B. H. Schettler: The Personification Of Mormon Sainthood And Bankrupt “Buccaneer”, Jacob Wayne Olmstead, Dr. Ignacio Garcia Jan 2014

B. H. Schettler: The Personification Of Mormon Sainthood And Bankrupt “Buccaneer”, Jacob Wayne Olmstead, Dr. Ignacio Garcia

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Bernhard Herman Schettler strolled down the dusty streets of Salt Lake City for the first time in the autumn of 1861, after making the three and a half month journey from New York City. Having made favorable impressions on George Q. Cannon, Orson Pratt, and others as a young stalwart leader among the German and Swiss members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York, he was brimming with the possibilities of making a difference in Zion. Schettler was destined to make an impact; however, it was not the impact he had suspected in 1861.

Composing For The Orchestra: An Exercise In Decision Making, Benjamin Sabey, Dr. David Sargent Jan 2014

Composing For The Orchestra: An Exercise In Decision Making, Benjamin Sabey, Dr. David Sargent

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As a young, aspiring composer, writing for the orchestra has always been a desirable but intimidating goal. I knew that my first attempt would be fraught with obstacles and challenges. The first of these was one of purely logistical nature: the lack of orchestra that might play my piece. There aren’t many good orchestras lined up at my door waiting for me to write for them (yet). Thankfully, the Office of Research and Creative Activities provided an answer. With the grant that I received from ORCA I planned to hire good student instrumentalists and create my own orchestra. Thus, having …

Poetic Parallelism Of The Isaiah Scroll And The Book Of Mormon: Contributions To The King James Version, Mindy J. Anderson, Dr. Donald W. Parry

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The aim of this research is to show where the Book of Mormon Isaiah texts and the Isaiah Scroll complete parallelisms in the King James translation of Isaiah. The following represents a summary of my findings.

French Utopian Socialists Coming To America: The Transformation Of Etienne Cabet’S Icarian Colony In Nauvoo, John Mccorquindale, Dr. Daryl Lee Jan 2014

French Utopian Socialists Coming To America: The Transformation Of Etienne Cabet’S Icarian Colony In Nauvoo, John Mccorquindale, Dr. Daryl Lee

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While many of the definitively American utopian groups have received a good deal of curious attention in the past century, the Icarian colonies are relatively unknown. Maybe it is because of their less accessible French background, or because their iconoclastic leader Etienne Cabet (who once garnered 95, 000 votes in the French presidential elections), died in total obscurity, that this mysterious community has disappeared almost entirely from the American consciousness and social tapestry. Whatever the reason, a unique cultural collision that provides insight into the effects of location on beliefs and practices is often overlooked, by both historians and sociologists …

Implementing Videos And Dvds In Teaching Foreign Language Classes: A Need For A Strategy, Loredana Comparone Martin, Dr. Michael D. Bush Jan 2014

Implementing Videos And Dvds In Teaching Foreign Language Classes: A Need For A Strategy, Loredana Comparone Martin, Dr. Michael D. Bush

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Teaching authentic language in context has a vital role in foreign language instruction. Especially at an intermediate level, students need to be exposed to something other than simulated authentic discourse, defined by Geddes and White (1978) as “language produced with a pedagogical purpose.” (cited in Omaggio Hadley, 175)

Integration Of The Life And Works Of “O Aleijadinho” Into Brazilian Culture Courses, Ryan T. Miller, Dr. Willis Fails Jan 2014

Integration Of The Life And Works Of “O Aleijadinho” Into Brazilian Culture Courses, Ryan T. Miller, Dr. Willis Fails

Journal of Undergraduate Research

More commonly known as O Aleijadinho, Portuguese for “Little Cripple,” Antônio Francisco Lisboa is remembered as Brazil’s greatest artist of the colonial period. Born in 1730 to the son of a Portuguese craftsman and a black slave, Aleijadinho developed a degenerative condition—probably leprosy—that left him without the use of his hands. Aleijadinho’s suffering found a creative outlet in his work as a sculptor and architect. With a hammer and a chisel tucked under his arms, Aleijadinho designed churches and created highly expressive soapstone sculptures.

The Portuguese Presence In Early Cartographical Toponymics Of The United States, Jason Y. Moyes, Dr. Christopher C. Lund Jan 2014

The Portuguese Presence In Early Cartographical Toponymics Of The United States, Jason Y. Moyes, Dr. Christopher C. Lund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Although many individuals of varying nationalities are responsible for the eventual exploration and mapping of what is now the United States, it was the Portuguese who played the primary role in the discovery of the New World during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Portugueseborn and sponsored navigators were the first not only to explore the waters off the northeast coast of North America, but also the first to chart a route around the southern tip of South America, and eventually explore the coast of what is now California.

The Effects Of Modern Standard Arabic Immersion Programs Versus Traditional Preschool Attendance On The Reading And Composition Scores Of Arab Children, Jennifer Eschler, Dr. R. Kirk Belnap Jan 2014

The Effects Of Modern Standard Arabic Immersion Programs Versus Traditional Preschool Attendance On The Reading And Composition Scores Of Arab Children, Jennifer Eschler, Dr. R. Kirk Belnap

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is used for schooling and for writing in the Arab world, it is not the oral means of communication. Several dialects of Arabic exist. Each of these is related to Modern Standard Arabic, but vocabulary and some basic grammar rules differ according to geographic location. Although primary schools are conducted in MSA, most preschool instruction is in the local dialect or there is a combination of dialect and MSA with the amount of MSA varying according to school and instructor.

Poetry Of The River Tietê, Rex P. Nielson, Dr. George Handley Jan 2014

Poetry Of The River Tietê, Rex P. Nielson, Dr. George Handley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In an essay entitled “Quantity and Quality” written in 1990, Nobel Laureate Octavio Paz bespeaks the importance of poetry in our contemporary society. He contends that during classical times poetry provided an ethical code that significantly influenced the organization of society and government. Greek citizens memorized lines of Homer, Hebrew leaders quoted passages from the Torah and the Psalms, Roman Senators learned verse from the Aeneid, and Chinese emperors recited poems from the Shih Ching. “Our classics, apart from their being examples of formal perfection and sources of spiritual pleasure, were teachers of political wisdom for two millennia” (Paz 105). …

Messianic History: Reading The Lectures On Faith, Adam Scott Miller, Dr. Ed Cutler Jan 2014

Messianic History: Reading The Lectures On Faith, Adam Scott Miller, Dr. Ed Cutler

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Writing history is about producing meaningful constellations of past and present events. The task of the historian is to survey the past in search of neglected texts and images that align with and illuminate the needs of the present era. For Mormonism, the Lectures on Faith are capable of producing such a constellation. The Lectures remind us of inherent tensions and possibilities that the familiar movement of time easily conceals. Their now marginal status provides them with a certain kind of intimate distance from which to view both our past and present.

Apollo’S Ghost: Joseph Conrad’S Father As Kurtz Prototype, Peter M. Jasinski, Dr. John S. Tanner Jan 2014

Apollo’S Ghost: Joseph Conrad’S Father As Kurtz Prototype, Peter M. Jasinski, Dr. John S. Tanner

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Though he became one of England’s greatest writers, Joseph Conrad was a native of Poland. His father, Apollo Korzeniowski, was a writer, Polish patriot, and martyr for his country. For this grant, I proposed to research the plausibility of Apollo as a prototype for one of Conrad’s most complex characters: Kurtz of Heart of Darkness. Prior to receiving the ORCA grant, I had written a paper with this thesis and submitted it to Conradiana, a leading peer-reviewed Conrad journal. In response, I received a letter from the editor and comments from a reviewer, both confirming that my argument …

Defining Gender Differences In Suriname Through Language, Shaun Hunley, Dr. David Bowie Jan 2014

Defining Gender Differences In Suriname Through Language, Shaun Hunley, Dr. David Bowie

Journal of Undergraduate Research

For the people of Suriname, the word “Sranan” is more than just a word, it is a symbol of national pride and independence. “Sranan” is the native word for Suriname, a small country on the northeastern coast of South America. Throughout its remarkable history, Suriname has transformed into a nation rich in culture and values. Its unique society bears the scars of Dutch colonialism while absorbing facets of African, Indian, and Indonesian cultures.

Treatment Of Gender In Adolescent Fantasy Literature: An Analysis Of J.K. Rowling And Robin Mckinley, Amberly Draper, Dr. Joyce Nelson Jan 2014

Treatment Of Gender In Adolescent Fantasy Literature: An Analysis Of J.K. Rowling And Robin Mckinley, Amberly Draper, Dr. Joyce Nelson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Gender portrayal is a topic at the forefront of literacy studies; current research seems to indicate that both boys and girls have been negatively affected by exposure to inequitable portrayals of gender in adolescent literature. My research has focused on two popular fantasy fiction writers in an attempt to show examples of young adult literature depicting positive and enabling gender roles and characteristics, portrayals which I think are capable of helping girls and boys. This report will relate some of the history of gender based literary analysis, give an overview of the works of Rowling and McKinley, and then give …

What I Meant To Say… My Experiment In Writing A First Novel, Olivia Debbie Birdsall, Dr. Louise Plummer Jan 2014

What I Meant To Say… My Experiment In Writing A First Novel, Olivia Debbie Birdsall, Dr. Louise Plummer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I find it difficult to begin this report with a generalization about my topic of study, as most ORCA recipients do, because there is no generalization that seems appropriate for the subject of writing, or what my experience with it over the last year has been. Writing a novel, especially your first, is bound to be as unique an experience for each writer as the novels they produce. One great quandary simply doesn’t exist, nor does one great solution, nor one infallible technique or manner of writing. I did not set out to solve a problem that affects all of …

Learning Through Service: Research On Employment And Education With The Lds Institute In Paris, Brendon K. Barton, Dr. Michael Bush Jan 2014

Learning Through Service: Research On Employment And Education With The Lds Institute In Paris, Brendon K. Barton, Dr. Michael Bush

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Recent interactions between BYU faculty and leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Paris, including the stake presidencies and the Institute, have uncovered several areas of concern for French members of the Church. Among these concerns is that of employment and education for young adult members. In line with President Bateman’s vision of Brigham Young University, in its mission “to take the full spectrum of light across the world,” I researched these concerns through administering surveys, personal research, and interviewing members in Paris (1). With the help of Rachel Newton, I was able to …

Sophie: A Digital Library Of Early German Women’S Writing, Megan S. Morris, Dr. Robert Mcfarland Jan 2014

Sophie: A Digital Library Of Early German Women’S Writing, Megan S. Morris, Dr. Robert Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of my research was to help with the development of the Sophie Project. It was conceived by members of the Germanic and Slavic Languages Department who had been confronted by the difficulties of the lack of usable German-language texts written by early women authors. Finding the texts of eighteenth and nineteenth century writing by Germanlanguage women authors seemed to be difficult enough, but finding texts in modern print that could be used in the classroom was even more difficult. The Sophie Project aims to ease this difficulty. As self described by its home page, it is a “digital …

Louise Gottsched: Digital Library Research From 1771 German- Language Women’S Texts., Samuel C. Lindsey, Michelle Scott, Dr. Robert Mcfarland

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Scholars have failed to systematically observe and record old German facsimiles of German women’s literature for a variety of reasons. First, many of the records have remained unpublished. Second, it is expensive to get hold of these texts due to their rare and fragile condition. Third, it is difficult to read the Old German type and handwriting. Johann Christoph Gottsched was one of the most important dramatic theorists of Enlightenment-era Germany. One of his greatest students and influences was his very gifted and intelligent wife, Louise Adelgunde Victorie Kulmus. While some of her dramatic and theoretical works have been published, …

Bridging The Gap, Rachelle M. Hulme, Lawrence Vincent Jan 2014

Bridging The Gap, Rachelle M. Hulme, Lawrence Vincent

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Many students of music struggle once they have reached the critical point in their training where they are expected to make their way in the professional world. They find a substantial gap between their opportunities as university students and the seemingly unattainable status of professional musicians. I proposed to study the tools to help students to bridge that gap by attending a six-week opera program called AIMS in Graz, Austria.

The Development Of Musical Thought, Melissa J. Clayton, Jerry L. Jaccard Jan 2014

The Development Of Musical Thought, Melissa J. Clayton, Jerry L. Jaccard

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The question that drives this research is: What is the process of musical thought development in children? In sorting through possible answers to this question I have studied the work of Piaget (1, 5 and 6) and Moog (4). Moog’s studies of the musical experience of pre-school age children has led him to conclude that the developmental changes in the structure of musical thought appear to coincide with changes from one developmental stage, as in the developmental stages set forth by Piaget, to the next and that the underlying principle of these changes have to do with memory (4).

Terry Nails The Sale: Senior Narrative Film Project, Dustin Condren, Stan Ferguson Jan 2014

Terry Nails The Sale: Senior Narrative Film Project, Dustin Condren, Stan Ferguson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

After filming my third-year narrative film project, I felt ready for a significant change. Everything that I had done up until that point had consisted of stories of college-age men struggling to come to terms with their own weaknesses and desires. Essentially they were all “inner-struggle” pieces. The project that I had just completed was good, but I wanted something else. Something real, something that told a story, and would allow me as a director to explore dramatic structures.

Cross-Cultural Acceptance In Post-September 11th America: A Recital Of Middle-Eastern Music, Sarah Mcdonald, Dr. James Toronto Jan 2014

Cross-Cultural Acceptance In Post-September 11th America: A Recital Of Middle-Eastern Music, Sarah Mcdonald, Dr. James Toronto

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The attacks of September 11th were designed to strike fear into the hearts of Americans, but the terrorists did not take into account the fact that the blanket term “Americans” includes many of Middle Eastern descent. The aftermath of the hijackings found Muslims, Sikhs, and others of Eastern appearance targeted by unjustly vindictive acts. As a student with many Muslim friends, I wanted to do something to promote cultural acceptance on campus and beyond. My double major in Near Eastern Studies and Vocal Pedagogy prompted the idea of researching authentic classical Middle Eastern music and performing it in recital as …

Creating A Program To Assist Missionaries Understand The Japanese Written World, Daniel Hick, Dr. Masakazu Watanabe Jan 2014

Creating A Program To Assist Missionaries Understand The Japanese Written World, Daniel Hick, Dr. Masakazu Watanabe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The plight of the non-native missionary in Japan is adverse due to the extreme communication barriers that are encountered in every day life. Japanese is vastly different from Western languages. In the MTC missionaries receive sufficient training in the spoken language but are taught little or nothing about the written language. Therefore, upon entering the field of service, non-native missionaries are confounded by the written world that surrounds them.

Eccentric, Darrell Tousley, Brian Christensen Jan 2014

Eccentric, Darrell Tousley, Brian Christensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The definition of eccentric is to deviate from an established pattern or form, accepted usage or conduct. I feel that this one word describes best what I do. The decision do this piece was based on the simple idea that lifting more weight can make you stronger. I believe this to be true with talents as well as with muscles. Though I do not see it as my strongest piece, I feel it was the work most critical in the series I have pursued. Beginning with a formal idea that started with the artistic element of movement, I learned how …

Environments For One – Three Years Old Consideration For Children With Autism, Allison Sschreiber, Dr. Peggy Honey Jan 2014

Environments For One – Three Years Old Consideration For Children With Autism, Allison Sschreiber, Dr. Peggy Honey

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Kids on the Move, is an organization that helps children with mental handicaps become integrated into society. With this cause, comes a special need to create the right environment for these children. Great care must be taken with every material and component, as to not distract, irritate, or create a lethargic feeling in the environment.

Psychoanalysis And The Art Of G.F. Watts, Stephanie E. Mcnairy, Dr. Martha Peacock Jan 2014

Psychoanalysis And The Art Of G.F. Watts, Stephanie E. Mcnairy, Dr. Martha Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

“He came to stay three days: he stayed thirty years,” wrote Sara Pattle Prinsep of her houseguest George Frederic Watts. In 1850, Mr. and Mrs. Prinsep signed a twenty-one year lease for the estate at Little Holland House in London. Shortly after moving in, Mrs. Prinsep asked Victorian artist G.F. Watts to stay with her family so that she could tend to his poor health. Mrs. Prinsep played an important role in Watts’ life. It was upon his introduction to Sara Pattle Prinsep and her single sister Virginia that Watts began his dependence on women to care for him and …

Tongan Children And Their Play Things, Ashley Knudsen, W. Wayne Kimball Jr. Jan 2014

Tongan Children And Their Play Things, Ashley Knudsen, W. Wayne Kimball Jr.

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I had a hard time getting started on this project when I first arrived on the Tongan islands. My body was trying to acclimate to the immense humidity it was being drenched in. Our whole group vegged around the fan as if all energy had been zapped from us. But after adjustments to both jet lag and climate had occurred I was ready to begin.

Art Health Therapy, Jordan Inouye, Dr. Mark Magleby Jan 2014

Art Health Therapy, Jordan Inouye, Dr. Mark Magleby

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Think about the process of painting a picture. Is it possible to use only an intuitive approach to achieve a work’s composition, proportion, and color scheme? No, an art work always requires a minimal amount of rational thought. Now think of practicing medicine. Can a doctor cure a person through purely analytical techniques, focusing only on physical symptoms? Of course not. Factors such as emotional being, social awareness, and psychological state are of great significance in examining patients. Whether it be in clinical settings, private practices, or community hospitals, art health therapy helps break down the emotional and psychological barriers …

Elizabeth Baumann Jerichau And Hans Christian Andersen’S “The Little Mermaid”, Elizabeth Cramer, Dr. Mark Magleby Jan 2014

Elizabeth Baumann Jerichau And Hans Christian Andersen’S “The Little Mermaid”, Elizabeth Cramer, Dr. Mark Magleby

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Denmark was not immune to the Orientalist trend which swept Europe in the nineteenth-century. The famous fairy tale writer, Hans Christian Andersen and his artist friend, Elizabeth Baumann Jerichau, both lived in Copenhagen, and were heavily involved in the current interest in the art, people, and culture of the “exotic East.” The purpose of my research was to investigate the Orientalist overtones of The Little Mermaid, both in the fairy tale written by Andersen in 1837 and the interpretive painting by Jerichau in 1862.
