Is Online Learning Suitable For All English Language Students?, Settha Kuama, Usa Intharaksa
PASAA
This study aimed to examine online language learning strategies (OLLS) used and affection in online learning of successful and unsuccessful online language students and investigate the relationships between OLLS use, affection in online learning and online English learning outcomes. The participants included 346 university students completing a compulsory online English course. Based on the grade results at the end of the course, the participants were divided into two groups: successful online language students (SLs, n=262) and unsuccessful online language students (ULs, n=84). Participants rated their use of three OLLS: cognitive, metacognitive, resource management, and rated their perceptions of affection in …

The Practice Of "Grammar Naziness" On Facebook In Relation To Generating Grammar Learning: A Motivation Or Demotivation In Updating Statuses In English On Facebook, Noraziah Mohd Amin, Noor Azam Abdul, Mohamad-Noor Sharipudin, Mohd Saifulnizam Abu Bakar

It is common for learners of English to make grammatical errors in their English Facebook posts that can be noticeable on their walls, which this perhaps as a result, influences the other Facebook users who know about the language to perform the unofficial duty as grammar Nazis and correct the errors. Thus, this research aims to examine if Malay learners of English from UiTM are motivated or demotivated to practice their English on Facebook by posting more statuses in English after receiving corrective feedback from their Facebook friends who act as grammar Nazis. Since the learners are aware that there …

Mercy And Business: A Partnership For Catholic University Business Students, Arlene J. Nicholas
Mercy And Business: A Partnership For Catholic University Business Students, Arlene J. Nicholas
Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers
A university mission that reflects mercy and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition can be integrated into business courses. Critical to this integration is the willingness of students to embrace concepts such as fairness and mercy, as part of their lives beyond academia; that caring for others is inclusive in business and private life. Some examples in management courses include; the protection from harassment or disenfranchisement of any ethnic, economic or lifestyle differences; fairness of applications, interviews and testing, and opportunities for training and promotions. In all business courses, the understanding of cultural dimensions and respect for others are emphasized.

What would it mean to understand the essence of a discipline? What would it meant to find the center of poetry? I argue in the introduction to this thesis that poetry has no center. One cannot come to know the capital “T” truth of poetry. Our language is too unstable, our intentions too vast, and our experiences are too varied. Thus, I interrogate what this might mean for the writer and the poetic experience more generally. By doing this, I ultimately interrogate what this means for me. However, I also accept T.S. Eliot’s claim that mature poetry has the unique …

Bridging The Gap: A Study Of Artistic Research In Composition In Flanders, Hans Roels
Bridging The Gap: A Study Of Artistic Research In Composition In Flanders, Hans Roels
Journal of Urban Culture Research
In this article an exploratory study of artistic research in music composition in Flanders (Belgium) is presented. More specifically, the interaction between artistic practice and research in master and doctoral research projects is examined. The results indicate that there are three gaps, one between the discourses on artistic research and results of artistic researchers on the other, another between the artistic practice and the research part and a last one between master and postmaster research. Next the author makes proposals to tackle these problems, improve the dissemination of research outputs and suggests to focus on a shared environment for composition …
Between Rome And The Sea: Ancient And Recent Gateways To The Eternal City, Lina Malfona
Between Rome And The Sea: Ancient And Recent Gateways To The Eternal City, Lina Malfona
Journal of Urban Culture Research
While traveling through the flat expanse stretching over its southwestern area, it is possible to see the unusual image of Rome as a city that overlooks the sea. In this area, rich of landfalls, many buildings act as gateways, some of which of international relevance, such as the "Leonardo da Vinci" intercontinental airport. Others accesses are only imagined by architects, from Karl Friedrich Schinkel's Laurentinum - his reconstruction of Plinius's Villa - to Adalberto Libera's projects both for the seafront of Castel Fusano and for the Gateway to Sea. Over all, the ancient seaport of Rome is a potential engine …
Rural - Urban Boundaries In Contemporary Vietnamese Cinema: A Look From Phan Dang Di's Films, Hoang Cam Giang
Rural - Urban Boundaries In Contemporary Vietnamese Cinema: A Look From Phan Dang Di's Films, Hoang Cam Giang
Journal of Urban Culture Research
In traditional Vietnamese movie (before 2000), rural and urban areas are often depicted by cinematic stereotypes as absolutely separated and differentiated territories. Also, people living in these two spaces are often represented by contrasted traits, for example, rural people are naïve, while urban people are sophisticated or sometimes, disrupted. But in contemporary Vietnamese cinema, rural and urban areas have been "de-territorialized". The distinctions between the two spaces have been blurred, especially in the films made by young directors. Vietnamese films which are made in recent years show clearly that the personality of people are not sharply characterized according to their …

The Effect Of Military Service On Indian Communities In Southern New England, 1740–1763, Brian D. Carroll
The Effect Of Military Service On Indian Communities In Southern New England, 1740–1763, Brian D. Carroll
History Faculty Scholarship
Military sources combined with existing ethnohistorical narratives about the experience of Algonquian groups living ‘behind the frontier’ in colonial southern New England provide insight into the impact of imperial warfare on Indian peoples. Virtually every indigenous male in the region after King Philip’s War served in the colonial military. Tribes used the service of their men as leverage in negotiations with colonial governments as they attempted to advance their own agendas and protect their sovereignty. Yet Indian soldiers died in large numbers, mainly from infectious disease. Death rates for Indian soldiers were so high that it affected tribal demographics and …

Phonetic Shift /Ɔr/ Phonemic Change? American English Mergers Over 40 Years, Joseph A. Stanley, Margaret E. L. Renwick
Faculty Publications
In this paper we analyze the vowel formants of a speaker over four decades to show phonemic change through time. Other real-time studies (Harrington, Palethorpe & Watson 2000; Harrington & Reubold 2015) have found that the vowel spaces of UK English speakers shift over the lifetime, likely as a consequence of interaction with speakers of other dialects or social classes. We focus on an understudied variety of English, spoken in the western United States, to investigate a pair of phonological mergers, the cord-card merger and the hoarse-horse merger.
Reclaiming The Land: Indigenous Articulations Of Environmentalism At Bears Ears, Caroline K. Goodman
Reclaiming The Land: Indigenous Articulations Of Environmentalism At Bears Ears, Caroline K. Goodman
American Studies ETDs
This thesis explores how an inter-tribal coalition in Southern Utah is strategically mobilizing environmental ethics in order to guarantee access to tribal homelands. Facing serious threat from Anglo communities in Utah who use race and religion to produce themselves as the authentic local population, the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition forges new kinds of alliances with environmental groups and appropriates conservation and preservation ethics in order to reclaim the land. Indigenous articulations of environmentalism at Bears Ears disrupt the colonial temporal and spatial logics that undergird dominant American imaginaries of wilderness and antiquity, reattaching Native peoples to the land by centering …
I Dreamed In Terms Of Novels: Dorothy Day And The Ethics Of Nineteenth-Century Literature, Katherine Thomsen Pierson
I Dreamed In Terms Of Novels: Dorothy Day And The Ethics Of Nineteenth-Century Literature, Katherine Thomsen Pierson
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
To the extent that she is known, Dorothy Day, a twentieth-century American Catholic journalist and social reformer currently under consideration for sainthood by the Vatican, is recognized for her religious influences. Pope Francis, in his 2015 speech before the American Congress, said she was inspired by “the Gospel, her faith, and the example of the saints.” Yet throughout her life Day was a consistent reader of secular texts and even said she “lived by” the vision of some of her favorite writers. This thesis examines Day’s secular influences—in particular Dickens’s David Copperfield and Little Dorrit—and begins to trace their …

Transcription And Translation Of A Letter From The Japonica Sinica 85 Of The Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu, Serena Rachelle Terrazas
Theses and Dissertations
This project is a transcription and translation of a letter from the Japonica Sinica 85 collection of the Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu. It was written by an unidentified Jesuit who recounts three years of history (1655-1657) of the Tonkin kingdom (in present-day Vietnam), replacing the annual letters from those years that had been lost at sea. The account includes descriptions of their wars with Cochinchina, the succession of the kingship, and the funeral and burial of the Lê-Triṇh lord, Triṇh Tráng.
The Effect Of Orthodontic Appliances On The Evaluation Of The Professionalism And Esthetics Of An Adult Employee, Laura Hanson Vaccariello
The Effect Of Orthodontic Appliances On The Evaluation Of The Professionalism And Esthetics Of An Adult Employee, Laura Hanson Vaccariello
Master's Theses (2009 -)
This study explored the influence of fixed and removable orthodontic appliances on participants’ ratings of the job performance, intelligence, and attractiveness of an adult female. Ninety-four adult subjects were recruited from the Graduate School of Management at Marquette University. Each subject received an identical employee performance review with an attached photograph of a female employee. The smile of the photo was manipulated to represent one of four conditions: no orthodontic appliance, a metal orthodontic appliance, a ceramic orthodontic appliance, or a clear aligner. Subjects then rated the employee on three continuous Likert scales. Ratings of job performance, intelligence, and attractiveness …

Aeschylus And National Socialism: Lothar Müthel's Orestie As Nazi Propaganda, Rachel Elizabeth Maxwell
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes the text, stage design, and historical context of Lothar Müthel's production of Aeschylus's Oresteia trilogy in 1936, which was sponsored by the National Socialist government during a broader publicity campaign during the Summer Olympics of 1936. The third play, Eumenides (Die Versöhnung in German) has democratic undertones, and therefore seems incompatible with Nazi ideology at first glance. There are three ways in which the Nazis made Müthel's adaptation of Die Versöhnung compatible. First, in the context of the Olympics, the Nazis attempted to draw a connection or relationship between modern German and ancient Greek culture, implying themselves …
Integrators Of Design: Parsi Patronage Of Bombay's Architectural Ornament, Nicole Ashley Vance
Integrators Of Design: Parsi Patronage Of Bombay's Architectural Ornament, Nicole Ashley Vance
Theses and Dissertations
The seaport of Bombay is often referred to as India's "Gothic City." Reminders of British colonial rule are seen throughout South Bombay in its Victorian architecture and sculpture. In the heart of Bombay lies the Victoria Terminus, a towering, hybrid railway station blending gothic and vernacular architectures. Built at the height of the British Empire, the terminus is evidence of the rapid modernization of Bombay through the philanthropy of the Parsis. This religious and ethnic minority became quick allies to the British Raj; their generous donations funded the construction of the "Gothic City." The British viewed the Parsis as their …

Teaching Digital Humanities Through A Community-Centered, Team-Based Pedagogy, Elizabeth M. Lorang, Andrew Jewell
Teaching Digital Humanities Through A Community-Centered, Team-Based Pedagogy, Elizabeth M. Lorang, Andrew Jewell
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations
Through a focus on the Digital Humanities Practicum course at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), this paper explores two areas of current--and recurrent--interest in digital humanities teaching and learning: DH pedagogy in the undergraduate classroom and DH and "skills training." While the presentation emphasizes particulars of the course, including its design, what has worked well, and what we are still learning, we also want to think beyond the single course and prompt further discussion around several themes, including team-based problem-solving and connecting digital humanities with community-engaged learning. Ultimately, we argue that a team-based, community-engaged approach can be an effective strategy …

This interview sits alongside an extended version edited for Amanda Curreri’s solo exhibition, The Calmest of Us Would be lunatics, which took place from January 21–May 8, 2016, at Rochester Art Center, in Rochester, Minnesota. Curreri dug through the archival collection of the Daughters of Bilitis, the first lesbian organization in the country, and their journal, The ladder, at the Tretter Collection in LGBT Studies at the University of Minnesota. The exhibition is titled after a line in Emily Dickinson’s 1877 letter to Elizabeth Holland which reads, “Had we the first intimation of the Definition of Life, the calmest of …
