To Be Learned Is Good: Essays On Faith And Scholarship In Honor Of Richard Lyman Bushman, Spencer Fluhman, Kathleen Flake, Jed Woodworth

Maxwell Institute Publications

What does the future hold for Mormonism in the academy? How does personal faith impact one’s scholarship? How might scholarly women and men speak of faith in secular places and times? This volume contains vibrant exchanges on these and other questions from the memorable scholars’ colloquium held in honor of historian and Latter-day Saint Richard Lyman Bushman.

“I think we all feel some tension between our religious convictions and the secular times in which we live. In one way or another, modernism invades and unsettles our thinking, perhaps our thinking about our fields, perhaps our personal beliefs. What I …

An Xrf Compositional Analysis Of Opaque White Glass Beads From 17th-Century Mission Santa Catalina De Guale, Georgia, Elliot H. Blair Jan 2017

An Xrf Compositional Analysis Of Opaque White Glass Beads From 17th-Century Mission Santa Catalina De Guale, Georgia, Elliot H. Blair

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Previous analyses of the elemental composition of white glass beads have shown that the opacifier used during glass manufacture is temporally diagnostic, with a transition from tin to antimony to arsenic to fluorine. To date, most researchers using this fact for chronological purposes have focused on British, Dutch, and French contact sites in the northeastern United States and Canada. Many of these studies have relied on expensive, and sometimes minimally destructive, techniques. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry is a widely available, non-destructive technique that can be used to identify glass opacifiers extremely rapidly and inexpensively. This technique was used to analyze 783 …

Flying Woman’S Beaded Cheyenne Cradleboard And Associated Bead Card From Fort Keogh, Montana, William T. Billeck Jan 2017

Flying Woman’S Beaded Cheyenne Cradleboard And Associated Bead Card From Fort Keogh, Montana, William T. Billeck

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Glass bead sample cards were sent out in the 19th century by bead dealers and producers to illustrate their products and few are known that include small beads of drawn manufacture. One such card marked New York was acquired in 1882 by Captain Eli Lindesmith, a Catholic priest and Army chaplain at Fort Keogh, Montana. Lindesmith used the card to select seed beads for a cradleboard he commissioned that year from a Cheyenne woman named Flying Woman, the wife of Wolf Voice. This previously undescribed sample card is compared to other 19th-century cards displaying drawn beads in an attempt to …

Design Prototyping Methods: State Of The Art In Strategies, Techniques, And Guidelines, Bradley Camburn, Vimal Viswanathan, Julie Linsey, David Anderson, Daniel Jensen, Richard Crawford, Kevin Otto, Kristin Wood Jan 2017

Design Prototyping Methods: State Of The Art In Strategies, Techniques, And Guidelines, Bradley Camburn, Vimal Viswanathan, Julie Linsey, David Anderson, Daniel Jensen, Richard Crawford, Kevin Otto, Kristin Wood

Faculty Publications, Mechanical Engineering

Prototyping is interwoven with nearly all product, service, and systems development efforts. A prototype is a pre-production representation of some aspect of a concept or final design. Prototyping often predetermines a large portion of resource deployment in development and influences design project success. This review surveys literature sources in engineering, management, design science, and architecture. The study is focused around design prototyping for early stage design. Insights are synthesized from critical review of the literature: key objectives of prototyping, critical review of major techniques, relationships between techniques, and a strategy matrix to connect objectives to techniques. The review is supported …

The Intersections Of Africana Studies And Curriculum Theory: An Exploration, Theodorea Regina Berry Jan 2017

The Intersections Of Africana Studies And Curriculum Theory: An Exploration, Theodorea Regina Berry

Faculty Publications

There has been much critique of globalization now circulating in curriculum studies both nationally, in the United States, and internationally, helps us understand some of the lethal effects of globalization. Nevertheless, little of such critique is grounded in a strong commitment to work beyond the Western epistemological perimeter. While we, as reconceptualists in curriculum studies, acknowledge the necessity to honor the multiple sources and perspectives of knowledge, we continue to operate in spaces and with intentions embedded in globalized, traditional notions of curriculum. This problem is especially heightened for socially marginalized learners, particularly Black/African American learners.

In this article, I …

Breaking The Binary: Negotiating Space And Power In Course-Embedded Consulting, Courtnie Jude Morin Jan 2017

Breaking The Binary: Negotiating Space And Power In Course-Embedded Consulting, Courtnie Jude Morin

Online Theses and Dissertations

Course-Embedded (writing) Consultants (CECs) disrupt the common classroom power binary between the teacher and the student. Therefore, CECs must constantly negotiate authority and power in relation to their workspaces. Based on a Foucaultian analysis of power ideologies and spatial rhetoric, I propose a training series for instructors, CECs, and their students. This series allows participants on all three sides (teacher, CEC, and student) to recognize, analyze, and work within these dynamics of institutional structures of authority, pedagogy, and space.

27 Months Of Solitude: A Peace Corps Story, Christopher A. Gordon Jan 2017

27 Months Of Solitude: A Peace Corps Story, Christopher A. Gordon

Projects

In 2014, I was sent to Colombia’s Caribbean coast to serve as an English teacher through the Peace Corps. I spent two years teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) at both the elementary and secondary levels in Colombian public school settings, which included time in both urban and rural areas. Despite many hardships and setbacks, my experience in the Peace Corps was overwhelmingly positive. By teaching the alphabet at the elementary level, and focusing on vocabulary, test-taking strategies, and reading comprehension strategies at the secondary level, I was able to make a positive impact in public schools which had …

Considering "Disparate" Genealogies Analogously: A Survey Into The Histories Of Peer Response And Their Impact On Current Peer Response Practices, Laura P. Gorman Jan 2017

Considering "Disparate" Genealogies Analogously: A Survey Into The Histories Of Peer Response And Their Impact On Current Peer Response Practices, Laura P. Gorman

Projects

Peer response is a widely accepted pedagogical approach to teaching writing that goes unchallenged by contemporary compositionists. As a common pedagogical approach to teaching writing, there is a vast amount of scholarship written on the subject; nonetheless, there is a significant gap in the literature regarding unsuccessful narratives on peer response. For this reason, this project considers two seemingly disparate genealogies of peer response and reads them analogously. By reading two histories analogously that are typically positioned in opposition with one another, this project explores a broader definition of peer response and its purpose. The project’s analysis of peer response …

Abjection In Late Nineteenth Century British Literature, Robin A. Imholte Jan 2017

Abjection In Late Nineteenth Century British Literature, Robin A. Imholte

Projects

In this project, I examine three major British works of literature produced in the last two decades of the nineteenth century: Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure. I show that these works reflect popular trends and fears that arose during this time, including notions of decadence and fears of degeneration. Using Julia Kristeva’s conception of abjection, as described in her work Powers of Horror, I argue that developments throughout the Victorian era: namely the advent of the theory of evolution, the …

Levee Stories For An Expedited Reconnaissance Study, Kathleen C. Bromley Jan 2017

Levee Stories For An Expedited Reconnaissance Study, Kathleen C. Bromley

Projects

The coordination of earthen levees in Humboldt County, California known as the Redwood Creek Flood Control Project holds mistakes within its design and composition. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) admitted in studies conducted after the sculpture’s completion in 1968 that the levees extended too far into the creek’s estuary and this overreach has yet to be corrected. Poorly negotiated allowances of the levees into the transition zone caused the circulation of the vital water vein to compromise proper supportive nourishment for ecologic health. Economies such as fishing, farming, education and tourism surrounding the waterway have also suffered. …

La Música Popular Argentina Entre El Campo Y La Ciudad: Música Campera, Criolla, Nativa, Folklórica, Canción Federal Y Tango, Julia Chindemi Vila, P. Vila Jan 2017

La Música Popular Argentina Entre El Campo Y La Ciudad: Música Campera, Criolla, Nativa, Folklórica, Canción Federal Y Tango, Julia Chindemi Vila, P. Vila

Spanish Faculty Works

In the early twentieth century tango functioned as an important cultural artifact in defense of the integration of the newly arrived European immigrants into the nation. Until it achieved its hegemony in the late 1930s, tango shared popularity with the so-called “canción criolla” (creole song), which commercially competed with great success until the mid-1930s. This type of music was the traditional music of the gaucho, who while physically disappearing from the countryside, was symbolically reinstated as the core of Argentine nationality by the “criollista” movement, promoted by the Argentine elite. At that time tango continuously mix, in a very complex …

The Flick (2017) - Lighting

The realistic environment, story, dialogue, and characters fed the ideas of light that would help tell this story. Later in the show, the movie theater called “The Flick” is taken under new ownership and is remodeled into “The Venue.” Changes in color accents and temperature of light within the theater provided us with the larger visual switch and passage of time that happens towards the last quarter of the play.

Journey's End (2017) - Lighting

The lighting design for Journey's End needed to create the dark and claustrophobic environment of a war dug-out. Candles from low angles and slivers of natural light that could barely penetrate the dug-outs were the only sources of illumination. The high-contrast world that was composed only added to the hell that these soldiers endured.

Cerberus At The Gates: The Demonization Of The French Female Concierge, Mariah Devereux Herbeck

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

Located at the threshold of modern Parisian apartment living, the concierge maintains the common spaces, delivers mail and, until 1957, "pulled the cord" to permit dwellers to enter the building at all hours of the night. Neither owner of nor renter in the building that she tends, the concierge occupies the first-floor loge – a liminal space that is neither entirely public nor truly private – where she simultaneously lives and works. In the nineteenth century, the concierge was often poor and uneducated, yet influential thanks in great part to her post at the front door: "She was feared because …
