Aesthetic Mediation And The Politics Of Technology: (Re)New(Ed) Strategies For A Critical Social Theory, Andrew J. Pierce
Aesthetic Mediation And The Politics Of Technology: (Re)New(Ed) Strategies For A Critical Social Theory, Andrew J. Pierce
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
There is a rich history in early critical theory of attempting to harness the power of aesthetic imagination for the purposes of political liberation. But this approach has largely faded to the background of contemporary critical theory, eclipsed lately by attempts to reconstruct and apply norms of rationality to processes of democratic will formation a` la Habermas. This paper represents a small attempt to return the aesthetic element to its proper place within critical theory, by investigating the aesthetic aspects of certain forms of resistance to technological domination, forms of resistance that become ‘‘embodied’’ in technologies themselves. The phenomena of …

Hegel’S Account Of The Unconscious And Why It Matters, Richard Thomas Eldridge
Philosophy Faculty Works
Hegel’s account of the unconscious and his broader philosophy of mind offer us a well worked out form of non-dualist, non-reductionist, non-eliminativist, non-representationalist naturalism. Hegel describes the development of discursively structured thought (and responsiveness to norms) in ethological terms as emerging from initial somatic-sensory states, from states and processes of bodily activity on the part of a feeling soul, and from structured habituation in relation to other subjects. Importantly, earlier, less organized states of sensory awareness and feeling persist as residues underneath cognitive development in “the pit of imagination.” Imagistic and sensory-somatic materials from this pit can burst out, among …

"The Bible recounts how God has used people of all ages and backgrounds to advance His purposes. Many of the most remarkable events of the biblical story involved young people. It should not be surprising to find that in recent centuries, many of the greatest things God has done to fulfill the Great Commission have been done with university students." —David Howard
University students on campuses today will be leaders tomorrow. According to recent statistics, there are approximately 150 million college students in the world today, roughly 2% of the world’s population. Though this may be a small fraction of …

Moore Of Feminine Style: A Rhetorical Examination Of "Wednesdays With Beth", Terrie Meeks
Masters Theses
Beth Moore is a best-selling author of books and Bible studies, a speaker to crowds that fill places like the Georgia Super Dome, as well as an international speaker, a radio and television personality, and she is achieving this milestone as a woman, in a world lit with male stars. Through all of these venues it is estimated that Moore speaks to hundreds of thousands of people each year. One of Moore's most recent ventures is speaking on Life Today with James and Betty Robison. Each week features an episode of "Wednesdays with Beth." Using Karlyn Kohrs Campbell's theory of …

Faculty Research and Publications
The article presents an examination of an allusion to the work of the 20th-century English author D. H. Lawrence within the 1929 novel "Brave New World," by Aldous Huxley. Introductory details are offered relating the friendship between Huxley and Lawrence. Specific instances of references to Lawrence's essay "Men Must Work and Women as Well," within Huxley's dystopian novel are then identified and explained.

Mary "Maly" Hopkinson Gibbon was born on September 25, 1903, to an affluent New England family who encouraged her to embrace her intelligence and to follow that by which she was intrigued. In doing this, Maly pursued work in scientific research, where she ultimately met her first husband, Dr. John ‘‘Jack’’ H. Gibbon. Jack and Maly were partners in every sense of the word. Their collaboration, both within and beyond the walls of the research laboratory, made it possible for the Gibbon dream of the heart–lung machine to be realized.

John Rajchman asks, “In what ways have exhibitions, more than simple displays and confi gurations of objects, helped change ideas about art, intersecting at particular junctions with technical innovations, discursive shift s and larger kinds of philosophical investigations, thus forming part of these larger histories?” This essay attempts to answer his question by discussing curating as whole text sampling.

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Internationalizing Interwar Egypt's Bachelor Tax Proposal: The Emasculation Of The State And Its Single Sons, Hanan Kholoussy
Faculty Journal Articles
This article analyzes the handful of writers in early twentieth-century Egypt who demanded a bachelor tax to resolve the ostensible marriage crisis facing the semi-colonial nation during British occupation. They argued that it was the Egyptian government's duty to impose a bachelor tax that would coerce men to marry. The vast majority were inspired by other countries that were actively combating their marital crises as models that the Egyptian state should emulate.

Prominent theopolitical thinkers of recent decades, including Yoder, Hauerwas and Cavanaugh, have called attention to key ways in which the church loses its identity as a distinctive polis. Constantinian habits of thinking, liberalism’s hostility to traditions (“no story but the story I choose for myself”), and the modern order’s relegation of “religion” to a “private,” over against a “public” sphere, have each been examined in association with the church’s inability to be the church. But what role does the phenomenon of nationalism play in the church’s going astray? This question, coupled with another—‘In what ways is the church itself responsible …

A Review By Logan Of Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Toether In The Cafeteria?: And Other Conversations About Race, By Beverly Daniel Tatum, Stephanie R. Logan
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Beverly Daniel Tatum’s most popular work outlines racial identity development and the challenges with having meaningful conversations on race. In order to engage the reader in self-reflection to have such conversations, Tatum uses practical examples from her experience as a parent and a college professor. She highlights conversations she has had with her own children about race and racism, as well as teaching activities she has used and discussions she has facilitated to engage her college students in recognizing, understanding, and embracing their racial identity.
In the first section of the text, Tatum draws attention the term racism. She distinguishes …

Male Call: The Role Of The Church In Awakening Young Men To Their Vocational Purpose, Thomas G. Shaw
Male Call: The Role Of The Church In Awakening Young Men To Their Vocational Purpose, Thomas G. Shaw
Doctor of Ministry
Many young adult men are struggling in their transition from adolescence to adulthood. Unique challenges converge in their quest for vocational discovery and career choice. The church is largely ignored as a guide as they make choices about work and career. Christian churches have been slow to provide practical guidance in faith and work; especially for disciples with an interest in professions and careers outside Christian ministry. There is a need for an informed church to guide young men so that they may reach their potential through the discovery of calling and vocation. I propose that the church must assume …

Examining The Historical Representation Of Native Americans Within Children’S Literature, Lauren Hunt
Examining The Historical Representation Of Native Americans Within Children’S Literature, Lauren Hunt
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In this research, I evaluated the historical representation of Native Americans in children’s literature. The portrayal of Native Americans in children’s literature is important because Native Americans are commonly included within elementary school social studies curriculum. For this reason, teachers should know how the literature they select historically represents Native Americans. This historical representation includes—but is not limited to—their interactions with European explorers, colonists, and eventually Americans. Teachers must be aware that publishers of children’s books are businesses; their job is to sell books. As a result, these companies do not always ensure that the books they sell are historically …
