Introduction To "Independent Stardom: Freelance Women In The Hollywood Studio System", Emily Carman
Film and Media Arts Faculty Books and Book Chapters
During the heyday of Hollywood’s studio system, stars were carefully cultivated and promoted, but at the price of their independence. This familiar narrative of Hollywood stardom receives a long-overdue shakeup in Emily Carman’s new book. Far from passive victims of coercive seven-year contracts, a number of classic Hollywood’s best-known actresses worked on a freelance basis within the restrictive studio system. In leveraging their stardom to play an active role in shaping their careers, female stars including Irene Dunne, Janet Gaynor, Miriam Hopkins, Carole Lombard, and Barbara Stanwyck challenged Hollywood’s patriarchal structure.

"Jewish existence is often said to be marked by two contradictory perils: hatred and acceptance. Reflecting on the historical past, I note that, at its extreme, hatred led to mass extermination (the Holocaust), whereas acceptance, ironically, had the potential to result in self- attrition through the massive loss of Jewish self-identification (assimilation).1 As a result of hatred, Jewish life was characterized by centuries of segregation and oppression, which of course affected the construction of Jewish identity. Artist's Statement:
Twenty-one is a composition portrait of a teenager. The technique employed includes printing the image on 5” x 7” aluminum flashing, using an inkjet transfer process. While investigating alternative printing processes, I learned of German artist Berit Myreboe’s hauntingly beautiful portraits that are manipulated transfer prints on aluminum, accented with paint. I emulated Myreboe’s work in using aluminum as a printing surface for my portraits, but I decided not to add paint to soften the images. I utilized aluminum as a printing surface to add depth to the work and to reinforce a sense of constant change as …

Pope Francis’s recent encyclical, Laudato Si’ (“Praised Be You”), has been one of the most widely anticipated papal documents in recent memory. It has also received far more popular commentary than would be expected of a papal encyclical. Yet, while Laudato Si’ has been widely dubbed “the climate change” encyclical, it is far broader than that. It is also a far-reaching analysis of a number of political, economic, social and legal issues, in addition to being an extensive exposition on human duties toward creation.
