The first German-born immigrant to settle m Louisville was Augustus David Ehrich, a mastershoemaker from Konigsberg, Prussia, who arrived in 1817. German immigration to Louisville progressed slowly in the 1820s, and by 1832 only 25 German-born heads of households were living in Louisville.

Neutrality, Autonomy, And Power, Eldar Sarajlic

Publications and Research

This paper critically examines Alan Patten’s theory of neutrality of treatment. It argues that the theory assumes an inadequate conception of personal autonomy, which undermines its plausibility. However, I suggest that the theory can resolve the problem by developing and reinterpreting its conception of autonomy and introducing an additional strategy for addressing the power imbalances that result from the market-based interactions between individuals and their conceptions of the good.

A number of factors in the mid-nineteenth century led the Benedictine monks of Einsiedeln, situated in the Swiss pre-alpine region south of Lake Zurich, to establish a daughter house faraway in the United States. The repeated urging from Catholic bishops plus the eagerness to evangelize new areas, the great need for priests to serve German-speaking Catholic immigrants, and perhaps also a certain search for adventure, all were additional reasons.

Russell Library Undergraduate Research Award

In Flannery O’Connor’s short story “The Displaced Person” there are many themes that pertain to religion, but in addition O’Connor develops secular concepts throughout the story. One such character, Mrs. McIntyre comes across to the readers as a self centered, racist, and xenophobic woman. She treats her tenant farmers, the Shortleys, Astor, Sulk, and the Guizacs with great disrespect and wants to or threatens to dismiss all of them at different points throughout the story. Critics of Mrs. McIntyre, such as Miles Orvell author of Invisible Parade: The Fiction of Flannery O’Connor, argues that her character is unsympathetic and …

Becoming Hearing: Describing Co-Construction Of Expert Asl/English Interpreter Deaf-World Cultural Competence, Leah Subak

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This article describes deaf and hearing expert interpreter participants’ perspectives on Deaf-World cultural competence (DWCC). DWCC is a concept explicitly and implicitly embedded in the Conference of Interpreter Trainer’s (CIT’s) mission statement. American deaf and mainstream cultures coexist and interpreters facilitate communication between individuals not sharing a common language. The author completed a qualitative study and dissertation, and relied on expert deaf and hearing participants’ responses given during narrative interviews. Participants described their lived experience entering and maintaining ties to the Deaf-World. The inquiry explored participants’ identity transformations as they came to be described by their deaf-conferred ASL label, …
