Witness: Reflections On Detention In Joyce Carol Oates's Work, Tanya L. Tromble
Witness: Reflections On Detention In Joyce Carol Oates's Work, Tanya L. Tromble
Bearing Witness: Joyce Carol Oates Studies
Throughout her career, Joyce Carol Oates has resisted the urge of others to label her a feminist writer, insisting that she be considered a writer, independent of biological gender. As America’s “chronicler of the middle class,” she has given voice to countless invisible female character types, but this is only one concern among many. Oates is incredibly active, but rather than to actively incite, she uses her prolific pen to create testimonies to contemporary American life, seeking particularly to give voice to the voiceless among us. In spite of the notions of crime and justice being central to her fiction …

Ambassadors For The Kingdom Of God Or For America? Christian Nationalism, The Christian Right, And The Contra War, Lauren Frances Turek
Ambassadors For The Kingdom Of God Or For America? Christian Nationalism, The Christian Right, And The Contra War, Lauren Frances Turek
History Faculty Research
This essay uses the concept of Christian nationalism to explore the religious dynamics of the Contra war and U.S.–Nicaraguan relations during Ronald Reagan’s presidency. Religious organizations and individuals played crucial roles on both sides in the war in Nicaragua and in the debates in the United States over support for the Contras. Evangelistic work strengthened transnational ties between Christians, but also raised the stakes of the war; supporters of the Sandinistas and Contras alike alleged a victory by their adversary imperiled the future of Christianity in Nicaragua. Christian nationalism thus manifested itself and intertwined in both the United States and …

Rollyson Explains The Art Of Biography., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
A fixture of any bookstore is the biography section. It seems that the general public has a fascination with the subject. And no matter how many times famous people have had their biographies written, there is always interest in learning more about them.
Someone who has been very successful as a biographer is Dr. Carl Rollyson. And he has an explanation for why there is such endless interest in the lives of famous people. “I think people read biographies simply to learn. I think it was (the writer Ralph Waldo) Emerson who said that biography is teaching by example. People …
Artists’ Expression Of Women’S Unresolvable Internal Conflict, Diedre Miles-Girod
Artists’ Expression Of Women’S Unresolvable Internal Conflict, Diedre Miles-Girod
Senior Theses
The Victorian period (1837 to 1901) was a time of great change in the United States. The country was growing with the Louisiana Purchase and the addition of several states to the Union. Railroads were connecting together the vast lands. Unprecedented economic and manufacturing changes were unfolding; it was the time of the Industrial Revolution. This period also brought about a revolution for women by opening up new possibilities in many spheres of life. However, these new possibilities, ironically, exacerbated a timeless women’s struggle of finding balance between their traditional roles as caregivers and their human need for self-‐ expression. …

Behold, Steve Bannon’S Hip-Hop Shakespeare Rewrite: 'Coriolanus', Daniel Pollack-Pelzner
Faculty Publications
In this opinion piece originally published in the New York Times, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner examines The Thing I Am (a contemporary rewrite of Coriolanus, as envisioned by Steve Bannon and Julia Jones) in the context of Shakespeare's original play. Pollack-Pelzner argues that Bannon's political playbook is evident in the script for The Thing I Am — namely, a violent macho conflict to purge corrupt leaders and pave the way for a new strongman to emerge.

Pickering Lumber Company: Archival Processing Project, Joyce Madeline Pitts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Founded by W.R. Pickering in 1894, the Pickering Lumber Company had lumber operations in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and California. The company practiced cut-and-run policy that dictated the relocation of lumber operations when the company exhausted its timber holdings. The Pickering Lumber Company operated in Texas and Western Louisiana from 1898 to roughly 1930 when timber holdings were exhausted and financial difficulties brought on by the Great Depression required the withdrawal of the company from its mill at Haslam. This thesis narrates the story of the Pickering Lumber Company and explains the procedures undertaken to process the Pickering Lumber Company Collection …

Opening, Renee M. Wilcox
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While examining some of the dark, chaotic, destructive issues that exist on a global level, I see an opposite movement actively emerging as a means to counteract, mend, and create new patterns of non-violent communication. This change is an opening to new beginnings. Opening expresses this concept through iconography, the use of symbols, which opens an internal and external dialog with the viewer, through incorporating text, and through portraits of contemporary leaders who are devoted to peace-building work. Members of the community have also expressed this desire to open themselves up to these possibilities, through their written intentions and dreams, …
Britain And The Anglo-Saxons In Late Antiquity, Todd Morrison
Britain And The Anglo-Saxons In Late Antiquity, Todd Morrison
History ETDs
This thesis concerns the final century of Roman Britain, the continental origins of its medieval Germanic invaders, and the socio-political situation in sub-Roman Britain in the fifth and sixth centuries. Multiple issues are discussed in each of these three broad areas, including the effects of the Diocletian Reforms on Britain, fourth-century urban decay, the first-century origins of the Saxons among the piratical Chauci tribe, and the continued existence of Roman institutions in Britain into the early Middle Ages. Furthermore, the reasons the Anglo-Saxons did not assimilate into Roman culture like their counterparts on the continent, making medieval England an essentially …

African Dreams Of America: Diaspora Experience In The Writing Of Aidoo, Adichie And Cole, Gbenga Frederick Olorunsiwa
American Studies ETDs
This study explores four African diasporic texts against a backdrop of the African dream of America, diasporic experience, post-colonialism and racism in the U.S. as portrayed in the writings of Ama Ata Aidoo’s The Dilemma of a Ghost (1971), Chimamanda Adichie’s Americanah (2014), and Teju Cole’s Open City (2012) and Every Day Is for the Thief (2014). I argue that the African dream of America is different but also exemplary of the American experience and therefore a privileged lens for understanding “America.” During the course of this research project, I found that while the writings of Adichie and Aidoo are …

Bonding Theatre And Chemistry: An Educational Exploration, Matthew Gurniak
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
This paper analyzes the educational aspects of theatre and music and the impact that they have on an audience. The goal was to begin a new conversation about science and theatre and how the two can learn and gain unique insight from each other. To examine how these two antithetical fields can interact, I composed a new, innovative musical that tells the love story between two professors through the use of concepts from general chemistry. The results and responses from the performance of the play were overwhelmingly positive from members of both disciplines. They have inspired continued interest in this …
