Unfolding, Christian Vuissa, Stanley Ferguson
Unfolding, Christian Vuissa, Stanley Ferguson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
For my last film project at BYU, I wanted to do something special that would help me get started in the film industry. Unfolding is a film that explores the struggle of a young woman. She learns to reconnect with her father who suffers from retrograde amnesia. The project was ambitious from its beginning due to its length and the many different props and locations needed for its realization. The scope of the project could easily compare to a masters program thesis film.

The Turning Tide Of Animation, Jamie Titera, Brent Adams, Kelli Loosli
Journal of Undergraduate Research
After researching the topic and after listening to the many voices of experience a few things became readily apparent. Perhaps most important was the perspective of my project. I approached the project with the intent of trying to isolate traditional animation from 3D animation and find out the future of both. After attending the annual SIGGRAPH computer graphics conference in San Antonio, speaking with many people in the industry, and becoming more involved myself it is clear that things are not as black and white as they first appeared to me. Mark Thomas, president, Right Hemisphere, “ I think the …

The Evolution Of Attitudes Towards Doctors As Shown In American Art, Karrie K. Warnick, Dr. Martha Peacock

The halls of the Pennsylvania Hospital, the first hospital in the United States, are decorated with portraits of physicians. In fact, many of the portraits were done by now-famous American Artists like Benjamin West, Thomas Sully, and Thomas Eakins. A tour of the hospital would also include the first surgical amphitheatre, where Dr. Phillip Syng Physick performed operations by the light from a skylight beginning in 1804. Visitors to this hospital, like me, are instilled with a sense of the grand history of medicine, and its advances in the last two hundred years. Unfortunately, what the hospital’s art collection doesn’t …
Mid-Range Reduction Glaze Development, Laura Lund Pierce, Von Allen
Mid-Range Reduction Glaze Development, Laura Lund Pierce, Von Allen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As the final surface of a piece, glazes give ceramic works their vitality through color and texture, and creating a glaze itself can be an art. Mid-range reduction glazes are fired at a mid-range temperature in a kiln where the oxygen supply is reduced during the firing. Reducing the amount of oxygen available to the flames, done by closing the vents, forces them to get oxygen from the glazes instead. This chemical reaction dramatically changes the outcome of the glaze. This is only possible in a kiln with a flame, such as a gas or wood kiln, as opposed to …

La Abundancia: The Nivacle People, Seth O. Smoot, John Telford
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Nivacle are an indigenous people who live in the sparsely populated, densely vegetated Chaco area in Northern Paraguay. Formerly known as the Chulupi, the Nivacle have lived for thousands of years in the region that lies between Bolivia and Brazil. They primarily lived a hunter/gatherer existence until the beginning of the twentieth century, when Europeans from recently settled nearby Mennonite colonies offered work opportunities to the Nivacle men at dairy collectives, cattle ranches, and farms. The women and men retain traditional customs and practices such as the artisan craft of weaving and wood carving.

Jared Miller A Pictorial Perspective of Isaiah Faculty Mentors: Victor Ludlow, Ancient Scripture and Jason Zimmer, Visual Arts Taking a pictorial perspective of Isaiah, and glimpsing the visions of his painted poetry had always seemed to personally open a window of understanding to his words and prophecies. Therefore this project focuses on taking Isaiah, his messianic message, his own persona, and prophecies and expressing them visually, that “[we might more clearly] with [our] eyes… and understand with [our] hearts and be converted and healed” (Isaiah 6:10).
James Tissot: The Prussian Flag, Philipp Malzl, Dr. Martha Peacock
James Tissot: The Prussian Flag, Philipp Malzl, Dr. Martha Peacock
Journal of Undergraduate Research
James Tissot was a French nineteenth-century painter who spent a great deal of his creative life in London. During those years he repeatedly chose to make the Prussian flag a somewhat conceiled, central motive in several of his paintings. The Ball on Shipboard (1874) is the most obvious example. What makes this practice peculiar is the fact that Prussia had overwhelmingly defeated France in the Franco-Prussian war only four years earlier. Thus, the pivotal question for my research was why Tissot would honor the victor over his homeland with this gesture.

Computers and the arts are increasingly finding their place together today. In fact, the line between what is art has also changed amid this technological age. With the advent and user capability of computers it is now possible for artist and programmers to come together. The multimedia program here at BYU is in its infancy, however, we do see the different fields like Theater Media Arts, Industrial Design and Visual Art pulling their heads and their pockets together. This is not all. The media arts in the working world have crossed over boarders. For instance, the National Association of Broadcasting …

Experimental Wood Sculpture, Will Mahoney, Brian Christensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Wood is a sculpting medium that possesses a natural beauty, a beauty which can be enhanced by manipulation. Wood facilitates much creativity in form, has inherent strength, but can also exhibit construction limitations. One of the objectives driving this research project was to broaden the usage of wood in the field of sculpture.

Collaboration In The Arts, Rebeca Dawn Peterson, Murray Boren
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Part of being an artist is being misunderstood. Being an artist myself, I have found that it doesn’t matter what form your art manifests itself, there is commonality among all artists if you choose to recognize it. Collaboration in the arts is something that can have positive and/or negative effects, but is something that should be encouraged, especially among students.

This post is the first in a series on how comics artists represent talk in comics. I’ll be writing about speech balloons and how the discipline of conversation analysis (CA) helps us understand how creative these artists can be when they try to show the intricacies of everyday talk.
Consider the following two panels. These are from the webcomic Scenes from a Multiverse by Jon Rosenberg. (Click on each of the titles to see the full comic.)

French composer Francis Poulenc said “The setting to music of a poem must be an act of love, never a marriage of convenience.”1 As I searched for a thesis topic, it was ultimately love for T. S. Eliot’s work that led me to create these musical settings of his text. I have loved Eliot since I was in second grade, when my oldest brother Kenneth memorized T. S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” He recited it for me, and though I did not understand exactly what the poem meant, I was immediately captivated by the mood …

Building Purpose: Architectural Validation Of Sir Lawrence Alma- Tadema’S Spring, Jessica R. Weiss, Dr. Heather Belnap-Jensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s 1894 work Spring depicts a typical Mayday festival, in which young girls go out into the country to gather flowers. However, instead of rendering the splendors of Victorian London, he portrays the scene as a traditional Roman festival. Alma Tadema has placed great importance on the architectural aspects of his work, as is proved by its prevalence in the composition. The Romans took great pride in building design evidenced by modern ruins that have withstood generations; buildings were carefully constructed to worship the Gods or house athletic competition. At the time the painting was produced, Roman culture …

Oral History Of The Emergence Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Republic Of Slovenia, Bethany Durham, Dr. Blair Holmes
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Growing up a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah, I never thought it was significant that my ward had its own building to meet in. I never thought it was significant that I belonged to a ward with several hundred active members to meet with. Members of the church in the Republic of Slovenia, however, have a much different experience. The purpose of my project was to document the unique experiences of the pioneer members of the LDS Church in the Republic of Slovenia.

Career, Education, Home & Family: Decision-Making Among Lds Women, Jennifer M. Vigil, Dr. Bonnie Ballif-Spanvill
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As women are given more and more options about the course of their lives, the choices become more complicated. When a woman’s level of religiosity becomes a factor, the decision-making process becomes even more complex. This paper will show how young women who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) make their decisions. It will look at their commitment to a single role, how they plan to follow in their mothers’ footsteps, the knowledge and certainty women feel about the decisions they make, how involved they are in the decision-making process, and the influence of …

Giant Steps: Essential Saxophone Recordings On Compact Disc, Bret Pimentel, Ray Smith
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Because the saxophone is a relatively young instrument (invented in the 1840’s), sound recording technology has been available to document much of its history. The saxophone’s importance in jazz music has promoted extensive recording of hundreds of saxophonists since the 1920’s. Increased interest in the saxophone in conservatories and university music departments in the past several decades has fueled the recording of contemporary concert soloists, as well as renewing interest in recordings of the early virtuosos. The saxophone’s adaptability to popular styles has also produced a windfall of recordings. Many of the finest of these recordings are currently available in …

Unwilling Soldaten: The Story Of Slovene Conscripts In Hitler’S Army, Stacy Snider, Thomas Russell

“[They said] we were called by the Furer and by God to help defend our home.”
So they were told, but of the 90,000 Slovene men, young and old, forced from their provincial homes and into German uniforms at the beginning of WWII, few were convinced. Swayed instead by commanders with rifles, threats to life and family, and stories of torture, hanging, even beheading, nearly one fifth the population of the tiny European country chose hell over death and became part of Hitler’s expansive and short-lived military force between 1942 and 1945.
