Maybe I'M The Problem, Chelsea E. Broe Jan 2014

Maybe I'M The Problem, Chelsea E. Broe

SURGE

Being raised in the United States, I internalized racist, sexist, transphobic, heterosexist, classist, ableist, and faithist ways of thinking. And by this, I do not simply mean that I was taught to hate people of color, queer individuals, working class people, or people of different religions. This indoctrination runs much deeper than that. Don't Underestimate The Power Of Pleasure Reading, Jeffrey D. Wilhelm, Michael W. Smith Jan 2014

Don't Underestimate The Power Of Pleasure Reading, Jeffrey D. Wilhelm, Michael W. Smith

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

A recent study by David Comer Kidd and Emanuele Castano of The New School for Social Research in New York City argues that reading literary fiction (as compared with reading popular fiction, or nothing at all) temporarily enhances one's ability to understand others' mental states and deepens empathy. The study—published in the journal Science in October—grabbed a lot of attention, including a front-page article in The New York Times.

Frederic, Lord Leighton: A Look At The Development Of An Important Artist, Angela Swanson Jones, Dr. Mark Magleby Jan 2014

Frederic, Lord Leighton: A Look At The Development Of An Important Artist, Angela Swanson Jones, Dr. Mark Magleby

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Understanding the education of an artist has always been a major focus in the study of the history of art. Asking and answering questions about an artist’s development helps historians to interpret the artist’s message, ability, and influence upon his or her contemporaries. For these reasons I became interested in the teacher-pupil relationship of one of the greatest artists of the Victorian age, Frederic Lord Leighton (1830-1886) and his Nazarene instructor Edward von Steinle (1810-1886). Leighton’s style underwent a dramatic change from 1850 to 1852 when he was a student of Steinle in Frankfurt. The impact that this master had …

Time Vindicated: Looking Behind The Masque, Amy Elizabeth Jensen, Dr. Megan Sanborn Jones Jan 2014

Time Vindicated: Looking Behind The Masque, Amy Elizabeth Jensen, Dr. Megan Sanborn Jones

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The English courtly masque was an elaborate theatrical form of poetry, dance, music, and scenery that flourished under the reign of the Stuarts, James (1603–1625) and Charles I (1625– 1649). The masque’s spectacle, both highly theatrical and financially extravagant, reflected the magnificence of the king and the ideals of the court. Courtiers and royalty took part on stage as well as in the audience. The masques were also self-reflective; attention moved between the audience and the performers as each watched the other. As masque writer Ben Jonson wrote, masques were “the mirrors of man’s life.” Through the masque’s unique relationship …

Postmodern Funhouse: The Sly Underpinnings Of Hitchcock’S Psycho, Jacob T. Bart Jan 2014

Postmodern Funhouse: The Sly Underpinnings Of Hitchcock’S Psycho, Jacob T. Bart

Cinesthesia

Although his filmography is studded with gems, no other Hitchcock film has lodged itself in the popular consciousness as firmly as Psycho. It provides chills as a ripped-from-the-headlines slasher flick, but the macabre surfaces conceal its deeper, mordant cultural resonances. In Psycho, many of Hitchcock’s major tactics fall under the umbrella of postmodernism. These methods include, but are not limited to, Hitch’s specific focus on developing a playful mood, his exploration of levels of audience participation within the confines of a film, and his preoccupation with surfaces. Although made within the confines of the last vestiges of the classic Hollywood …

The Realism Of Space In Black Swan, Raquel Bordin Jan 2014

The Realism Of Space In Black Swan, Raquel Bordin

Cinesthesia

The camera pans from the shattered pieces of a mirror to blood pouring from under the bathroom door. The sight of blood comes as no surprise to the audience, who has just witnessed Nina murder Lily in that very dressing room. It is later revealed that there is no blood and that the murder never occurred. Yet, the audience believes these scenes from Black Swan (Aronofsky, 2010) to be real because director Darren Aronofsky effectively evokes the story's illusions out of reality itself. An analytical study of Andre Bazin's realist theory demonstrates how Aronofsky is able to consciously manipulate mise-en-scene, …

The Cinematic Power Of Night And Fog, James M. Christie Jan 2014

The Cinematic Power Of Night And Fog, James M. Christie

Cinesthesia

A contemplative camera glides fluidly through a vacant field, one that appears like any other. As it glides, somber images of barbed wire, dilapidated barracks, and rusted railroad tracks beckon the audience to witness the ruins of the Aushwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. “Going slowly along the tracks, seeking what?” asks narrator Michel Bouquet. These questions are more rhetorical than anything, allowing the audience to question their own moral and social obligations to the unfathomable. For the sake of humanity, it is crucial to remember the events of the Holocaust and deny them from happening again. Released only ten years after the …

Los Papeles Del Infierno, Enrique Buenaventura, Carlos Gardeazábal Bravo

Global Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hieronymus Bosch’S Saint Giles Within The Hermit Saints Triptych, Kirsten Kakadelas Jan 2014

Hieronymus Bosch’S Saint Giles Within The Hermit Saints Triptych, Kirsten Kakadelas

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The mystery of Hieronymus Bosch’s intent has been debated for centuries. The iconography of his works poses many different questions and problems in determining his intent, meaning, and symbolism as an artist. Bosch encountered many different influences that had an effect and impact on his style and work. I set out to research the iconography of the panel of Saint Giles within the triptych of Hermit Saints by Hieronymus Bosch in the Ducal Palace in Venice. This research is helping my search in determining Bosch’s intent, meaning, symbolism, and influences in this panel.

The technological shifts in digital media have empowered individuals to create quality multimedia productions on a relatively limited budget. With the help of ORCA, I have been able to take a new direction with my art using digital sound and videotechnologies. I have spent the last year trying to learn how to use the new equipment in order to produce the art I have envisioned.

Preserving The Past Through Historic Clothing, Janae R. Judd, Mary Farahnakian Jan 2014

Preserving The Past Through Historic Clothing, Janae R. Judd, Mary Farahnakian

Journal of Undergraduate Research

What we wear reveals a great deal about us, not only as individuals, but also as a society. Likewise, historic clothing allows us to see into the past. For example, in the 1940s cloth was used for war efforts. To help conserve fabrics, women made straight skirts with little flare. Such a simple thing as a skirt helps us understand the past a little better. Over a year ago, the Costume Institute of Utah desired to donate their entire historic clothing collection to Brigham Young University. The university already has an existing collection, however it is limited and this addition …

Louis H. Sullivan: The Aesthetic Movement, Classical Monumentality And The Skyscraper, Yarger Colleen Truax Jan 2014

Louis H. Sullivan: The Aesthetic Movement, Classical Monumentality And The Skyscraper, Yarger Colleen Truax

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation looks at some of the most famous structures by talented and cryptic American architect Louis Sullivan (1856-1924) for fusions of Aesthetic Movement surfaces and two-part Classical Monumentality. For architects, the Aesthetic Movement allowed for a greater amount of freedom when it came to sources, massing, and ornament, which resulted in the creation of more highly textured surfaces than ever before. Under raking light, this texture produces some scintillating effects. Sullivan used this textural freedom throughout his career, creating some surfaces that sparkle. It will also be demonstrated that Sullivan changed his drawing style to better articulate his textural …

Learning To Write A Large-Scale Orchestra Piece, Nathan Bowen, Murray Boren Jan 2014

Learning To Write A Large-Scale Orchestra Piece, Nathan Bowen, Murray Boren

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As a student composer, I have one basic goal in mind: get as much experience writing for as many different instruments as possible. In assessing what would be most beneficial to my growth as a young composer, it became clear that writing a long piece for a large ensemble would be the right project. I proposed to write a ten minute piece for full orchestra.

The Symbolic Significance Of The Angel Gabriel’S Wings In Van Eyck’S Annunciation, Krisanne Hastings, Dr. Martha Peacock Jan 2014

The Symbolic Significance Of The Angel Gabriel’S Wings In Van Eyck’S Annunciation, Krisanne Hastings, Dr. Martha Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Jan Van Eyck’s Annunciation is rich with religious symbolism. The iconographic program of this Northern Renaissance masterpiece delves deeply into intellectual Christian motifs, referencing the royalty of the Virgin and Christ child, offering up a varied repertoire of Old and New Testament allusions, and alluding to Christ’s role on earth. Numerous scholars have addressed Van Eyck’s iconographic presentation, paying most specific attention to elements such as the architectural structure wherein the annunciation is taking place and the representation of biblical scenes. Despite the past intense investigation of Van Eyck’s piece, no scholar has mentioned the possible symbolism associated with the …

Symbols Of Heaven: An Analysis Of Iconographic Programs In Gothic Western Facades, Gerald Hansen Iii, Dr. Mark Johnson Jan 2014

Symbols Of Heaven: An Analysis Of Iconographic Programs In Gothic Western Facades, Gerald Hansen Iii, Dr. Mark Johnson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Gothic churches are vivid expressions of Catholic doctrine and local culture. Doctrinally churches have a similar basic purpose—to unite members of the community for the teaching of church doctrine and for the celebration of religious sacraments or holidays. However, each church often has additional unique functions based on religious, political, economic, or other factors of the era and region. One of the most important means by which a church illustrates these purposes is through the symbolic art and architecture decorating its interior and exterior. This church iconography is meant to communicate to the community the Catholic plan of salvation and …
