Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although women's history surrounds us, women's contributions to history are easily over looked and often unacknowledged. In fact, decades ago, there was what could be referred to as the invisibility of women in any serious study of history in spite of the fact that history itself has not and can never be solely a male preserve. It was not until recently towards the end of the 20th century that women's history began to be studied and documented. However, since the past fifty years, a number of roadblocks still prevent the historian from producing a coherent narrative on women's history as …

The Garage Band Lightshow, Jason Descenzo Mar 2014

The Garage Band Lightshow, Jason Descenzo

Electrical Engineering

The expenses musicians accrue make it hard to afford all the different equipment needed to perform and very unlikely that the average start up band or artist can afford the luxury of a musical light show in their early performances. The Garage Band Lightshow provides an easily set up and affordable way for musicians to use concert lighting in their performances. The Garage Band Lightshow provides one LED box. The light box responds to an audio signal and provides varying pulses and colors of light depending on the high, mid, and low frequencies of the audio signal. The Garage Band …

The Mechanistic Approach Of 'The Theory Of Island Biogeography' And Its Current Relevance, Viorel Pâslaru Mar 2014

The Mechanistic Approach Of 'The Theory Of Island Biogeography' And Its Current Relevance, Viorel Pâslaru

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Philosophers of science have examined The Theory of Island Biogeography by Robert MacArthur and E. O. Wilson (1967) mainly due to its important contribution to modeling in ecology, but they have not examined it as a representative case of ecological explanation. In this paper, I scrutinize the type of explanation used in this paradigmatic work of ecology. I describe the philosophy of science of MacArthur and Wilson and show that it is mechanistic. Based on this account and in light of contributions to the mechanistic conception of explanation due to Craver (2007), and Bechtel and Richardson (1993), I argue that …

Aesthetically Designed Maps: Development And Perception, Catherine Wang Mar 2014

Aesthetically Designed Maps: Development And Perception, Catherine Wang

Graphic Communication

This research explored the creative element of subway map creation in light of its effectiveness. Printed subway maps, used often for metropolitan cities and areas, are limited in physical dimension and scale, carrying minimal information. The New York, San Francisco Bay Area, Tokyo, Paris, London and Moscow subway maps highlight similar design and abstraction that fulfill the basic necessary elements for subway patrons. Over the years since the first metro map for each city was created, maps have become more simplified by removing physical land features and reference points to make way for expanding and new subway lines, stations, and …

What Are Little Girls Made Of?, Francesca Soans Mar 2014

What Are Little Girls Made Of?, Francesca Soans

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

What Are Little Girls Made Of? is a postcolonial exploration of nursery rhymes in which animation and the textures of personal memories are ironically juxtaposed to comment on the continued legacy of European cultural colonialism in India.

As an Indian woman reminisces about growing up in India, a child’s drawing unfolds on the screen, narrating the well-known English nursery rhyme, “Little Miss Muffet.” The woman recalls her deep desire for a white dress and blond hair, as her own dark skin relegates her to the position of “boy” in school plays. The memories, seemingly nostalgic, are juxtaposed with an …

Missional Communities: Equipping Churches To Reach Their Local Context, Robert Glen Parker Mar 2014

Missional Communities: Equipping Churches To Reach Their Local Context, Robert Glen Parker

Doctor of Ministry

In the Northeast region of the United States, surveys suggest church participation is steadily declining. We contend that a primary reason for this decline is that churches have become insular and exclusive, leading to a failure to meet the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of their communities. The problem raises the question, "How do churches move beyond exclusivity to engage in relevant ministry within their local communities?" Throughout the Bible, God is the initiator of a relationship with humanity. God created Adam and Eve, and set out a redemptive plan to restore them to right relationship when their connection to …

Burnout And The Gospel: Moving From Burnout To True Elders With The Gospel Grand Narrative, Cary S. Peterson Mar 2014

Burnout And The Gospel: Moving From Burnout To True Elders With The Gospel Grand Narrative, Cary S. Peterson

Doctor of Ministry

Burnout among Western church leaders occurs at an alarming rate. Effective responses must go beyond the symptoms of burnout to the theology these leaders chose, which ultimately shapes their visions of life and leadership. This project explores the experience of burnout and its relationship to the prevailing version of the gospel in the Western church, suggesting this epidemic is connected to in an inaccurate version of the gospel that finds fertile soil in the leader’s own unresolved personal identity issues. Part 1 (Chapters 1-3) introduces the burnout epidemic and the prevailing version of the gospel in the West. Chapter 1 …

Promoting Missionary Mutual Care Through Spiritual Community, David L. Shepherd Mar 2014

Promoting Missionary Mutual Care Through Spiritual Community, David L. Shepherd

Doctor of Ministry

Personal struggle and the stressors that catalyze them are inevitable in missionary life. When overly focusing on ministry and enculturation demands, cross-culturally based Christian workers can often neglect intra and inter-personal spiritual formation. The result of such neglect is a lack of purpose, vitality, endurance and effectiveness, and in some cases, the missionary leaves the field altogether. For missionaries to thrive and succeed requires that they place a high priority on mutual and intentional care. Therefore, I will explore the necessity and means of cultivating spiritual community among on-thefield missionaries for their mutual care and development. Chapter 1 introduces the …

A Renewed Homiletic For The Twenty-First-Century Church, Douglas Witherup Mar 2014

A Renewed Homiletic For The Twenty-First-Century Church, Douglas Witherup

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation proposes that a homiletic recapturing a methodology implicit in Jesus’ preaching (story/image/metaphor, questions, and supernatural encounter) enables preachers to more effectively communicate to a twenty-first-century audience. Section one identifies the problem: namely the recent devaluing of preaching and the continued reliance on a 2500-year-old propositional homiletic. Section two examines other proposed solutions, including inductive preaching, postmodern voices, and current popular preachers. Section three examines our thesis, both by investigating Jesus’ preaching methodology in the canonical gospels and seeking to discover if and how that methodology translates to an effective renewed homiletic. Sections four and five outline the dynamics …

Reclaiming The Kingdom Of God Metaphor For The Twenty-First-Century Church, Timothy R. Willson Mar 2014

Reclaiming The Kingdom Of God Metaphor For The Twenty-First-Century Church, Timothy R. Willson

Doctor of Ministry

In this dissertation I will argue that an egocentric eschatology (preoccupation with what happens to the individual at the moment of death) has unwittingly trumped the importance of incarnating the Kingdom of God in this present world. It is my assertion that a better understanding of Kingdom of God theology and the promotion of its priority will inspire Christian discipleship leading to reformation and renewal in the church. For this to happen, we must fundamentally renovate our definition and articulate the meaning of “Kingdom of God” as His sovereign reign and rule over a people He has called out, set …

Public Relations In The Fashion Industry: The Use Of Blogging To Build Customer Relations Through Accessibility/Approachability, Jordana Shiau Mar 2014

Public Relations In The Fashion Industry: The Use Of Blogging To Build Customer Relations Through Accessibility/Approachability, Jordana Shiau

Journalism

This study analyzes the platform of blogging and how it can be used as a public relations tool to create relatability and accessibility in the fashion industry, an industry that has notoriously been exclusive to the public. The rise of social media has given audiences a “behind-the-scenes” look into the fashion industry and has provided a voice to the industry. Audiences no longer just view the fashion industry as an exclusive club that no one can join: it has become an industry that anyone with a blogging platform and a smart phone can participate in. As personal style bloggers become …

José Esteban Muñoz, Nació1967 – Murió El 4 De Diciembre 2013, Jason Benjamín Treviño

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

When I was asked to prepare this song in memory of José Esteban Muñoz, I thought it would fly from my fingers and land perfectly onto a page like those so many obituaries I wrote in my former years working as a Funeral Director and Embalmer. But those skills don’t transfer here. My curser remained mute, blinking angrily at me to write about a man I never met but whose work was a bright star. It is a sad honor to participate in the celebration of José Esteban Muñoz’s life and works.
