Book Review: 100 Questions (And Answers) About Qualitative Research, Sirawit Apairach
PASAA
Given, L. M. (2016). 100 Questions (and Answers) About Qualitative Research. California: SAGE Publications As researchers, scholars, professors, or educators, both new and experienced, we all seek to understand a myriad of occurrences, oftentimes with an attempt to tackle pressing and emerging problems or even improve our knowledge by means of research. If our aims are to observe or explore human-related issues and experiences and to deepen our understanding about them, qualitative research is, then, an effective approach to study these inquiries we pose. However, to familiarize oneself with qualitative research can be quite perplexing for those who are new …
Blinded Eyes And Hardened Hearts: Intra-Jewish Critique In The Gospel Of John, Nathan Thiel
Blinded Eyes And Hardened Hearts: Intra-Jewish Critique In The Gospel Of John, Nathan Thiel
Dissertations (1934 -)
According to the dictum of C. K. Barrett, the Gospel of John is both Jewish and anti-Jewish. That is, alongside the Gospel’s pervasive appeal to Israel’s Scriptures and traditions stands trenchant criticism of those whom the evangelist refers to as “the Jews” (οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι). That the censure is so often directed toward them with a seeming lack of inner differentiation has suggested to many that the Gospel witnesses to a religious schism. Ethnically Jewish believers in Jesus, having been banned from the synagogue for their faith, renounced their own identity as Jews. What began as an intra-Jewish dispute now bore …

Historical And Cultural Implications Of Bogomilism, Maja Angelovska, Ruzhica Cacanoska
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Bogomilism represents a spiritual manifestation, dualistic in nature, of a religious expression, and a social and philosophical orientation. The essence of Bogomilism can be followed on the basis of several key postulates, such as dualism, a specific theological and dogmatic characteristic, the support of ethical principles within their social life, and finally the political dimension of teaching the determinants which rise from the overall social and political processes in medieval times. The aim of this article is to present the historical and cultural aspects of this movement, which left visible traces in the spiritual culture of Macedonia, Balkans, and Byzantium.

Embracing Multiplicity: Autobiographical Personae In Ruth Hall, Gina Marie Schneck
Embracing Multiplicity: Autobiographical Personae In Ruth Hall, Gina Marie Schneck
Theses and Dissertations
Sara Payson Willis Eldredge Farrington Parton, more famously known as the elusive Fanny Fern, employs three autobiographical personae mediated by fiction in her debut novel, Ruth Hall: (1) Ruth Hall, the novel's protagonist; (2) Floy, the fictional Ruth's pseudonym; and (3) Fanny Fern, Parton's real-life pseudonym and the name under which Ruth Hall was published. Together these personae assert a fragmented presence that incorporates various voices and lives, allowing for exploration, growth, and interactivity.Philippe Lejeune's autobiographical contract outlines three specific guidelines for autobiography—that it be a narrative, that it explore personal history, and that it link author and protagonist. Ruth …

The goal is to clarify the similaritiesand differencesbetweenthese Dhanurvedas and to discover the roles and functions of the literatures. Upon examining the texts, it becomes clear that Agni Purāṇa Dhanurvedais uncategorizedand unordered. Some verses reveal the absence of existing then-contemporary knowledge and otherslead to skepticism on practicality. Thus, this Dhanurvedais likely to be a collection of archery science compiled together without editing, mainly to preserve the wisdom rather than to expressit. On the contrary, Śārṅgadharapaddhati Dhanurvedais much more organized. …

Northern Khmer speakers in the southern part of Northeastern Thailand own several cultural components which express their group identity. The most well-known one is Kantruem song. General Kantruem lyrics, usually composed in Northern Khmer language, are about love, happiness and sorrow, and moral instruction. From approximately 2002 onwards, have emerged the inexperienced Kantruem lyrics, still in Northern Khmer language, concerning Saen Don Ta, the tradition which highlights the core of Northern Khmer culture. This paper aims at examining Northern Khmer speakers' identities through these special data, and the factors influencing the production of these new lyrics and the identifications. The …

Thai Learners' Problems In Translating Thai Serial Verb Constructions Into English(ปัญหาการแปลหน่วยสร้างกริยาเรียงภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษของผู้เรียนชาวไทย), Somjit Jirananthiporn, Prima Mallikamas
Journal of Letters
The aim of the study is to investigate a major problem Thai learners have in translating serial verb constructions into English. Although Thai serial verb constructions can be used to express various kinds of actions, only some are hypothesized to be relatively more difficult for Thai students to translate. The data was collected from translation exercises and analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively to identify the most problematic type of serial verb constructions. The study reveals that sequential and simultaneous serializations are more problematic than constructions in which the order of the two verbs expresses the same concepts in both languages. …

Journal of Letters
Apology is a speech act that has been widely studied during the past 15 years. Nevertheless, the focus of such studies has been on interpersonal apologies, never on the apologies made by public figures through the media. This article aims to conduct a pragmatics study of the apology techniques of Thai politicians on public media. The data used in the research includes 33 speech act sets of politicians' apologies on public media from 2011 to 2015. The research reveals that the politicians' apologies are broadcasted to the public via five channels which are 1) press conferences, 2) government's radio/television programs, …
Old And New Gods In An Age Of Uncertainty: Mixed Content Tales In Lebor Na Huidre, Eric Patterson
Old And New Gods In An Age Of Uncertainty: Mixed Content Tales In Lebor Na Huidre, Eric Patterson
Masters Theses
This thesis will demonstrate that the mixed pagan and Christian content of LU, as examined through two selected exemplar tales, provides evidence of the unique merger of politics and religion in the localized setting of late eleventh century Clonmacnoise. Further, and more specifically, we will see that the mBocht family, influenced by its 2 participation in the Céli Dé movement and seeking to protect the societal standing and holdings of themselves and their monastery, used portions of these tales to send subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, messages to the Irish Church, to chieftains and kings across Ireland, and specifically …

Globalization And Possibilities For Intercultural Awareness: Multimodal Arabic Culture Portfolios At A Catholic University, Sawsan Abbadi
Globalization And Possibilities For Intercultural Awareness: Multimodal Arabic Culture Portfolios At A Catholic University, Sawsan Abbadi
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This case study explores the teaching and learning of Arabic at one Catholic university campus, with a focus upon the complex interactions between language and culture in a postmodern globalized context. Specifically, it examines the use of “multimodal culture portfolios” as a means to engage students both linguistically and culturally in classroom and community discourses. Through their interactions and co-construction of knowledge with other participants, these students are led to think about the multiple communicative contexts that are shaping and being shaped by them. Data collection was conducted through survey questionnaires and students' responses to the assigned culture portfolio. The …
Identity Creation And World-Building Through Discourse In Video Game Narratives, Barbara Jedruszczak
Identity Creation And World-Building Through Discourse In Video Game Narratives, Barbara Jedruszczak
Dissertations - ALL
An exploration of how characters develop identity through language use in a video game’s narrative, specifically in video games that do not allow for players to make narrative-altering choices. The concept of literacies is used to create a critical framework through which to view video games themselves as a literacy, as well as to view them as a discourse. This thesis analyzes how dialogue is used to develop and showcase gender, sexuality, personality, moral identity in characters in and out of the player’s control, as well as how dialogue builds the narrative world in which these characters exist. This thesis …

Seeing Right From Wrong: A Defense Of A Posteriori Ethical Intuitionism, Preston John Werner
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation develops and defends the claim that our epistemic access to
moral properties is grounded in a posteriori perceptual experiences. It is divided into
two parts. In part I, I present the epistemic access problem for realist moral
epistemology, and then argue against several a priori attempts to resolve the problem. I
begin by defending an understanding of evolutionary debunking arguments according
to which the problem is grounded in a lack of epistemic access to sui generis, non-causal
moral facts. Next, I argue that even the most sophisticated versions of reflective
equilibrium fall victim to the “garbage in, garbage …

19th Century Gothic Inspiration: Investigating The Next Generation Of Poes, Alexandrea L. Horton
All Student Theses and Dissertations
The objective of my study is to examine specific works by Edgar Allan Poe that best emulate his literary obsession with insanity and the grotesque, arguing that these elements of his literature serve as the source of inspiration for many 20th and 21st century gothic literature writers. Two of Poe’s poems that will be analyzed and critiqued include, “The Sleeper” which was originally published in 1831 and “The Raven” published in 1845. There will also be two of Poe’s shorter fiction pieces that will be analyzed and critiqued, which include, “Berenice” published in 1835 and “The Black Cat” …
Critical Exploration Of The Neo-Slave Narrative In Selected Walker And Morrison Novels, Meisha M. Edwards-White
Critical Exploration Of The Neo-Slave Narrative In Selected Walker And Morrison Novels, Meisha M. Edwards-White
All Student Theses and Dissertations
This study examines Alice Walker’s The Colored Purple and Toni Morrison’s Beloved as Neo-Slave Narratives. These extraordinary authors reveal slave history in their novels. Although these novels deal with neo-slave narratives, they closely identify with history of African American enslavement. Walker and Morrison express through their works the many ways African American women lived in bondage during slavery. Their characters speak volumes to the mis-treatment of African Americans.
Neo-Slave Narratives are contemporary works of fiction. Walker and Morrison have chosen to illustrate the horrors of slavery as it relates to African Americans. The novelists demonstrate the realities of slavery in …
