Pickering Lumber Company: Archival Processing Project, Joyce Madeline Pitts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Founded by W.R. Pickering in 1894, the Pickering Lumber Company had lumber operations in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and California. The company practiced cut-and-run policy that dictated the relocation of lumber operations when the company exhausted its timber holdings. The Pickering Lumber Company operated in Texas and Western Louisiana from 1898 to roughly 1930 when timber holdings were exhausted and financial difficulties brought on by the Great Depression required the withdrawal of the company from its mill at Haslam. This thesis narrates the story of the Pickering Lumber Company and explains the procedures undertaken to process the Pickering Lumber Company Collection …

Defining “Justice” In Post-Conflict Societies By Exploring The Case Of The Armenian Genocide., Narek Ghazaryan

This study examines the many different approaches towards justice in post-conflict societies. It analysis the two main theories of justice and uses the Armenian Genocide as a case study to comprehend what constitutes justice in the aftermath of a humanitarian crisis. This study aims to define “justice” by the Armenian population in forms of surveys and expert interviews. It is the community who is directly impacted by the crisis can indeed identify what justice mean to them. For a society to heal in the aftermath of conflict justice needs to be served in order to restore peace and harmony. For …

African Dreams Of America: Diaspora Experience In The Writing Of Aidoo, Adichie And Cole, Gbenga Frederick Olorunsiwa

This study explores four African diasporic texts against a backdrop of the African dream of America, diasporic experience, post-colonialism and racism in the U.S. as portrayed in the writings of Ama Ata Aidoo’s The Dilemma of a Ghost (1971), Chimamanda Adichie’s Americanah (2014), and Teju Cole’s Open City (2012) and Every Day Is for the Thief (2014). I argue that the African dream of America is different but also exemplary of the American experience and therefore a privileged lens for understanding “America.” During the course of this research project, I found that while the writings of Adichie and Aidoo are …

Britain And The Anglo-Saxons In Late Antiquity, Todd Morrison

This thesis concerns the final century of Roman Britain, the continental origins of its medieval Germanic invaders, and the socio-political situation in sub-Roman Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries. Multiple issues are discussed in each of these three broad areas, including the effects of the Diocletian Reforms on Britain, fourth-century urban decay, the first-century origins of the Saxons among the piratical Chauci tribe, and the continued existence of Roman institutions in Britain into the early Middle Ages.
