dioxide that then increases oceanic acidity bleaching entire coral reefs. The biosphere's land, air, and water have all changed with the increased release and use of energy. Once again, a species of living things has become a large-scale …

'What Do You Want Me To Do For You?': Request And Relinquishment In Mark 10:35-52, Rebeccah Kay Buell Jan 2017

'What Do You Want Me To Do For You?': Request And Relinquishment In Mark 10:35-52, Rebeccah Kay Buell

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

The gospels are replete with examples of individuals who approach Jesus with a specific request. Not only are these requests welcomed, but Jesus also instructs his followers on the importance of asking (Matt. 7:7-11; Luke 11:9-13). However, we also see in the gospels that not every request that is brought to Jesus is answered affirmatively. Why, then, the emphasis on asking? Does making requests of Jesus play a larger role than simply receiving or not receiving that which has been requested?
This thesis examines two accounts from the gospel of Mark where Jesus is approached with a specific petition. One …

Evangelism And The Work Of Discipline In Congolese Perspective: 'Evangelism In Congolese Context', Zalema Kuedituka Jan 2017

Evangelism And The Work Of Discipline In Congolese Perspective: 'Evangelism In Congolese Context', Zalema Kuedituka

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the ways the Congolese people received the Gospel from Protestant missionaries from England. I will also discuss how Congolese Christians nurture the Gospel through their own perspectives via teaching, discipleship, living it, and practicing its principles of power. This evangelism, in the Congolese perspective, goes hand in hand with the interpretation of the “Christus Victor Model” of atonement developed by Aulen. This model stands for a victory over the powers of darkness that detain humankind in bondage to sin, death, and the Devil. Irenaeus has pointed out that the problems of sin, …

Racial-Trauma Informed Ministry: A Process For Dominant Culture Ministries To Effectively Engage With Communities Impacted By Racial Trauma, Teylar Greer Jan 2017

Racial-Trauma Informed Ministry: A Process For Dominant Culture Ministries To Effectively Engage With Communities Impacted By Racial Trauma, Teylar Greer

Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects

Though the dominant culture church in the United States exists within the context of racialized society, often the church has not directly addressed its unjust and traumatic effects. It is the theory of this project that with a more accurate understanding of racialized society, trauma, and coping behaviors, dominant culture ministries will engage more fully in the process of reconciliation. Therefore, this thesis seeks to lay out a theologically anchored process of reconciliation by which dominant culture ministries can be equipped to respond to experiences of racial injustice and trauma in ways that lead to and facilitate healing, justice, and …

Jesus-Immanuel: Matthew's Narrative Christology Of Divine Presence, Jacob Michael Carlson Jan 2017

Jesus-Immanuel: Matthew's Narrative Christology Of Divine Presence, Jacob Michael Carlson

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

Many Christological studies of Matthew’s Gospel, while giving particular attention to titular analyses, fail to account for one of Matthew’s most ingenious and expansive literary devices. In the opening chapter of his narrative, Matthew tells of a messiah who will be called “Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” and also be called “Immanuel, which means God with us.” The entire gospel narrative comes to a close with Jesus-Immanuel standing in the presence of his disciples and saying to them “I am with you always.” That Matthew frames his entire narrative with this Immanuel motif of divine …

Shaped By Calling: Establishing A Healthy Trajectory For Discipleship, Chuck J. Shocki Jan 2017

Shaped By Calling: Establishing A Healthy Trajectory For Discipleship, Chuck J. Shocki

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

The call of the first disciples reported in Mark 1:17 provides significant commentary on the essential attributes necessary for authentic life changing discipleship. In His words, "Follow Me and I will make you become fishers of men" Jesus establishes a paradigm for discipleship that is at once an invitation into a master/student relationship (i.e. "Follow me") that would engage his followers in a transformational process (i.e. "and I will make you become"), that would eventuate in their being shaped for a specific vocation (i.e. "fishers of men"). In this prototypical summons, these elements of following, becoming, and …

Hope In Addiction Recovery: Eschatological Foundations In Celebrate Recovery And The Genesis Process, Judith M. Naegeli Jan 2017

Hope In Addiction Recovery: Eschatological Foundations In Celebrate Recovery And The Genesis Process, Judith M. Naegeli

Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects

This project attempts to understand the theological foundations of two nationally known Christian addiction recovery programs currently operating in Seattle, Washington: Celebrate Recovery and The Genesis Process. Of particular focus is the presence or absence of Christianity’s unique sense of hope for the future, using eschatological themes of hope, resurrection, and shalom. The participant materials of each program were analyzed for their use of these themes, using Richard Osmer's framework of the four tasks of practical theology.

Review Of "Homer's Iliad: The Basel Commentary, Book Xix", Rachel H. Lesser Jan 2017

Review Of "Homer's Iliad: The Basel Commentary, Book Xix", Rachel H. Lesser

Ancient Greek and Roman Studies Faculty Publications

Marina Coray’s commentary on Iliad 19, originally published in German in 2009, is part of the ongoing Basel commentary series on Homer’s Iliad, edited by Anton Bierl and Joachim Latacz. So far thirteen volumes of the series have been published in German, and five in English translation. Coray’s commentary is a work of great erudition and will be an indispensable resource for scholars of Homer. Here I focus on the utility of this slightly revised new English edition for anglophone readers at various levels, and consider how this commentary relates to and supplements Mark W. Edwards’ outstanding commentary on …
