Gabe's Reimagined: A Multi-Use Renovation Of An Abandoned Hotel, Alissa Ramburger

The building, named Gabe’s Tower after owner and public figure Gabe Fiorella, was once an icon of Owensboro. Unfortunately, due to population growth southward and the opening of a rival hotel downtown (The Executive Inn), Gabe’s Tower was unable to remain open. It has since undergone many different ownerships, each of which have struggled to remain profitable. The building has remained vacant for years and therefore has been subjected to becoming a location for crime. This has produced a very negative image for the building and the surrounding area. 文昇是一個在大牌檔工作了大半輩子的老員工。他性格忠厚，十五歲便入行工作，一直到三十五歲時，重遇了早年認識的大牌檔同行順哥。在那個經濟蓬勃的黃金時代，順哥藉炒賣樓房及股票而風生水起。這次重遇成為文昇一生的第一個轉折點——相信天道酬勤的他改變心態，與順哥合夥做生意，不料「九七」金融風暴把這一切覆滅，他一無所有。

在窮困潦倒時，文昇通過「假結婚」賺錢應急，因此認識了妻子碧英。可惜他的人生就如大牌檔的命運一樣一直走下坡，再無起色。到了文昇六十多歲時，政府因大牌檔生意慘淡而決定把地方收回。面臨著即將失業的危機，以及養育年幼兒子的負擔，他感到彷徨。

本文不僅是敘述這個普通員工的一生，更希望呈現透過他一生，反映香港時代的變化，以及大牌檔的興衰；借整理、回顧過去，表達我們身處在這個年代，面對一些本土事物、價值慢慢失去時，雖彷徨無力，卻仍持有堅韌的生命力繼續生活。面對時代的衝擊，不肯妥協的我們，該如何走下去？

Daoism And Disability, Andrew Lambert

Ideas found in the early Daoist texts can inform current debates about disability, since the latter often involve assumptions about personhood and agency that Daoist texts do not share. The two canonical texts of classical Daoism, the Daodejing and the Zhuangzi, do not explicitly discuss disability as an object of theory or offer a model of it. They do, however, provide conceptual resources that can enrich contemporary discussions of disability. Two particular ideas are discussed here. Classical Daoist thinking about the body undermines normative assumptions about it that attributions of ‘disabled’ often depend upon; and Daoism vividly problematises the …

Between the mid-1990s and the present, a poetics of digitization emerged around Emily Dickinson’s manuscripts, performed primarily by the members of the Emily Dickinson Editorial Collective. Translating Dickinson’s work across archival sources, scanned images, typographic transcripts, and coding languages has offered Dickinson’s editors an escape from the determinism that accompanied the age of print and an opportunity to highlight the continuum along which the poet composed her body of work. Through multimodal, interactive exhibits, electronic editors of the Dickinson corpus often seek to demonstrate that no one medium is sufficient to represent the range of meaning implied in Dickinson’s body …

Using Literature To Combat Bullying And Suicide, Laura Giles

Every day in Utah, two youth are treated for suicide attempts. On average, 37 youth die from suicide each year in the state. Additionally, 942 others are injured in suicide attempts each year. In 2013, suicide surpassed unintentional injuries to become the leading cause of death in Utah among youth ages 10 through 17 (Utah Department of Health, 2014).

As we started to compare notes, it occurred to us that we shared a lot of students. Many English teachers feel overwhelmed at the sheer volume of standards we are expected to cover. Teaching young readers and writers requires a significant investment of class time, and as a result, many of us end up using class discussions as the sole assessment for the Speaking and Listening standards.

Transitions can be a challenge for writers at any stage. For example, I once explained to an eighth grade class my observations on a sample piece of writing. I praised their strengths, and then explained a consistent problem throughout the classes: the use of “in conclusion” for their restatement of their main claim. I teased them with no shame, and they giggled and admitted to classmates that it was the only option that came into their minds. Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This study is an application of cultural economic value theory within the context of visual art. Current literature supports an incompatibility between objective, empirical economic research and the subjectivity of artistic expression. While variables affecting the intrinsic value of art are difficult to identify and measure, this study quantified the effect of context information on university students’ perceptions of visual art. For this study, 118 randomly assigned University of Arkansas students viewed four identical works of art and answered identical questions designed to measure perceptions of intrinsic value. The aim of this paper is to present the principal areas of sociolinguistic research concerning Spanish spoken in the United States. In doing so, we focus on a variety of topics ranging from macro-sociolinguistic issues, such as the sociology of language, to micro-sociolinguistic features having more to do with language variation and change. In our discussion of bilingualism and sociology of language, we explore the situation faced by Spanish speakers in the United States, including discussions of language policies and bilingual education. This chapter explores Mexican vampire movies of the 1950s and follows the vampire’s journey from the Americas to Europe and back in order to analyze the ways in which the monster is articulated in each cultural context. The specific Mexican articulation of the vampire in Fernando Méndez’sEl vampiro is modeled after Hollywood films, yet the film carries nuanced meaning having to do with national identity and borders. In this film, the vampire is a menacing figure that arrives seeking to infect, invade, and conquer. At the same time, he is potentially a subversive other that transgresses borders and threatens …

Throughout Cervantes’s Don Quijote, dress and language play an important role in establishing a character’s identity for both other characters and the reader. Beginning with the very first page of the novel, the narrator’s description of Alonso Quijano’s wardrobe, along with other amusing quotidian behaviors, establishes the protagonist’s status as an impoverished, Old Christian, rural hidalgo. Furthermore, Quijano’s performance as Don Quijote hinges on his sartorial trappings, and his first transformative act is to clean up the ancestral armor and, quite literally, “suit up” for his new role. Once astride Rocinante, the reader is treated to Quijote’s fanciful musings in …

There are many ways to view or approach the study of a national cemetery. Each cemetery has a unique history but also fits some general patterns. The most obvious focus of study would be on the history of the cemetery itself or the lives of those commemorated there. Another approach would be through architecture and design, the style of the structures, or the layout of the grounds. A more scientific emphasis might focus on the landscape, its flora, and its wildlife, and investigate what life is supported among the manicured lawns. The geography …

Referencing the study of the microstructure of metallic alloys in its title, Metallography (…) splices together two types of found image: close-up and microscopic images of metals, from a collection of 1972 BBC instructional films on mechanical engineering, with images of bronze sculptures taken from ‘I think in Shapes: Henry Moore’, a documentary also produced by the BBC, which featured the Moore’s outdoor exhibition at Tate Gallery London in 1968.
