Cultivating A Learner’S Stance For Engagement In Teacher-Inquiry: An Aim For Writing Pedagogy Education, Jessica Rivera-Mueller Jul 2016

Cultivating A Learner’S Stance For Engagement In Teacher-Inquiry: An Aim For Writing Pedagogy Education, Jessica Rivera-Mueller

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation argues that writing teacher educators (WTEs) can more purposefully advance their commitment to sponsoring inquiry-oriented teacher development by helping pre-service and practicing writing teachers examine how they are developing as inquirers. Building from scholarship in Composition and English Education and the findings from a narrative-based qualitative study that included four secondary and post-secondary teachers of writing, I have named this attention to how teachers learn and grow their inquiry processes a learner’s stance for engagement in teacher-inquiry. This stance is a readiness to see and engage professional work with an eye toward growing one’s ability to engage …

Yung-Yi Tseng

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Jing Chen

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Traditional And Non-Traditional Storytellers In Modern Japanese Societies, Yoko Takashima Jul 2016

Traditional And Non-Traditional Storytellers In Modern Japanese Societies, Yoko Takashima

Journal of Urban Culture Research

In Japan, the tradition of storytelling no longer exists in rural communities; thus, it is increasingly difficult to find traditional storytellers who have heard folktales passed down over generations. However, new storytelling is activated by both traditional and contemporary (non-traditional) storytellers who tell stories learned through reading books. In rural areas, a small number of traditional storytellers tell folktales to tourists at tourism facilities, while in urban cities, contemporary storytellers tell stories and folktales to children in libraries, schools and other community facilities. Their activities greatly contribute to the vitalization of folktales; nonetheless, there are some challenges. Both types of …

In September 2005, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published a series of cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad, including one in which a bomb was hidden under his turban. According to the paper’s cultural editor, Flemming Rose, the cartoons were an exercise in free speech, a value prized in liberal democracies. For him, fear of retaliation from Muslims was leading to self-censorship among Danish authors and artists. Muslim groups protested the cartoons not only within Denmark but also around the world, some of which turned violent. To their minds, the prophet (and members of their faith) had been defamed. Cases like this …

The Problem Of Authority In Conservative Evangelical Christianity: A Critique Of American And South Korean Expressions, Harold Arthur Brower Iv Jul 2016

The Problem Of Authority In Conservative Evangelical Christianity: A Critique Of American And South Korean Expressions, Harold Arthur Brower Iv

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis explores and compares the ways in which the Bible is read, interpreted, and held as an authority by conservative Evangelicals in the United States and South Korea. By examining the history, literary practices, and social systems in each country, I reveal authorities other than the Bible that emerge from Evangelical culture. Discourse theory, reader-response theory, and rhetorical criticism provide the theoretical lenses through which each expression is viewed. My research strategies included: (1) a six month ethnographic project held in two Korean Evangelical communities; and (2) a survey of Korean laity. Data were collected from direct observations, Evangelical …

The Visual Rhetoric Of Royalty, Barbara Joann Anderson Jul 2016

The Visual Rhetoric Of Royalty, Barbara Joann Anderson

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis examines how three British female royals, Queen Elizabeth II, Diana Princess of Wales, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, use visual rhetoric to gain and maintain power in a world where they are rarely allowed to use their actual voices. The female royals use photographs to convey their messages and gain support from the public. Elizabeth's visual agenda of androgyny allows her to gain the authority that her role of sovereign requires, while Diana used pathos to create a connection with a public to emphasize that she was the people's princess. Following their leads, Catherine is learning to use …

The Cradle Of Democracy And The Longue Durée Of A Crisis: Some Thoughts From The Perspective Of Historical Sociology, Despina Lalaki Jul 2016

The Cradle Of Democracy And The Longue Durée Of A Crisis: Some Thoughts From The Perspective Of Historical Sociology, Despina Lalaki

Publications and Research

The relationship between Modern Greece and the West has always been a complex and tortuous one. Greece as “the cradle of democracy” – a construct at the intersection of western modernity’s political imaginary and Greek national identity – a terribly familiar and powerful cliché which to a great extent, still today, informs our imagination and politics has been at the heart of this relationship. It is rather a truism to suggest that democracy lies at the political core of the civilization that the West insists offering to the rest of the world, yet we tend to forget that this is …

The Umbrella Movement And The Political Apparatus: Understanding "One Country, Two Systems", Justin Kh Tse Jul 2016

The Umbrella Movement And The Political Apparatus: Understanding "One Country, Two Systems", Justin Kh Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Prior to the Umbrella Movement, there was little reason for people who were not from Hong Kong to care much about its politics, unless, of course, one were a devoted reader of The Economist, which did cover Hong Kong as a former British colony. Alas, my experience in the academy corroborates the former sentiment: when I began studying Christian involvement in Hong Kong’s politics in the late 2000s, nobody was interested. “You have to study Christianity in China,” one advisor said, “because that’s where the jobs are.” The growth of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), especially the explosion of …

What Can State Talk Tell Us About Punitiveness? A Comparison Of Responses To Political Mass Shootings In The United States And Norway, Kimberlee G. Waggoner Jul 2016

What Can State Talk Tell Us About Punitiveness? A Comparison Of Responses To Political Mass Shootings In The United States And Norway, Kimberlee G. Waggoner

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

Highlighting the culturally contingent nature of state reactions to crime, the present work focuses on state talk issued by the U.S. and Norwegian governments in the aftermath of politically motivated mass shootings. The research is guided by the question: how does state talk—conditioned by economic, political, and cultural forces—facilitate or constrain punitive responses to political mass shootings? Here, the focus is on the January 8th 2011 shooting of U.S. representative Gabrielle Giffords and her constituents and the July 22nd 2011 bombing of a government building and shooting of a youth political camp in Norway. These two cases illustrate how state …

Discoloration Of A Green Pigment In Tintoretto’S Allegorical Figure Of Spring And Analysis Of The Chemical Properties And Stability Of Copper Resinate, Sarah Wells Conner Horn Jul 2016

Discoloration Of A Green Pigment In Tintoretto’S Allegorical Figure Of Spring And Analysis Of The Chemical Properties And Stability Of Copper Resinate, Sarah Wells Conner Horn

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The focus of this thesis is the discoloration of a common historical green pigment, copper resinate. In this research the discoloration was investigated in Jacopo Tintoretto’s painting, Allegorical Figure of Spring, painted c. 1555. This painting is believed to have been painted with copper resinate which has discolored to brown over the centuries. The state of repair of the painting was determined using visual analysis under visible and UV light and the use of copper green pigments was confirmed using energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence, including copper resinate based upon supplementary historical evidence. Substantial evidence was found from visual inspection and …

International Communication: The Effect Of Culture On The Content, Organization, And Design Of Nonprofit Annual Reports, Lia Blanchard Jul 2016

International Communication: The Effect Of Culture On The Content, Organization, And Design Of Nonprofit Annual Reports, Lia Blanchard

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

A professional document must convey information with a high degree of readability and usability. The inclusion of visual rhetoric, the transformation of technical writing from product-oriented to user-oriented information, the development of Simplified Technical English, and the adoption of plain writing practices are all steps toward communicating effectively in today’s “postnational” world. Continued evolution requires a deeper understanding of cultural differences—acknowledging not only differing symbols, heroes, and rituals, but the values that inspire them. This study examines the content, organization, and design of two nonprofit annual reports produced in 2013: one from the Russian Federation and one from the United …

The Case For Prioritism: Part 2, Christopher R. Little Jul 2016

The Case For Prioritism: Part 2, Christopher R. Little

Great Commission Research Journal

Debate is no stranger to evangelicalism. Rigorous dialogue among evangelicals ought to be welcomed as it clarifies issues, forms convictions, and sets agendas. The missiological disagreement between prioritists and holists is a case in point. Prioritists feel constrained to redress holistic reconfigurations of such fundamental concepts as gospel, kingdom, and mission. For the sake of the nations, this article seeks to compare and contrast prioritism with holism, trace the historical emergence of evangelical holism, offer reasons why prioritism more accurately represents a biblically informed approach to mission, and concludes with means by which readers can determine which viewpoint to affirm …

Understanding Diversification In The Church Growth Movement, Christopher Divietro Jul 2016

Understanding Diversification In The Church Growth Movement, Christopher Divietro

Great Commission Research Journal

Donald McGavran observed isolationist tendencies in the church and proposed both methodological consistency and sociological analysis as factors critical to evangelistic success. Later, church growth thinkers devolved into a syncretistic pragmatism that, over time, rendered the church as irrelevant as the church McGavran sought to combat. I synthesize various strands running through the history of the Church Growth Movement and isolate contributing factors to diversification through critical interaction with a contemporary of Donald McGavran—Lesslie Newbigin. Newbigin’s understanding of the relationships among gospel, church, and culture serves as the foundation for understanding how a church can slip into a position of …

This article follows his story of planting fifteen churches, seeing new believers come to faith in Christ, and the further developing of his principles of church growth.

(Re)Presenting Peoples And Storied Lands: Public Presentation Of Archaeology And Representation Of Native Americans In Selected Western U.S. Protected Areas, Cerinda Survant

Dissertations and Theses

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people visit the Native American ancestral lands in the western United States developed for tourism and recreation. The stewards of these lands seek to engage visitors and enrich their experience, and simultaneously to protect the lands' natural and cultural resources. To achieve their mission, protected areas regularly use interpretation -- materials and experiences that aim to educate visitors about resources and see them as personally meaningful. However, there is little literature on interpretive content in protected areas, few qualitative studies of interpretation as constructed by visitors and interpreters, and little literature on the representation …

Testing University Learners' Interlanguage Pragmatic Competence In A Chinese Efl Context, Lan Xu, Anchalee Wannaruk Jul 2016

Testing University Learners' Interlanguage Pragmatic Competence In A Chinese Efl Context, Lan Xu, Anchalee Wannaruk

PASAA

Speech acts are the major concern of interlanguage pragmatists. The present study aimed to 1) examine the reliability and validity of an interlanguage pragmatic (ILP) competence test on speech acts in a Chinese EFL context, and 2) investigate EFL learners' variations of ILP competence by language proficiency. Altogether 390 students participated in the present study. The students were divided into three groups based on their language proficiency. The data were collected with an ILP competence test and semi-structured interviews. The ILP competence test was in the form of a written discourse completion task (WDCT), including ten speech acts and 30 …

Development And Use Of A Corpus Tailored For Legal English Learning, Jason Skier, Jutarat Vibulphol Jul 2016

Development And Use Of A Corpus Tailored For Legal English Learning, Jason Skier, Jutarat Vibulphol

PASAA

While corpus linguistics has been applied towards many specific academic purposes, reports are few regarding its use to facilitate learning of legal English by non-native English speakers. Specialized corpora are required because legal English often differs significantly from ordinary usage, with words such as bar, motion, and hearing having completely different meanings and use. This paper documents the process of creating and validating a sixteen million-word corpus of (American) legal English, and provides examples of analyses available for language learners. Written decisions and oral argument transcripts from the U.S. Supreme Court and other appellate courts were ultimately chosen to comprise …

Teaching The Vocabulary Of Citation: Action Research In A Southeast Asian Context, Jena Lynch

PASAA

This action research project sought to investigate the role of explicit citation vocabulary instruction in the learning of citation style guidelines for an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) writing course at an Englishmedium university in Northern Thailand. The participants consisted of 120 undergraduate students enrolled in the EAP writing class who were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The class included a step-by-step essay writing assignment that included source selection and use of quoted material from sources. Participants in the experimental group were exposed to a multi-week treatment in which citation vocabulary terms were reviewed in subsequent …
