The Role Of Public Relations In Social Capital And Civic Engagement, Weiwu Zhang, Alan Abitbol Jan 2014

The Role Of Public Relations In Social Capital And Civic Engagement, Weiwu Zhang, Alan Abitbol

Communication Faculty Publications

Public relations scholars have increasingly argued for the broader role of public relations and strategic communication in society (e.g., Taylor, 2010). That is, how can knowledge of public relations be used to make society better rather than simply making organizations more effective? This study examines how different types of public relations and strategic communication efforts contribute to citizens’ social capital and civic engagement. Specifically, this study uses data from the 2010 Pew Internet and American Life Project ‘Social Side of the Internet’ survey to examine the relationship between various strategic communication efforts by social, civic, professional, and religious organizations and …

Hair It Is: Examining The Experiences Of Black Women With Natural Hair, Tabora A. Johnson, Teiahsha Bankhead

Publications and Research

Who am I and how do I feel about who I am, are essential questions that help define and construct identity. For Black women and girls, identity is inextricably linked to their relationship to and presentation of their hair. Our research presents findings from an Internet based survey con- ducted with 529 Black women exploring their experiences when wearing their hair in its natural state (not thermally or chemically straightened). These are preliminary findings from the study with reference to the composition of the study participants and how they responded to key ques- tions related to how they perceived when …

Carlos Saura Y La Relativización De La Historia Y La Memoria Antes De La Transición, Luis Guadaño

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

"LOVE THEM, HATE THEM, feed and obsess about them as we do, our bodies are our interface with each other and the physical world. They’re the often astonishing and perpetually intriguing vessels that hold who we are. When you think about the body in the context of art, it’s almost impossible to separate one from the other— just as it’s impossible to separate the body from considerations of health and health care. They’re all inextricably intertwined. . .". From the editor's message by Liisa Silander

Structure As Interpretation In The Homeric Odyssey, Erwin F. Cook Jan 2014

Structure As Interpretation In The Homeric Odyssey, Erwin F. Cook

Classical Studies Faculty Research

The Odyssey is structured through a series of ring-compositions. Although scholars have ubiquitously identified ring-compositions in Homer, the technique has not been adequately theorized. This paper argues that the ring structures contribute to a thematic development that assimilates Odysseus’ return into natural cycles, and implicitly promise prosperity to those who properly receive the narrative and even immortality to those who imitate its heroes. The poem even enacts the theme of Return by bringing the past vividly into the present. This use of a conventional pattern to direct audience reception distinguishes Greek epic from the oral epic traditions worldwide that it …

Like The Odyssey, Only Different: Olympian Omnipotence Versus Karmic Adjustment In Pynchon's Vineland, David P. Rando Jan 2014

Like The Odyssey, Only Different: Olympian Omnipotence Versus Karmic Adjustment In Pynchon's Vineland, David P. Rando

English Faculty Research

In Vineland, Pynchon recalls the Odyssey in order to foreground crucial differences from its Western model of comprehending narrative outcomes as acts of Olympian or divine omnipotence. Instead, Vineland does something innovative with narrative power, establishing specific karmic character relationships that potentially ameliorate personal and national grievances and suffering and broadening our understanding of narrative power and outcomes beyond the heavy hand of judgment in order to register gentle karmic nudges.

Appendix Ii: Marked Pottery At Pyla-Kokkinokremos, 2010-2011, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld

Classical Studies Faculty Research

Seven marked vases or vase fragments were discovered in the course of the 2010-2011 excavation season at Pyla-Kokkinokremos. Six are handles with incised marks and there is a Mycenaean pictorial amphoroid krater with two marks painted on its lower body. Two of the marks occur on Cypriote pottery (Plain White jugs), two on imported pottery (Minoan and Mycenaean amphoroid kraters); the three marked amphoras are also probably imported. Of special significance are the inscription (no. 72) and the amphoroid krater with painted marks found in a non-funerary context (no. 76).
