Because I Am, Ann M. Sasala

SURGE

Why?

“Because I am a Republican!”

Why?

“Because I am a Democrat!”

Why?

“Because I am a Christian!”

Why?

In America, religion and politics are not merely taboo dinner topics; it is strongly advised that you don’t discuss either one in nearly all situations. [excerpt]

American Memorials: Forging A National Identity A Study Of Selected Monuments In The U.S., Lindsay Larson, Dr. Susan Rugh

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Yale historian Robin Winks writes, “We all know history is, simultaneously, three things: what actually happened, what historians choose to record, and what the people—and people, some people, these people, those people—believe to be true about the past.”1 The study of “what people believe to be true about the past” is an emerging concern in the field of history. Although many historians question the legitimacy of studying public memory, it has become increasingly popular because historians, sociologists, and psychologists alike recognize that it largely defines the identity of individuals. In one of the most influential works on public memory, …

The Price Of Polygamy: Economic Impact Of Federal Prosecution Upon Families Of Incarcerated Polygamists, Timothy Merrill, Dr. Brian Cannon

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In recent decades many scholars have put polygamy under the spyglass of inquiry—filling volumes with their findings—yet surprisingly little has been written on the Mormon Underground and the prison life of polygamists in the 1880s and 1890s. The extant literature devoted to this important era of Mormon history is piecemeal at best, focusing upon specific locations, particular time periods, or individual persons. In addition, the broader economic implications have not been addressed adequately. With nearly 1000 Mormon polygamists serving prison sentences, how were their families impacted financially?

Oral Histories Of World War Ii Glider Pilots, Matthew Carter Bates, Dr. Frank W. Clawson Jan 2014

Oral Histories Of World War Ii Glider Pilots, Matthew Carter Bates, Dr. Frank W. Clawson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In an age of supersonic jets and satellite-guided bombs, it is hard to imagine that the United States would ever send American troops behind enemy lines in little more than a plywood box covered with canvas, but during World War II that is exactly what happened. In fact, a team of six to ten men assembled America’s first stealth fighter in about eight hours using only a kit of five oak crates and no power tools (Brennan 1991,16-17). It was called the WACO CG-4A, a glider aircraft that carried the heralded 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions into World War II’s …

Orca Scholarship Report, Joe Jackson, Linda Sullivan Jan 2014

Orca Scholarship Report, Joe Jackson, Linda Sullivan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Studying the visual and written literacy of high school kids has proved interesting and has lead to a couple of interesting conclusions, as well as sparked my interest into further study and research in the field of semiotics. What I discovered is the inseparable link between word literacy and visual symbol interpretation. Inseparably connected because of the semiotic nature of symbols and their connection to written origins. I also learned that there is a significant gap in the knowledge of certain information received over the television, internet, and movies between the east coast and western United States.

The Journals Of Reba Booth, First Lds Sister Missionary To The Middle East, Laura R. Ostler, Dr. James A. Toronto

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Even before September 11, 2001 exploded the region onto global consciousness, the Middle East had a special fascination for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Church doctrine ties modern Saints with ancient Israel. The “gathering of Israel” is a topic commonly discussed in formal and informal LDS gatherings. In fact, this interest has existed since the Church began; a Latter-day Saint dedicated the Holy Land only a few years after the Church was officially organized.

Film Music Aesthetic Foundations, James Guymon, Dr. Dennis Packard Jan 2014

Film Music Aesthetic Foundations, James Guymon, Dr. Dennis Packard

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Since its earliest beginnings film has been the subject of intense philosophic study. It has naturally followed that the industry has become a playground/battlefield for the creatively thoughtful, where a person’s rationale is often more important than her finished product. It is this environment that has nurtured a subculture wherein every successful director is a philosopher of sorts.
