"They Are Not Gods!" Jewish And Christian Idol Polemic And Greco-Roman Use Of Cult Statues, Nijay K. Gupta
"They Are Not Gods!" Jewish And Christian Idol Polemic And Greco-Roman Use Of Cult Statues, Nijay K. Gupta
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Excerpt: "One set of trademark convictions of early Judaism and Christianity includes their aniconic tradition, monotheistic commitment, and polemic against idols. In the late second or early third century c .e ., for example, Christian apologist Minucius Felix mocked pagan idol worship with these words: “When does the god come into being? The image is cast, hammered, or sculpted; it is not yet a god. It is soldered, put together, and erected; it is still not a god. It is adorned, consecrated, prayed to—and now, finally, it is a god once man has willed it so and dedicated it” (see …

Excerpt: "Nathan and I (Dan) pulled into the Mbanhela community in the Gaza province of Mozambique and were greeted by the high-spirited singing of six women who form the livestock association of that small community. A Christian relief and development organization, of which Nathan is the country director, provided funds for a large chicken coop, feed, supplies, and 300 chickens for the Mbanhela community. In addition, it furnished training in basic animal husbandry and marketing. Every two months the community starts a new cycle with 320 chicks. Raising chickens for income empowers that community and helps it toward health and …
Reflections On The Potential Of Gender Theory For North American Pentecostal History, Linda M. Ambrose, Leah Payne
Reflections On The Potential Of Gender Theory For North American Pentecostal History, Linda M. Ambrose, Leah Payne
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
In this article we show how gender is a useful category of analysis for students of North American pentecostal history. First, we provide a working definition ofthe term gender (a term with a plethora of meanings!). Then we cite a few examples from current scholarship that demonstrate how gender as a theoretical construct illuminates certain aspects of the North American movement. Finally, we reflect on the potential benefit of using gender to recount a variety of pentecostal histories, both North American and beyond.
Korean Preaching, Han, And Narrative (American University Studies. Series Vii. Theology And Religion), Rebecca S. Jeong
Korean Preaching, Han, And Narrative (American University Studies. Series Vii. Theology And Religion), Rebecca S. Jeong
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
In Korean Preaching, Han, and Narrative, the main point of Sangyil Park makes is that “Korean narrative preaching demands such an artistic, transformative, imagination to bring a healing and transforming effect to the han-ridden minjung in Korean culture (70).” In other words, he proposes Korean narrative preaching as an alternative to kerygmatic preaching in order to resolve the Korean minjung’s han. Eventually, his argument for Korean narrative preaching is the outcome of synthetic and theoretical dialogue with han theory, minjung theology, historical Korean narrative studies, and North American narrative homiletics.
Book Review: Preaching To Second Generation Korean Americans: Towards A Possible Selves Contextual Homiletic, Rebecca S. Jeong
Book Review: Preaching To Second Generation Korean Americans: Towards A Possible Selves Contextual Homiletic, Rebecca S. Jeong
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Matthew D. Kim in his Preaching to Second Generation Korean Americans provides a “possible selves contextual homiletic” for second generation Korean Americans who encounter unique bicultural and liminal experiences as an ethnic minority in American society. From a viewpoint of homiletic and practical theology, the intent of the book is “to create a contextual homiletical approach that facilitates Korean American preachers’ exegesis of their second generation Korean American congregant’s lived experiences and simultaneously encourage imaginative and innovative processes for cultivating new possible selves (3).” Put simply, his contextual preaching seeks to formulate the congregant’s positive future self-perception toward a radical …

The Right To Write; Or, Colley Cibber And The Drury-Lane Monster, Melissa Bloom Bissonette
English Faculty/Staff Publications
In lieu of an abstract, here is the chapter's first paragraph:
During the eighteenth century, it was a matter of some dispute whether Colley Cibber (1671-1757), actor, manger, playwright, and poet, had raised the business of theatre to an art or lowered the art of drama to a business. Though officially the King's servants, the Drury Lane actors and managers had always made their living by commercial success, not patronage. Yet Colley Cibber's very public attempts to turn a profit, please the public, and still rise in stature among men of letters, made him repeatedly the focus and emblem of …

Exposed Heads And Exposed Motives: Coverings As A Means To Unity At Corinth, April M. Hoelke
Exposed Heads And Exposed Motives: Coverings As A Means To Unity At Corinth, April M. Hoelke
MA in Religion Theses
This thesis argues that in 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 Paul asserts most centrally that women should wear head coverings while praying and prophesying in the Corinthian Christian assembly. I examine the honor and shame value system of the Greco-Roman world, both generally and in specific reference to head adornment, since head coverings and hairstyles were connected to honor and status. Then I look at Paul's treatment of honor and shame throughout 1 Corinthians, which denounces the worldly value system of status seeking in favor of the value system of the cross. Paul's stance leads him to subject cultural norms to gospel …

"I Am A Living Enigma - And You Want To Know The Right Reading Of Me": Gender Anxiety In Wilkie Collins's The Haunted Hotel And The Guilty River, Hannah Allford
MA in English Theses
This paper discusses gender anxiety in two of Wilkie Collins's novellas, The Haunted Hotel and The Guilty River. As each of Collins's novella was written near the turn of the nineteenth century, commonly known as the Fin de Siècle, the author explores the social construction - and subsequent subverting - of Victorian notions of genderideology in each text. Arguing that the novella's emphasis on marginalized characters demands scholarly attention and literary worth, the author next investigates three discourses through which traditional genderspheres are subverted. In examining each novella's use of embedded narratives, discussion of science (specifically chemicals), and portrayal of …

The Connection Between Stakeholder Theory And Stakeholder Democracy: An Excavation And Defense, Jeffrey Moriarty
The Connection Between Stakeholder Theory And Stakeholder Democracy: An Excavation And Defense, Jeffrey Moriarty
Philosophy Faculty Publications
In early writings, stakeholder theorists supported giving all stakeholders formal, binding control over the corporation, in particular, over its board of directors. In recent writings, however, they claim that stakeholder theory does not require changing the current structure of corporate governance and further claim to be “agnostic” about the value of doing so. This article’s purpose is to highlight this shift and to argue that it is a mistake. It argues that, for instrumental reasons, stakeholder theorists should support giving all stakeholders control over the corporation, in the form of control over its board. That is, stakeholder theorists should support …

Nashe’S Poem For Ferdinando Stanley, Lord Strange, Jennifer L. Andersen
Nashe’S Poem For Ferdinando Stanley, Lord Strange, Jennifer L. Andersen
English Faculty Publications
Of "The Choise of Valentines," editor R. B. McKerrow says, "There can, I fear, be little doubt that this poem is the work of ThomasNashe" (V, 141). From the 1590s through the seventeenth century, the poem was not printed but was circulated privately in manuscript copies among a select coterie audience. Five of six extant manuscript copies begin with a dedicatory sonnet, one of which includes a dedication "To the right Honorable the lord S." and another 'To the right HonourableLordStrainge" (Beal 356), offering clues to the specific coterie for which the poem was composed. Although some editors and critics …

Gilgamesh, Enkidu, And The Civilizing Mission: A Political Irony In The Gilgamesh Epic [Part I And Ii], Ekaputra Tupamahu
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
The Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the most famous epic stories from ancient times. Benjamin Foster is right that the Gilgamesh Epic “offers a splendor of language, imagery, themes, and ideas to the modern reader.”1 This epic story has been translated into many different modern languages, and as well as into a cartoon movie, a children’s storybook, etc.2 Many scholarly books, articles, and essays have been dedicated to investigate, examine, and interpret its meaning.3 This said, this paper is written to examine particularly the relationship between two main characters of the narrative, namely Gilgamesh and Enkidu. …
