Wimps, Dorks, And Reluctant Readers: Redefining Literacy In Multimodal Middle Grade Diary Books, Rachel Lee Rickard
Wimps, Dorks, And Reluctant Readers: Redefining Literacy In Multimodal Middle Grade Diary Books, Rachel Lee Rickard
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Since the release of Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the multimodal, middle-grade diary book has gained popularity. The series features “handwritten,” journal entries and drawings and has elicited many imitators, the most prominent of which is Rachel Renee Russell’s Dork Diaries. While the diary form is not new to children’s literature, these series reinvent the established conventions through drawings and supplementary online environments. Both series are routinely identified as for reluctant readers; however, their diversity of form actually leads to complex reader engagement. My purpose is to refute the idea that the books are useful only …
The Stories We Tell: Narratives, Institutional Discourse, And The Public Documents Of Writing Centers Part Iii, Tammy Conard-Salvo
The Stories We Tell: Narratives, Institutional Discourse, And The Public Documents Of Writing Centers Part Iii, Tammy Conard-Salvo
Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Presentations
This presentation from the 2014 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) explores how writing center administrators can create research spaces that not only further the work of writing centers but that also can be used to tell institutional and global stories of scholarship and outreach. The presentation describes how one writing center began a research repository to showcase its research to a global audience and to prevent scholarship that might have otherwise gone unpublished from being lost. Promoting research and research spaces—especially research that does not easily fall within the scope of traditional writing center work—may be one answer …
Centering Our Stories: Applying Spatial Metaphors To Writing Center Publicity, Stacy O. Nall
Centering Our Stories: Applying Spatial Metaphors To Writing Center Publicity, Stacy O. Nall
Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Graduate Student Presentations
This presentation at the 2014 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) discusses how writing centers can use digital spaces to position themselves as assets to their campus and local communities. While most writing centers have pages on their universities’ websites, there continue to be new ways that writing centers can take advantage of these spaces to make their work more visible to wider publics. One way they can do so, the presenter suggests, is through publishing stories about and by the people with whom they partner. These stories give greater visibility not only to achievements, but also help to …
Expanding Audiences For Online Writing Labs: Owls In The English As A Foreign Language Context, Joshua Paiz
Expanding Audiences For Online Writing Labs: Owls In The English As A Foreign Language Context, Joshua Paiz
Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Graduate Student Presentations
This presentation from the 2014 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) discusses online writing labs (OWLs), specifically the Purdue OWL, in the traditionally-defined English as a foreign language (EFL) context. The ELF context often presents unique challenges for the teaching of English writing, including challenges of finding appropriate resources. This may lead EFL writing practitioners to rely on the information presented by OWLs to supplement their teaching. However, many OWLs were originally designed for the so-called native speaker (North American, UK, Australian, New Zealand) audience. This raises the question of whether or not OWLs are meeting the needs of …

Soaring Into The Future: The Purdue Owl And Supporting The Next Generation Of Writers, Tammy Conard-Salvo, Caitlan Spronk, Joshua Paiz
Purdue Writing Lab/Purdue OWL Presentations
Twenty years ago, the Purdue OWL was born as a website. Over these past twenty years, the Purdue OWL has become a popular, open-access writing resource utilized by tutors and writers all over the globe. This panel at the 2014 East Central Writing Centers Association (2014) conference discusses how the Purdue OWL has worked to stay relevant to its users throughout the past two decades. Panelists also discuss directions for the future. Attendees are invited to share their stories about the Purdue OWL and OWLs in general and how they support the next generation of writers
About Paternal Voices In Adoption Narratives, Fu-Jen Chen
About Paternal Voices In Adoption Narratives, Fu-Jen Chen
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "About Paternal Voices in Adoption Narratives" Fu-jen Chen examines the emerging voices of fathers in adoption discourse. Breaking the reticence and challenging the stereotypical profile of birth fathers and the father overall, birth fathers in narratives resort to essentialism or victimhood, a cultural imagination in adoption discourse. Further, Chen examines adoption narratives by adoptive fathers arguing that their reluctance to call for a father-to-father relationship — either rivalry or alliance — indicates a sign of disavowal of both subjective splitness and the structural deadlock. Chen argues that in paternal adoption narratives writing does not emerge as a …

Subjectivity In 'Attār's Shaykh Of San'Ān Story In The Conference Of The Birds, Claudia Yaghoobi
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Subjectivity in 'Attār’s Shaykh of San'ān Story in The Conference of the Birds" Claudia Yaghoobi discusses intersections of transgression, law, inclusion and exclusion, self and Other in Farīd al-Dīn 'Attār's (1142?-ca.1220) treatment of religion with regard to Shaykh San'ān and the Christian girl's love story in The Conference of the Birds. San'ān is an ascetic master who has never transgressed any of the Islamic laws until he embarks on a journey from Mecca to Rome after a dream only to fall in love with a Christian girl, convert to Christianity, and begin drinking wine and …
Conservative Evolution, Sustainability, And Culture, Gábor Náray-Szabó
Conservative Evolution, Sustainability, And Culture, Gábor Náray-Szabó
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Conservative Evolution, Sustainability, and Culture" Gábor Náray-Szabó argues that evolution is conservative in the sense that throughout the history of the universe old constructs like elementary particles, amino acids, and living cells remained conserved while the world evolved/evolves in complexity. A similar process can be observed in cultural evolution as components of society and culture continue to evolve. Considering the increasing pressure on natural resources by material consumption, a close alliance between past, present, and future generations is unavoidable and thus Náray-Szabó posits that concepts of conservative evolution and sustainability are related. However, in order to avoid …
Duvakin's Oral History And Bakhtin In His Own Voice, Slav N. Gratchev, Tatevik Gyulamiryan
Duvakin's Oral History And Bakhtin In His Own Voice, Slav N. Gratchev, Tatevik Gyulamiryan
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Duvakin's Oral History and Bakhtin in His Own Voice" Slav N. Gratchev and Tatevik Gyulamiryan examine Mikhail Bakhtin's notions of literary theory based on interviews recorded by Victor Duvakin in 1973. The collection is now held in the library of Moscow State University. As it so often happened in the Soviet Union, these unique interviews only became known many years later and Gratchev's and Gyulamiryan's analysis of the interviews sheds light on Bakhtin's thought not available when reading his published work.

Modern African Verse And The Politics Of Authentication, Gabriel S. Bamgbose
Modern African Verse And The Politics Of Authentication, Gabriel S. Bamgbose
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Modern African Verse and the Politics of Authentication" Gabriel S. Bamgbose argues that the authenticity of modern African poetry is marked by the intricate tie between African verse and African life in its diversities and complexities. Bamgbose examines the "modern" nature of African poetry, its oral roots, its treatment of colonial, and cultural nationalist issues, its issues of négritude, language, radical consciousness, gender, and its "international" nature. Bamgbose draws on the poetry of Okot p'Bitek, Taban Lo Liyong, and Frank Chipasula of East Africa, Tchikaya U Tam'si, Tati Loutard, and Gahlia Gwangwa'a of Central Africa, and …
Intertextuality In Beckett's And Ağaoğlu's Work, Elmas Şahín
Intertextuality In Beckett's And Ağaoğlu's Work, Elmas Şahín
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Intertextuality in Beckett's and Ağaoğlu's Work" Elmas Şahín discusses Adalet Ağaoğlu's 1973 novel Ölmeye Yatmak (Lying Down to Die) and Samuel Beckett's 1950 Malone Dies in terms of intertextuality. Şahín employs tenets of comparative literature in order to analyze the two texts with regard to form and content and focuses on the on protagonists' worlds. In Şahín's interpretation, Ağaoğlu's protagonist Aysel is narrated in postmodern intertextuality as an individual of our days alienated from society, searching for her self/selves as she cannot succeed in dying. Both Beckett's and Ağaoğlu's protagonists attempt to "escape" from their selves and …

Embodied Cognition And The Grotesque In Calvino's La Giornata D'Uno Scrutatore And Sanguineti's Capriccio Italiano, Marco Caracciolo
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Embodied Cognition and the Grotesque in Calvino's La giornata d'uno scrutatore and Sanguineti's Capriccio italiano" Marco Caracciolo analyzes the multiple dimensions of embodied experience and how they can be brought to bear on literary texts. Drawing on scholarship in cognitive science, he argues that the embodiment of people's engagement with the world emerges from the interaction between the physical structure of the body and socio-cultural practices. Caracciolo shows how such nexus of biological make-up and culture can give rise to particularly complex meanings in the representation of grotesque bodies. In order to illustrate his postulates, Caracciolo …

Laughter And The Cosmopolitan Aesthetic In Lao She's 二马 (Mr. Ma And Son), Jeffrey Mather
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Laughter and the Cosmopolitan Aesthetic in Lao She's 二马 (Mr. Ma and Son)" Jeffrey Mather discusses Lao She's (pseudonym for Qingchun Shu 1899-1966) texts and their naturalist portrayals of social life in China during a tumultuous period. Lao She's most celebrated works include the 1937 novel 骆驼祥子 (Rickshaw Boy) and the 1958 play 茶馆 (Teahouse), both of which were made into films in China. Rickshaw Boy was translated into English in 1945 and became an international bestseller, making Lao She one of the first modern Chinese writers known in the West. …
The Pastor: Forming A Shared Vocational Vision, Skip Bell
The Pastor: Forming A Shared Vocational Vision, Skip Bell
Faculty Publications
Who defines the vocat i o n a l v i s i o n fo r pastoral ministry? Is it the employing denomination? Is it the congregation the pastor serves? Is it the church board? Is it the demand of the moment—preaching, evangelism, mission, church planting? Is it the Great Commission? Or is it the One who gives the commission? The purpose of this article is to discover a biblical foundation for a pastoral vision. Such a foundation offers the hope of transcending differing perspectives while relating to the various expectations of the church and broader community. Articulating a …
