Aubade, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2013-2014 Raise the Bar

For his entire career, Douglas Dunn has done it his way – all the way. Now, witness his next surprising pivot forward. Aubade, his new dance/theater piece, is all about apprehending mortality and the unstoppable progress of time. All the senses engage with scenic and video design, music, and lyrics by noted artists Charles Atlas, Steven Taylor, and Anne Waldman, respectively. As if that wasn’t enough, Douglas Dunn’s amazing company expands to even greater numbers by casting six Montclair State College of the Arts dance students. The title refers to the classic “aubade”, the opposite of a serenade. At its …

Fearless: Emily Hauck, Emily G. Hauck Jan 2014

Fearless: Emily Hauck, Emily G. Hauck

SURGE

Beginning with an interest in Spanish language that led her to Argentina and Spain, Emily decided to use the language skills she acquired during her gap year after high school and time spent studying abroad to get herself connected to the Latino community in Adams County. Volunteering with different organizations and programs like the LIU #12 Migrant Education Programs, Casa de la Cultura, and El Centro, Emily started seeing the big picture—making connections between the immigration stories, people she was meeting, and the greater national dialogue on immigration issues. Moving Panamanian History Into The Twenty-First Century: Putting The Belisario Porras Collection On-Line, Caryj Mouritsen Cherry, Thomas L. Pearcy

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As we saw in 1997 with the return of Hong Kong to mainland China, great international interest arises over the transferral of ownership rights from one country to another. Attention surged around the history surrounding the British occupation of Hong Kong and the decisions that both Britain and China effected in order to come to this momentous occasion. In the case of Hong Kong, thousands watched and wondered what the result of the transfer to China would mean to their booming, capitalist economy. On December 31, 1999, the Panama Canal will exchange hands and return to Panamanian control. This event …

An Exploration In Learning, Thayer Jonutz, Rebecca Wright Phillips Jan 2014

An Exploration In Learning, Thayer Jonutz, Rebecca Wright Phillips

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Dance instructors teach using different methods. The three most common pedagogical practices are by imitation, imagery and the use of kinesiological principles. Teaching by imitation consists of showing the student what it is you are trying to teach with very little verbal communication and then having the student mimic you. There are different forms of imagery and I chose to explore sensory imagery specifically. Sensory imagery is the use of all the senses: sight, touch, hear, smell, taste. Teaching by sensory imagery consists of using the five senses to bring out different qualities in the movement. Teaching by dance kinesiology …

Polish Folk Art Since The Fall Of Communism, William Badger, Walter Whipple Jan 2014

Polish Folk Art Since The Fall Of Communism, William Badger, Walter Whipple

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the Second World War, Poland’s occupiers ravaged whole collections of her folk art, alternatively destroying them or carting them off as wartime spoils. Then, in Communist times, the folk arts experienced an unexpected renaissance. The state fostered folk art through numerous incentive programs including pensions for the artists and periodic nationwide folk carving contests, which boasted cash prizes as well as prestige.

Re-Scripting Mexican-Americans In Chicana/O Juvenile Literature, Xóchitl Michaela Anson, Dr. Trenton Hickman Jan 2014

Re-Scripting Mexican-Americans In Chicana/O Juvenile Literature, Xóchitl Michaela Anson, Dr. Trenton Hickman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Previous to this project I gathered information (photographs, newspaper articles and reviews, advertisements, and dime novels) interrogating misconceptions and stereotypes of Mexican- Americans that have dominated the American literary canon for at least the last two centuries. For this project I focused primarily on 20th century Chicana/o texts in two fundamental ways. Firstly, I considered particular political, social and economic events directly affecting Mexican- Americans and how much these events account for the flood of Chicana/o texts throughout the Chicano movement to the present. Secondly, by combining my first directive with my previous research, I expected to better identify the …

The Ritual Use Of Music In Ancient Israelite Worship, Mindy J. Anderson, Dr. Stephen D. Ricks Jan 2014

The Ritual Use Of Music In Ancient Israelite Worship, Mindy J. Anderson, Dr. Stephen D. Ricks

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Music was an important part of the ancient Israelite worship experience. The Hebrew Bible includes multiple references to music, including verses which specifically associate music with prophecy and temple ritual. Within the Israelite religious hierarchy, certain Levites were set apart as musicians to aid worshippers in keeping divine commands to remember and offer thanksgiving to the LORD. A Levitical choir and orchestra, composed of lyres, harps, cymbals, and trumpets accompanied the daily sacrifices at the temple. The psalms accompanied these ritual acts as the Israelites gathered in holy places and invoked the name of the LORD. Israelite worshippers sang songs …

Dorothea Schlegel (1764-1839): Uncovering An Unheard Voice In The German Romantic Literary World, Amanda Rose Bingham, Dr. Cindy Brewer Jan 2014

Dorothea Schlegel (1764-1839): Uncovering An Unheard Voice In The German Romantic Literary World, Amanda Rose Bingham, Dr. Cindy Brewer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While women have received focused attention in the recent decades, the early romantic German writer, Dorothea Mendelssohn Veit Schlegel, has not had proportionate consideration from literary critics. Modern readers of German literature are likely to be most familiar with the canonical texts such as Goethe, Schiller, Lessing, primarily written by men, whereas these texts may have received less attention when published. Texts by many women writers of that same time period are considered by many scholars today to be trivial literature although they had much wider readership. The texts resonated with the general public and can provide greater cultural insights.

Casting Calder: Using Choreography In Dance To Express The Works Of Alexander C, Rhonda Rooker, Raymond Robinson

Alexander Calder, one of the greatest creators of sculpture in the twentieth century, was the first American artist of his generation to win an international reputation for his achievements. He spent his lifetime creating works labeled “mobiles” and “stabiles”, according to the size and permanency of each sculpture. He used various materials including sheet metal, bolts, and paint, as well as wire and wood. His artwork can be found in major museums throughout the world, and is installed in urban spaces in the United States and abroad.

International Harp Archives Website, Kimberly Isom, David A. Day

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The International Harp Archives at Brigham Young University has attracted the attention of many harpists from around the world. Recently it has received acknowledgement at conferences held in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Geneva, Switzerland. The Archives have also been introduced to the American Harp Society in their last semiannual journal. The International Harp Archives has one of the largest collections of harp materials. It has photographs, manuscripts, recordings, harp scores, and many more valuable items. One concern the Archives has is how to make it more accessible to harpists throughout the world. This year I have worked on a website …

Rhetoric And Theology In Bach’S St. John Passion, Rebecca C. Buchert, James L. Siebach Jan 2014

Rhetoric And Theology In Bach’S St. John Passion, Rebecca C. Buchert, James L. Siebach

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Johann Sebastian Bach was completely Lutheran in his world view, and Luther was thoroughly Augustinian both in his theology and theory of rhetoric. St. Augustine’s views on the purpose of rhetoric are exemplified in Bach’s St. John Passion. In On Christian Doctrine,1 St. Augustine outlines three elements of communicating the truth: docere (to teach), delectare (to please) and movere/flectere (to move). Bach employs all of these elements in his compositional practice.

Preservation And Restoration Of Music Through Digitization, Johnathan A. Scharf, David A. Day Jan 2014

Preservation And Restoration Of Music Through Digitization, Johnathan A. Scharf, David A. Day

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Recorded music has existed for more than a century yet, until recently, the media on which this music is preserved degrades with each passing year. Additionally, the very use of the recording itself adds to its degradation and does irreparable damage. It is a major concern for an institution that archives such media to find a method that permits the enjoyment of early recordings without subjecting them to further damage. Moreover, a means of restoring degraded recordings would permit a long-term solution for circulating such work. Through the use of computer technology, these goals can be achieved. It is now …
